i remember watching one of the Dambusters squad members relate how he watched a close formation Lancaster have a wing explode from a Flak hit

in slow motion he watched the huge bomber crumple & burst into flames

he said it seemed to fall out of the sky in slow motion

When the author wrote about being attacked with the 20mm rounds, It reminded me of how my father, uncles, cousins, and family friends who were in WW2, all had one thing in common. That in all the years that I was around them, I never saw them get flapped about anything that people get upset about nowadays. Even all of the women that I knew were, or if they are still alive, are the same. They all made it through that mess alive and everything that comes after is easier to deal with. Not long ago, I was breaking up a concrete driveway when this old woman was working her way up the sidewalk. She stopped to watch what I was doing and said that as a young woman during the occupation, she was forced to do the same sort of work. She then went on to say that if she refused to do the work, they would have killed her. She smiled and bid me a good day, then continued her shuffle down the sidewalk. She never did say who "they" were. All in all, whatever comes good or bad, these people are grateful for what they have and don't complain too much about the little stuff in life.
