Everybody should see it,i downloaded the american one as well.

It would be great if they generated an output file that could be emailed to other people with the device,
Just the thing to defeat key loggers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Yep. This one is great. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The only thing it hasnt got is the programmable D Reflector.

Ok I am the network admin where I work and I thought I was tech-savvy but I cannot figure this one out! How do I switch to the 4 rotor machine?

Celeon999

If you use one of the thin B or C Reflectors you can put 4 wheels in.

If you use the thick ones there is only space for 3 wheels http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Before I go ahead and download this thing and invest my time into it, is there anything practical about this? Can you do something useful with this or is it just a gimmick?

Its a 100% functioning simulator of the original ENIGMA.

And yes it works http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Some friends of mine use it to morse encoded messages http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Cool! So, if my brother had this and I had this, we could send each other messages to decode?

Yes thats because the code changes with every key you press. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Thats what made this cyphering method so unbelievable hard to decode. Especially hard to decode it in time so that the information you gather is not already outdated and useless. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

So if you create your own unique codebooks it is still a very efficient and secure cyphering method. Even today http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You can also cypher your encoded messages over and over again as much as you like.

The Kriegsmarine used to cypher the ultra secret informations 3 or even 4 times with different codes and machine configurations.

Absolutely. It is an extremely ingenious device and now that I know more about how it actually works, multi cyphered messages must have been a complete nightmare to crack.

On a side note, I think we've just found a way around the banned words on the UBI forums http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Ok now that I am getting better than this what do you think about this:
How great would it be if as a mod or an option in SHIV we received msgs coded and had to decode them with an enigma emulator like this in the radio room!!!!! Hey Dev. team!!!

Grey004

You may know of this already but for those who don't.

This method of cyphering was originally devised by the Dutch and its intended use was for Industrial Espionage.

Also, the Poles where working on Enigma decoding as early as 1936.After the fall of Poland in 39,they sent all of their work to France.
When the occupying forces found out about the work, they rounded up all of the boffins involved for interrogation, and eventually came to the conclusion, that, although gains where made in decyphering Enigma, they still had a lot more to do to crack it.

Another little snippet is although a machine and code book was captured by H.M.S Bulldog, another gain in the encyphering of Enigma was due to a Luftwaffe operator, who continually used his girlfriends name, when transmitting. This gave the folks at Bletchley a clue to decoding it.

If I pick up any more bits,I'll post them.

As far as i know this idea came also up during the development of SH3.

But for some reason they cancelled that suggestion.
I believe ive read something about copyright problems and other things.

To implement it as a mod in SH3 sounds easier than it would be. That would take a lot of coding work.

Most of the time, enigma deciphering would be unnoticiable for the kaleun. He has the radio mate, who is supposed to use the machine in order of coding and decoding messages. Is like with our PC's: we wrote a message and give order to send it: actually, the PC codifies the message and then activates a complex mechanism to send it. Doing by ourselves, it would take several hours to send even the simplest message. But look transparent to us, because we are unaware of the whole process.

Yes but you can take the position of the radiomen in SH-3 right ? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Exactly my thought - this should be an option and not the default - though it should definatly count in the realism%. There should however be an occasional message that the kaleun has to decode himself as operating the ENIGMA was as much a required skill as navigating or firing a torp IMO.

Have you looked into the help manual of the simulator ?
There are some historical messages that you can decode for practice :

This one is interesting:

"The following fragment of a message contains an important piece of naval wartime history. It was intercepted by British codebreakers and made decisive action by the Royal Navy possible."

(They mean the last transmission of the Bismarck but it is only a fragment)

Settings for the message

(Couldnt translate it 100 % so ive changed it so that it makes best sense in english)

The commander of the Heer (??? Why Heer?)

KRKR (maybe a short term for an rang ?)

Chief of the flotilla to OKM (High command of the Kriegsmarine)

Torpedo hit in the stern

Ship not longer manouverable

We are fighting to the last grenade

Long lives the F├╝hrer
