I've spent some time searching for an answer to this--with little luck, so I thought I'd start a topic.

Since purchasing the Complete Edition, I've been sucked once more into Singleplayer Campaigns in IL-2--I've yet to try multiplayer! (Having some trouble with it).

So, I was wondering--I'm beginning to develope an emotionally attachment to my AI comrades, seeing how they've saved my butt more than a few times, and I was wondering--is it possible to "trick" IL-2 into loading a custom paint scheme for your wingmates?

I was able to edit a CACHE file to get the insignia I wanted on the nose of the aircraft--would it be something similar? The IL-2 community has produced a lot of very, very nice skins for some of my favorite aircraft, and it'd be great if I could watch the AI fly about in them in Campaigns?

Is this possible? Or just a pipe dream? I'd be willing to download another application--currently, I rely on IL-2 Stab.

The only way I have found is by using Lowengrin's DCG. There are those who prefer the stock DGEN, but I beg to differ. If you use DCG, you can assign whatever skin you choose to whatever squadron you choose in the campaign. You can also edit plane type and pilot skill and # of planes in a squadron all very easily in one screen. You can also build your own campaign realatively easily, once you know how the program works. It might be a little tricky to set up, but there are those here who could help you out easily. If you wish to try it, here is the link:

DCG v2.8 (http://www.lowengrin.com/download.php?view.103)

This is the only way I know of. It does totaly replace the stock campaings, but it has so much more to offer. You can change squadron density, weather probabilities, front locations, squadron skill/skin/#of planes, ground object densities ... Plus, there is alot more that goes on in each mission, such as land battles or other air battles that give something to watch on long flights.

Any questions let me know.

Ah, I've toyed around with DCG before...unfortunately, I ended up with a headache before I managed to accomplish anything. It's a lot easier just to let the game handle it...plus, I think you'd only get to change the squadron skin once that way, in the beginning.

So, I assume it's normally hard coded? Damn.

I'm sure I've read of a way to add custom skins to DGen campaigns. I think Kuna wrote something aboiut it.try searching under his name. Or else download and play the User made campaigns - there is just about anything you could possibly want to play and they invariably come with skins.
Check out the MissionBuilders Forum, first or second sticky for a list of campaigns and links.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Edit the .db file for the map your campaign is running in the DGEN folder. you can find which .db file to edit by opening the conf file in your
Missions/Campaign/DE/DGen_S_Barbarossanoob0 folder
(the last part ie DE is for the nation which the campaign is running under, so if its a Japanesse army campain, it will b JA ect. ect)

open .db file in note pad and add the skin name u want adding .bmp to the end of the skin name.

original
[Planes]
12 I_153_M62
15 I_153P
2 I_16TYPE18
24 I_16TYPE24

add skin file names so it looks like this

[Planes]
12 I_153_M62 vpmedia_i153_VVS_nm.bmp
15 I_153P vpmedia_i153_VVS_nm.bmp
2 I_16TYPE18
24 I_16TYPE24

if u want winter skins add a space and add the winter skin after the first like this

[Planes]
12 I_153_M62 vpmedia_i153_VVS_nm.bmp vpmedia_i153winternm.bmp
15 I_153P vpmedia_i153_VVS_nm.bmp
2 I_16TYPE18
24 I_16TYPE24

I have never done it but I understand that if u want a different skin for 1 squadron, u some how add it to the part of the .db file which has the squads listed.

It's similar to what money_money posted. Here's an excerpt from a never-published modification of the NWE-Map's Dgen campaigns.

there is an addon windows GUI based editor that lets you load your mission files and play with them without editing the text files but i cant recall the name of it just now.

One program that is great for better looking offline play is IL2 MAT which replaces the stock overly bright markings and numbers with historically accurate (including hakencruz) authentically weathered markings.

I'm quoting what someone else posted earlier, this worked for me!!

This is very similar to what's been posted above, but might be of some help if oyou are unclear as to what to do:

This is the quote:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">

"Changing campaign skins

You can edit the DGEN config files to give specific skins to each squadron with the default campaign generator.

In the DGEN folder, there are a load of files. The [mapname].DB files set what squadrons and aircraft were flying in this campaign (and a lot of other stuff too). You can edit this to give custom skins.

For instance, the Barbarossa.DB file is default like this:

(loads of stuff)
[Planes]
62 I_153_M62
33 I_153P
34 I_16TYPE18
37 I_16TYPE24
6 SU_2
5 IL_2_1940Early
(then loads more planes and stuff)

This is telling DGEN that at the start of the campaign there are 62 I-153M62s in the theatre, 6 Su-2s etc.

