You'd need a tough childhood to choose to do this as a sport.

My son is in Prague right now getting ready for a Tournament there this weekend..
He was in Amsterdam last weekend at the Zoetermeer rink - they finished with only one win - My boy had the game winner with less than 2 minutes remaining.
They played a German semi-pro team on wed. and beat them in an exhibition game.
Youth hockey is a great way to teach kids about the gretest game on earth and various life lessons but like anything else, you have to have good coaches and support. Same is true for any youth sport...I've seen some ruckuses at little league and pop warner games, so don't isolate hockey as a purely bad example please.
Nice pics Bill - hockey is the best.

where do you find that stuff, Billy?!lol
Yes my son is twenty and just started playing again after years of great youth hockey.
His team is called the Hecklers and they wear Ranger colors (like his PoPs used to back in the day) very cool.
The boy works for one of the hockey equipment wholesale outfits as a rep. and before that he was a USA Hockey official (refereeing youth games) so I guess the game has done ok by him.

Hockey... Pheh...
As sport you can love unless one of your kids plays it. Then you're too busy shelling out dough to love it. This was my son's second year of organized hockey, his first year as a "Bantam" 13 - 14 years old. He didn't score many goals this year but won the "Charlie Morrison" Award for "Best Offensive Player".
He won it because of leadership, desire, heart, the ability to follow directions and an unflinching devotion to "team spirit". He never ripped a teammate, win or lose and always tried to pick his squaddies up. I was never prouder of him for this cause he had some kids on his team who were developmentally challenged in some ways but he always tried to encourage them.
As for Hockey, it can bring out the worst in some folks, but God can it bring out the best in others.

I think that goes for just about any sport. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
I'd like to stress the significance of emphasizing sports in your kid's life. Introduce him/her to sports, whether it be football, soccer, baseball, hockey, running etc etc. Believe me, your child will learn skills and principles that are EXTREMELY relevant into their adult lives, and they will thank you for the physical fitness, confidence, leadership/followship abilities and overall self esteem.

Somehow, it sounds better in French!!
Best hockey brawl I ever saw, and I saw quite a few as a Flyers season ticket holder in the '70's and 80's, was the old Philadelphia Firebirds and the Johnstown Jets. Before it was over, even the coaches and trainers were fighting each other. It took about 20 Philadelphia Policemen to break it up.

Heh sorry for the 'inside joke', but its real. Foppa is ****** off cos they lost the Swedish championship final. I'll translate but its not only what he says but how he says it thats funny cos he speaks with a dialect.
(A bit into the clip)
Foppa: "I have to say im deeply dissapointed at Böje (the referee), he ****** sucks."
Reporter: "You're dissapointed at the referee?"
Foppa: "Yeah he sucks so ****** bad i want to kick his ***, its true"
Reporter: "World Championships, its clear that Mats Sundin will play..."
Foppa: "Hey you, i dont give a **** about that now, im going home for a shower"
