Hi SeaFireLIV - Good picture
(as is all your artwork.)

That sums up how I feel too. Thought it was
just me. I was rather looking forward to this
release. I like the sound and radio vector chatter etc and large numbers of aircraft. BUT
the amount of crashs to desktop is just shoddy
for commerical software. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif In terms of graphics terrain is not that great in BOBII.

Il2 series is still king, by a long way.

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Nice one Seafire.

As I said over on the Shockwave forums, greatest frustration for me is restarting after the CTD.

GMX have made a right dog's dinner out of this with the copy protection (Laserlock Marathon I hear).
Won't let me run the sim 99.9% of the time, but perseverance wins through.

6DOF is nice, sounds are nice, flying through clouds re nice and....urmm. Well not tried campaign as my stress levels couldn't cope with the delays in restarting it...so I'll stop there http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I wonder if Shockwave is getting the grief that Oleg does here.... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I think Ill pop over to thier forum to see..... oh wait.... is there anybody that you can even go to othr than some web admin.....?

I am thinking that a lot of people will be getting some jam to go with that buttered toast over here.....

No not really. The big problem is with GMX.
They are Piss Poor & not worthy of being in business.

I do hope Shockwave get the bugs sorted as it is Potentially a very good Sim & would be a shame if it went belly-up.

Great pic Seafire, sorry to hear about the trouble you had with this, your review sounded quite hopeful, but I guess we all just have to accept that there is only one guy out there that can realy do the job and I think its high time we made sure he donates a skin and folical sample so that future generations of flight simmers can be assured of top quality combat flight simulation's through the miracle of clone technology http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I was dubious about this one before it's release and with everything I've heard about it since release, it's moved from my "maybe" list to the "Not a chance in he1l" list.

Ir'a a pity because the campaign sounded pretty promising.

Ah well. Better to miss a bargain than buy a lemon I suppose.

Nice one. Exactly my feelings...

My copy is also on the shelf until the fix the framerates. It's simply unplayable. I feel really sorry about the BoBII team, but it's just not good enough as it is.

Latest 'update' on their forums doesn't sound too good either.

Pinning the blame on background apps and/or desktop resolution.

Had a strange experience with it today. For the first time I was able to run it (when I finally got it started) at 1600 x 1200 @75Hz with weather at full (or max or whatever) without a crash. In the software sense that is, as I am unable to get the bird of the ground with 'full realistic' flight model.

I thought 4.01 was a little tricky in the ground handling department but WoV takes the biscuit. Guess I'm not much of a pilot http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Just spent past couple of hours 'doodling' with UQMB from UberDemon. Fresh on the heels of an attempt to fly in WoV. There is little to compare graphically with FB/PF. The landscape is clearly better, the visual effects in pit are better, the control system is less frustrating too.
By the control system I mean not having to click switches and levers on the control panel.
Whilst it sounds neat and will add to the immersion I found it an intense frustration, with TiR and 6DOF it is like trying to work one of those seaside grappling hook machines. You know the ones where you spend 6 or so get a 0.50 toy as a reward when 'it' decides you've earned it.
With TiR the view and button correlation seems to randomise. One second you click left magneto and left switches, next second you click right and left goes off! And no I don't have a nervous twitch. But after my experience with WoV I can feel one coming on!

Using TiR in FB/PF after WoV I became aware of the degree of detail Oleg and co put in. Things like the pin cusion effect (or barrel distortion or whatever) when you look down and then up. It's like looking through a fish eye or wideangle lens. WoV by comparison doesn't give the same perspective effect and the graphics appear, relative to FB/PF, to be washed out and almost cartoonish.

I'll probably have another crack at it when the patch is released.

But for now it's rather like a night out with a woman of ill-repute, the real treasure remains at home loyally waiting whilst I dally!

Seriously guys, aside from the campaign, I have yet to try it due to human limitations (read: B16Enk can't get it up off the ground to save his life or country) and the copy protection deciding that I really, really don't need to spend so much time simming, which I have read is good there doesn't seem to be a lot here to draw us in.
Yes 6DOF is very nice once you've got the Merlin singing and is sorely missed in FB/PF. I keep trying to zoom in on the gauges by moving my head, or get a more oblique view on finals. But 1C:Maddox look set to blow this WoV out of the sky with their BOB.

One guy posted on the GMX forum, he was an old hand in Rowans original BoB, and bemoaned the fact that WoV was little more than the original repackaged. I'm not so sure, a good deal of work went into it and the addition of TiR support (all 15 mins of work I heard) is welcome. Besides I never tried the original so can't judge.

But his description of it on the GMX forum was very good:

"Your Granny in a Crop Top"

I'll leave you with that image, and hope it disturbs you as much as it did me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gifI think it stinks. i did try to get it working and i already had about 5-6 CTD:s. Sea was only a white mess until i changed the "weather" option to low. It looks at least 10 yrs old. maybe the patch will fix it. Looks its in beta. I unistalled it. Dont buy it. I was expectin sooo much of it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Just taken BOB2 back for a full refund also.

Not an option in the UK, AFAIK. If it is then I might send it back to Amazon. That said, just playing the strat game is mildly diverting. A much expanded strat game I might pay for, although the user interface even for the strat game is pretty poor.

I really don`t think you should take the sim back yet.

Just had news that GMX (the company that screwed us with impossible to read keys, no manual and tiny map) will be giving all purchasers of BOBII the proper stuff that the US will be getting. They`ll give details how tomorrow!

