Does anyone know where I can buy the UK version (as that's where I live) of SH3 online? I've only seen it on direct 2 drive, but that's for americans only.

I should point out that i mean electronic download.

Hi ghostwhistler

Welcome to the Silent Hunter forums http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You can buy a download version of SH3 from Virgin Media's website, but you have to pay a subscription rather than just pay individually for the games you want:

http://playvideogames.virginmedia.com/MetaGame/productd....jsp?product_id=3974 (http://playvideogames.virginmedia.com/MetaGame/productdetail.jsp?product_id=3974)

However, they seem to be offering free trial of their service. They also say you can cancel the subscription at any time:

I hope that helps.

Intriguing! I've not heard of this before. Thanks.

Are there any functional limits to the game (i assume once you've downloaded it youget to keep it). I haven't read their terms yet.

No idea- I just found it on Google. I've never purchased any game as a download before.

Is there a particular reason why you prefer a download version to a disc version? You can get a disc version from Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silent-Hunter-III-PC-DVD/dp/B000FUCGDY/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1198950212&sr=8-2) for less than 10!

i don't have a dvd rom.

that virgin thing is a bit of a joke. You can download the game, but you can't play it if your subscription is over. ultiamtely you'd be paying more to play it than it would cost retail i would think.

Hmmm... You're right about the Virgin Media service - it's more like renting the game rather than buying it.

No DVD drive? What PC do you have? I'm only asking because it's unusual for any PC from the last 2 years or so to not have a DVD drive as standard. Out of interest, what is the spec of your PC? (CPU, graphics card, RAM)

Do you have space for another drive in your PC case? If so, you could get a cheap (but decent) DVD drive for around 11, and they're quite easy to install. External DVD drives are a lot more expensive (50), but you can easily make your own by buying a USB 2.0 drive enclosure (10, including cables), connect the previously-mentioned 11 DVD drive in the enclosure, then plug it into your USB port.

Other than that, it would seem your only other option is to get the US version from Direct 2 Drive.

It's a refurbished pc, i didn't think i'd need a dvd rom so i didn't ask for one. it's only a p4 1.4 with 512mb ram. nothing special.

You may well have space to install a DVD drive in the case (as well as your existing CD drive)

I should tell you that Ubisoft were rather optimistic with their minimum specs for SH3. You will probably struggle to run the game smoothly with just 512MB of RAM - you really need 1GB min, preferably 2GB. Also your processor is on the low side, and if you don't have a reasonably powerful graphics card, SH3 is going to be slow, as it's a very hardware-intensive game.

Have you thought about investing in a new PC? If you know someone who is good at building PC's, you could probably put together a great gaming machine for a 500 budget, or less at a push. Much cheaper (and better quality) than buying a ready-built machine from Dell or the like.
