Today at my local airport at Concord, CA (Buchanan Field KCCR) there was a fatal crash. A Piper Malibu flying from San Diego was on its second approach, due to unfavorable weather and limited visibility, to either parrallel runways 14L,R or 19L,R. The aircraft fell short of the threshhold and crashed on the Hwy 4 median, cartwheeled, then caught fire. Fortunatley, no vehicles on the highway were struck, though a freight truck did reportedly run over some of the debris from the crash.

Three of the persons on board, including the pilot, were deceased at the scene. The fourth, a twelve-year-old boy, later died from his injuries at a nearby hospital in Walnut Creek.

My prayers for the victims and their families.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Man! That is the second bad one for concord in a very short time. And on Highway 4 no less!!! That will just give more ammo to close Condord.

I'm always saddened when the kids are hurt. Someone plowed into the dirt here in visalia with his two granddaughters on board this year. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

NTSB maybe?

Sad. And scary at the same time. i'm starting flight school sometime in '07 for my private license. Stories like this give me 2nd thoughts.
I always hate it when it happens to kids though. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I'm sure you've heard it a million times, but planes are safer than cars.If you have an oppurtunity to take lessons-do it.

My dad did,I went to ground school with him,but I(pops wouldn't spot me that amount of $$$) could never afford the actual flying instruction.
I regret it to this day. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

@ Copperhead:
NTSB will surely do***ent (<-- D O C U M E N T) this case, as they should, and always do. Flying Magazine posts excerpts of NTSB accident summaries every month.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

If news like this seriously makes you question your decision to learn to fly I think you have better uses for your money then flight training. Getting scared is not the correct response. Cautious perhaps, wanting to know what caused this and learn from it .... ok. But sometimes you are the pigeon and sometimes your the statue. Not all accidents can be prevented. Just stay out of weather, do a good walkaround and don't put the plane over the limits and you should be fine (bar other people flying in to you or hidden defects that cause you to crash to earth in a screaming fireball)<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Planes are safer than cars- but only in the hands of competent and proficient pilots. It's the sunday-dentist-pilots who are having most of the general aviation accidents. Flying is a blast -and I encourage anyone to try it- but it needs to be taken very seriously. I can't believe how little your average pilot knows about their own aircraft, or how to properly handle an emergency situation.

Thank god for you, the aviation jesus? I know a lot of guys who'd fall under that catagory and I respect their flying skills as much as I do those of my military pilot friends.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

"The aviation jesus" no.

But I did have 35 hours in cessna's before I became a professional pilot. I have since flown 10 years with the military. In my first 35 hours in the military I learned 5 times as much as I did on the civilian side from CFI's. I used to tool around in cessna's with less than 20 hours and I am just fortunate nothing went wrong.

If you want to call me out based on the experience of "guys you know", maybe you should do your research first. On second thought don't. You can PM me, but we are getting to far from the intent of this thread.