I found nice no-markings skins for all these planes and renamed them as 'dc1.bmp' (for Dynamic Campaign Skin number 1) and 'dw1.bmp' (for Dynamic Campaign Winter Skin number 1), but I just did that for my convenience - there's no real need to rename the skins if you remember what the name of the skin is for each aircraft! I changed the file like this:

[Planes]
62 I_153_M62 dc1.bmp dw1.bmp
33 I_153P dc2.bmp dw1.bmp
34 I_16TYPE18 dc1.bmp dw1.bmp
37 I_16TYPE24 dc2.bmp
6 SU_2 $dc1.bmp $dw1.bmp
5 IL_2_1940Early dc1.bmp

The syntax for this is:
[number of planes at start] [summer skin filename] [winter skin filename]

A skin filename beginning with $ means that it has markings already printed onto the skin, and turns off the game's markings. I couldn't find a nice no-markings Su-2 skin at that time.

There's a lot more comprehensive info at the SimHQ.com Il-2 forum, by the way."

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Also:

This applies to single missions I think, if you want to change the planes in a certain mission but keep the default version too. Note: change the skins as described above:

"Go to Missions folder, then Single.
Open the mission folder for the mission you want to change.
Open ex. ???40721.mis??? in wordpad.
Change the skins.
Save the original file somewhere other than the FB missions folder, the name of the mission will be the same, and might cause conflict."

I used the last method to change the skins in one particular mission out of a campaign (can't remeber exactly how, it would be in the 'campaign' folder though), and saved it as a single mission with new skins.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I copied this from an earlier post too. Actually I think this is the method I followed:

Quote:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">

"Aircraft skins in campaigns

There is way easier thing you can do.. just open DGen folder and select appropriate map file and add skin by typing exact skin name (that you already have in appropriate skin folder) next to desired plane.

For instance here's Kursk.db

If you have a skin for LA-5 named la5skin.bmp you should enter that next to the LA-5 entry in Kursk.DB. Take a look at the red text.

Take a look on how they have done it with AI planes at bottom of the file, that should give you a clue.

For sure you can go mad if you change skin after every mission you played in .mis files, that is not reccomended.

After you made that correction, on that map default skinned LA-5 will always appear in la5skin.bmp. About default skins, they are encoded somewhere.(you can not preview other than in game)

Let me know if you have succeded, because I have done that year ago or so (I think I write all correctly, I may be wrong tho) and it worked nicely. "

OK checked on my games PC and what you need is Quick Mission Tuner. QMT lets you change the skin of evey aircraft in the mission.

A word of warning some of the stuff QMT changes appears to be intended for co-ops and dogfights and will stuff an offline mission file but skin changes seem to be fine.

Download from here:

http://home.comcast.net/~qmtsupport/qmt.htm (http://home.comcast.net/%7Eqmtsupport/qmt.htm)

This is the blurb on it from the page above:

********************************

Welcome to the QMT download site for version 1.9.6.

Quick Mission Tuner is a utility to allow you to edit missions outside of IL2 Forgotten Battles. With QMT you can manage mission files by renaming, copying, moving or deleting mission files. Edit or add some mission elements, like mission time, weather, map and cloud height to mission briefings. With the briefing editor you can easily insert cooperative mission tags.

QMT aids you in editing mission conditions (mission time, clouds and weather). Aircraft flights can be modified by changing fuel and weapon loads, the skill level of the flight and the number of aircraft in the flight. The flight's aircraft type and country can also be changed. The flight's AI control delay start can set. Speed and altitudes can be edited in each flight's waypoints.

Within a flight, individual aircraft attributes can be modified such as skill, plane skin, pilot skin and country markings.

you can do it just as major setback quoted. I think thats actually the reply to me sometime ago http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

The bonus is, it doesnt matter what side or plane you fly for, in that db file, that type of plane will alwasys be 'dressed' in that skin.

The only thing to note, i have found that you cannot have spaces in the skin names, ie 'good skin.bmp', has to be all one thing.

heres a nice one of me flying IIIjg54 in the crimea, thanks to cannon, and then stalingrad later on

Exams on first aid (practical and theory), general knowledge, oral presentation, uniform. I came first and am representing the state of Western Australia, going to Borneo and specifically Sandakan POW Camp. Afterwards, I'll b asked to make speechs etc at various places, no doubt getting my face on TV a bit http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Don't forget to take notes for your CV. If I were you I'd talk to the people in charge to confirm exactly how you should write it up to maximise its value for university or job applications in the future.

