Lovely stuff!Cant believe I scrolled down through every single one of the hundreds....Some old ones ,many Id never seen before, some very moving -like the roadside with all the soldiers bodies in the ditch.....-surprised to see Soviet troops with body armour (or at least thats what it looked like!)(about 80% down the page)

It appears that they are firing a pak38 anti-tank gun. They probibily just took out a tank, thats my best guess

Lucas unashamedly took, stole or borrowed lots of real world items and transformed them for the Star Wars universe.

The Stormtrooper Rifle in SW is based on the Sten gun. The Tripod mounted heavy laser is based on a UBS. The Stormtrooper heavy laser is based on the Lewis gun. Han solo's blaster is based on a broom handle Mauser.

When the effects guys at ILM were struggling with the Death Star battle George Lucas grabbed a whole lot of WW2 fghter and bomber gun camera footage. He then went and edited up a reference as to how the fighters and guns in Star Wars should move. Some of the scenes in the final Death Star battle are actually exact recreations of WW2 gun came footage, with Spitfires and 109s replaced with X-Wings and TIE fighters.

Thanks! Many photos new to me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Some of those photos I found in THIS (http://www.screenshotart.com/index.php?showtopic=9621&view=findpost&p=59776) thread a while ago on a MP forum. All in quite rare hi-res size (some small ones in the 4th side posted by another person). Check all the 5 pages.

My guess would be a tunnel gun as used in some models of B-24 Liberators instead of the Sperry ball turret.

Clues are the size and shape of the hatch (note that the gun mount can be swung away to the right), the fact it's a .50 M2 machine gun and the small side view windows in the fuselage. The size and general shape of the fuselage is a good fit for the B-24 as well. There also appear to be two waist guns behind him, too.

The TIE fighters are actually the tail gun turret of a lancaster/liberator bomber. imagine cutting the tail - you end up with a glass bubble with guns and some H-shaped "wings".Then you make it fly the other way and- bingo.
