I was on my way to the patrol-grid in the middle of 1942, when my VIIC encountered a large convoy... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The convoy had 2 Hunt1 escorts, and I decided to take them out, so the convoy would be sitting ducks...

I took out the leading destroyer with a guided torpedo, and now it was time to take out the second...

I fired a second guided torpedo, and here is the result...
http://img185.echo.cx/img185/5663/destroyerkill3dy.jpg

It was now time to position myself, so i could fire the rest of my 7 torpedoes at the large ships...
http://img185.echo.cx/img185/2626/preparetokill3vz.jpg

When all my torpedoes were fired, I surfaced and started using my deckgun... When I had 3 rounds left, the last ship in the convoy sunk... Left was one (neutral) survivor...

I was quite happy with that patrol... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Nice job. What realism percentage did you play at?

My best patrol was when I came accross a carrier convoy that had 5 escorts and one carrier. I sunk all of them. I have never managed to sink all of a big convoy like that. Good Job!

I can imagine the grin on your face as the 2nd Hunt went down... must have been like sitting down to Thanksgiving Dinner... time for the feast to begin! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I never hits the 100, my best mission was 89.000, if there was a cruize-ship of 20.000 than i might hit the 100, but the cruize-ship was neutral http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif and i dont want to have negative reown on my list, so i let the cruize-ship alone

Bit disappointing - very unrealistic for me.

Well I've just tried my first mission using manual targeting and solutions, and I can't hit anything let alone sink a whole armada.

Welcome to the club. I manage to take 2-4 ships out when attacking a convoy. at 74% (I want those cameras!)

I'd like to know how you get a decent range measurement when the scope is going up, down and all over the place :-)

Also how do you work out the AoB and bearing - is that bearing to target or current sub bearing??

Manual targetting ain't easy!

Manual targetting becomes a lot easier with practice so persevere and you'll get a real sense of satisfaction quite soon. After a while you'll wonder what all the fuss was about !

In rough seas it is better to keep your sub at one third speed as it seems to provide more stability in order to get the range. You have to stop though to get the speed as the calculation tends to be incorrect when the sub isn't stopped. Also beware that in severely rough sea your conning tower may well be breaking the surface. In rough seas infact it tends to be better to wait for darkness and then attack on the surface unless its pea soup in which case I don't attack at all. There are no old, bold submariners etc

For AOB, just imagine the target is the icon in the middle and then move the outer icon to represent the position of your sub relative to the target.

A handy tip is to remember to do as much data gathering as soon as possible - ie Identify targets and speed as soon as you can. Also set up your torps early too - I generally set up three torps on fast impact setting in rough weather or magnetic and medium in good weather.

And crucially, open the torpedo doors before you fire otherwise you lose a couple of seconds during the firing routine.

So for AoB with 'gods eye' view on just draw a line from the target to my sub and the angle of that line relative to the targets heading is the AoB?

If I'm moving so that my position changes relative to the target then AoB is always changing. Is that correct

And do this and everything else while moving? haheheeheeehooo.

In short: Yes!

Hmmm... if you meaure AoB then input this into the TDC does it then track AoB even if you change course, if not then manual targeting will result in rapid hair loss.

[EDIT] What's bearing by the way - bearing to target or my current heading?