If you meet interesting important people, don't forget to take their business cards. This sort of thing tends to offer awesome networking opportunities which may be of great value in the future.

Last but not least, don't forget to send thankyou letters to the organisers. These days very few people bother, and taking the time to do so will probably serve to differentiate you from the masses. Don't underestimate the organisers of such events. Often you'll find that they are VIPs you didn't know about. I recall with chagrin discussing a certain manoeuvre that I had seen performed on TV by a certain armed forces display team with the organiser of a certain event only for him to say "Oh well, I came up with that for an airshow in 19xx and it happened to catch on...".

Ouch! And it happened more than once with the same guy!

The thing about aviation is that the real heroes often don't have a public profile, and as a result you can find yourself talking to a legend without actually having the slightest idea about it until afterwards (been there more than once...).

Finally, whilst it's fun to go to new places etc., the real value of any experience of this nature is the people you meet and the things you can learn from them. The place itself doesn't matter too much; some places are hotter - some are colder. Some are wetter, some are drier.

But when you get past that tourist stuff, what really matters is the people, and the relics. I use the term "relic" carefully. There is something special about for example a Merlin 66 or an Olympus 22R. Of course everybody likes the 593 mk.610, but for my money as a true believer it's all about the 22R!

Soak it all up, and have fun. There's always a risk when someone like me starts lecturing you about how to get the most out of things that you'll miss out on the fun, either because you're working 24/7 or because you feel guilty about not working 24/7. Don't. If it isn't fun then what's the point?

Just remember that this kind of thing is worth more than the free plane ride. In 10 years it may well be a golden ticket into your chosen career path (though having said that, golden tickets often lose out to conventional qualifications in the modern politically correct world).

As such, don't neglect the future; keep an eye on how you'll write it up in your CV, and try to network as much as possible. It rarely hurts to be on first name terms with a few VIPs. If you ask nicely they might write references for you...

So, congrats, and enjoy! If you play your cards right you might still be enjoying the experience in a decade or more.

Well, I'm stumped.

I was able to locate tbe *.db file for my two pilot careers no problem....unfortunately, adding "dcs.bmp" "dcw.bmp", after renaming the skins in the plane folders to the same thing doesn't work.

Not sure why...I can load up the skins for my plane individually, but it doesn't change the default skin.

I suspect it might have to do with the fact that I've editted what aircraft are flyable--you can only set the defaults for the aircraft flyable on the unmodified lists. For example, I'm flying an FW-190A4 in Smolensk (Barabossa), which isn't available without modification. Thus:

26 FW_190A4 dcs.bmp dcw.bmp

Does not work, since I had to insert the line.

Oh well, serves me right, I guess. A shame there's no way to get around it.

You were right, csThor. Old game skins still show up in the armarment selection menu (not sure why), but ingame the ones I've editted *.db files to include load.

Thanks everyone! Let me know if someone figures out why the selection menu uses the old skins....

Also, speaking of IL-2 Mat Manager--I've tried to use this several times in the past...the interface, if you'll forgive me for saying, is very, very intimidating and clustered (was it really necessary to include advertisements for products in it?), but I am interested in getting "weathered" insignia and squadron numbers (I'm no to worried about the Hakenkreuz myself, since I use Sturmovik Stab anyway). I'm still poking around with it, trying to get it to work.

EDIT: Actually, now I know why I never had any luck with IL-2 Mat Manager...for some reason, every single version I've ever downloading is missing almost all of the actual MAT files (just a handful for France and Italy), so I get the typical error messages and it doesn't really work. Not sure why this happens, I though there might be a seperate MAT pack to download, but I've never seen it myself.

WTF?

First prize is being sent to a POW camp in Borneo?

What happens to the runners-up? Are they shot?

You can have no idea just how hostile aircraft can be until they come to your area...
Aircraft which strafe or bomb your positions should be regarded with suspicion, if not deep mistrust. Aircraft which bomb and strafe your position and wear a red circle should certainly be regarded with deep mistrust. In fact, the deeper the better. A six-foot-deep slit trench is an ideal place from which to mistrust them...

You are going to a place with some of the most spectacular wildlife on Earth. Bring a camera and make sure you don't just see the inside of the camp and some town (towns can be found all over the Planet).<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
