I have been playing SH4 and I would really like to go back to SH3, but I loth to install it because of Starforce.

Is there a way to install SH3 without installing Starforce...or is this a taboo subject?

Taboo.

There is a way, but you'll have to look elsewhere than the official forums here.

Well, ....not strictly "taboo".

SH3 is available as a download from Direct2Drive.

Obviously, in the case of a digital download, there is no disk protection scheme in effect.

(It is also available from the UBI store as a download if you live in North America.)

If you are using Vista 32 bit, you can go to this website and get at new starforce who will work with Vista.

And if you are using Vista 64, well, then it's goodbye for SH III and welcome to SH IV.

It's just too bad, that they are no GWX and SHC for SH IV. I do hope, that one day they will come..

The later released box copies didn't have starforce and direct2drive downloads don't.

Having had an expensive, lengthy nightmare with Starforce when I installed SH3 out of the box, I'd like a little confirmation that a downloaded SH4 from Ubisoft will not have Starforce. I tried to access Support, but apparently you have to first tell them where you bought the game that you have not yet bought. I know the moderator here reported that Starforce is not included on downloads, but a forum search suggested to me that a Kong download did in fact have Starforce. Any way I can get an absolutely reliable answer about this?

Ubi stopped using Starforce in 2006. D2D uses another forum of CP protection and it may be the same as the DVD, SecureROM. Also, might I suggest buying a hard copy of the game instead of a download version. D2D versions are install limited and then you have to get new licenses.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not so sure that current Ubisoft games are safe, whether they use the accursed Starforce or something else. The new Settlers box carries a small print "notice" (should be "warning")that installing the game might interfere with optical drives. Why anyone would chance that interference mystifies me. I haven't looked over a SH4 box, so I don't know if carries a similar notice

Most games (at least Ubi games) have a little yellow box stating that copyright protection is in use and may interfere with some programs or something to that effect.

Settlers 6 uses Tages copy protection, and it allows a "no CD" method to be used if it conflicts with your drive or any copying/imaging software you may have.

Thank you both for your replies. I'll look into Tages to decide about Settlers, but I will regretfully stay away from SH until I am convinced that my prior experience won't be repeated; the fact that some other companies have similar notices is not reassuring (Matrixgames and Civ, I think, carry no such warnings). My loss, I know, as SH is a good game.

I'm guessing direct 2 drive isn't an option?

A few weeks ago, I asked about SH4 and how buggy it was and what CP is used as I was a bit gunshy about getting it (Ubi games have gone downhill recently and I do not want a mediocre game). I to was worried about not wanting both buggy software and Starforece, but with Ubi not using SF (I was lucky enough to find out first mind you), that is one worry we do not have. If you can find a boxed version of SH4, the recommendations I have is to get it. I would do the same for you. Still, if you wish to get the D2D version, ask over on the SH4 forums about what CP is used. I am sure they will have an answer for you.

Where can one buy a boxed copy of SHIII without starforce? What I mean is, is there a way to be sure that a boxed copy is a 'later' copy without starforce?

I bought a starforce version of the game and uninstalled it after experiencing various problems.

I would gladly re-purchase the game at full price if I could be sure that the copy is without starforce.

I have asked on this forum several times whether or not there would be a "gold" version of the game without starforce.