Also, Shockwave are honestly working on a patch. If they do well, i`ll post another pic which will be hopefully more positive. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I really think people are bashing this sim way too early. Sure it has CTDs but I'm sure they are fixed in some time. I love the FB series but lets face it really lacks in the single-player department. Playing campaigns with 8-32 plane skirmishes in totally linear fashion isnt very immersive especially if you have to try some missions many times to pass preset objective triggers. In multiplayer though it is the KING, I especially enjoy flying coop in FB.

In Bob2 (and 1) campaign is fully dynamic and if you dont want to be in strategic command let the AI handle it. BoB2 allows you to play as pilot in any squadron that took part in Battle of Britain in a dynamic air war with literally hundreds of planes in the air at one time where all aspects affect the outcome of the campaign.

Imagine combining that with FB's multiplayer capabilities and other fancy aspects then you'd have a winner. I do believe future 'Oleg's BoB' does have even more spectacular graphics and damage modelling but I have serious (hopefully false) doubts it is capable of reproducing the epic (and historically accurate) scale of BoB2.

So while waiting for Oleg's BoB why not pass time with BoB2, CTDs are probably going to get patched soon...

Funny it is......

Rowans Battle of Britain + improved graphics + BDG patch = BoB2 WoV

I think the radio chatter is exactly the same as in rowan's Bob...

And the strat map and interface hasn't been even touched.

The same with backgrounds.

What do they take money for?

CTDs and better graphics?

I don't get it.

The game has potentiol. But I'm almost sure it will die soon.I hope I'm wrong.

Il-2FB/AEP/PF rulez.

Not exacly..Crash cow is better name for it.
I was expecting something better that it showed up to be. It feels old and tired. Those fantastic sounds in the videos released prior to game release seem glued on. In flypast the Merlin sound starts at surtain point and faid out at surtain point - otherwise its worse than a lawnmower http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif. I cant get it to work on full switch http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif. PF I can run on full settings even playing online without to have sacrifice much of performance to looks.

I tried for three hours to get BoB2 to run and gave up on it. To play it on BoB1 settings dont do it for me. I´m not getting my moneys worth. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I had serious FPS problems but turning the weather to low helped a lot. Been practicing landings and takeoffs with Bf-109E4 some hours, the landing part in particular is hard as hell as the Bf exactly doesn't glide that gently...

Well I now have a 'fix' for my software protection errors http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
So now I get to spend a little more time experimenting in it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The FM is much harder, for me at least, than what I am used to in Fb. Not started a campaign yet as I am still in training, but have it running on all high settings now @ 1600x1200, frame rate reports slow (around 20) but it still appears smooth!!

Give it some time for the patch, then make a judgement.
If nothing else use it to practice 6DOF with TiR in preparation for the 'True BoB' http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif and enjoy the sounds!

Seafire - thanks for reviewing BoBII

You have no idea how much I wanted to see a favorable one...what a disappointment.

It looks like Shockwave has a long way to go to make WoV viable, and that with dated graphics and an old, clunky GUI. Will it be worth their effort?

I would have bought this one for $10.00-$15.00 maybe, if the 'press' had been better...but this sounds ragged at best. Even with a patch I think I'll pass...

Sorry to hear all of this, but thanks all for making up my mind for me.
when I heard that this was coming out, I was sure they were try to cash in on Oleg's market by flooding it with a 'product' that they know he's developing.

I've played many flight sims over the years and the only that were/are worth their cash value have been/are:-
Chuck Yeager's combat sim (the first one)
Dynamix's Aces of the Pacific/ Over Europe /Red Baron (I think)
Janes WW2 combat sim.
IL2 series

That's it... folks
I tried 2 of Rowans sims - I'll never try them again!
There must be at least a 2 mission demo (free) b4 I ever dream of buying.

I was in complete agreement until that last part (no the coop one). Coop online and the graphics are what sets IL2/FB/AEP/PF aprart from the rest. But for online there's no comparison between this title and AH2, until 1C gets a MMOL dedicated client/server arrangement you're still stuck with what amounts to a H2H arrangement. But integrating smoothing into an efficient netcode package is no small task, and I don;t think one they are even considering.

IL2/FB/AEP/PF lacks the MMOL experience, large numbers of contacts, and the dynamic campaign mode, other than that it IS my favorite flight sim.

Nice to see all the usual suspects from the BOB2 forums on here too. I have also shelved the game until the patch for CTDs and FPS problems is released, its just not worth my time tweaking the config and graphic settings for no gain. The campaign looks superb, but if you crash out of the pilot missions in it you are not really left with much to play. Very dissapointing all round, even with the offer of the manuals/map/keycard (as we should have got these in any case). Oh well, back to IL2 for a while - ho hum

Oh well, back to IL2 for a while - ho hum

Hi M8 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I for one never really left IL2, started to form a theory that BoB2 was/is a good 'training camp' for IL2 and a teaser for what 1C:Maddox will bring to us next year or so.

Now that I have the copy protection issues solved (thanks again for the email addy for laserlock) I will feel more inclined to try out the Campaign, there is nothing more disheartening than spending 15-20 minutes just trying to run it knowing that at some point it'll CTD and the whole 'will it or won't it start' shenanigans starts over.

I was surprised to read that Scott said GMX had sent the UK released disks to him TODAY. WTH? I thought they were couriered out last week........!!!!!

You and me both, I missed that news somewhere. ****, that means we could be another week at least for a patch if they have to check all of the GMX code and buggified copy protection nonsense. GMX certainly dragged their feet sending that over which can only make one feel suspicious.

I'm looking forward to hearing how the US and Canada + Aussies get on with the game. If they have no problems it is all down to GMX.......
