View Full Version : OT: Google Earth - Heinkel He 111 spotted over London...

I had a go at overlaying this famous photo of a Heinkel He 111 flying over London's Surrey Docks area on 7 September 1940:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/VikingG/fcf385bf.jpg

It's the first time I've tried this, and I have to say Google Earth makes the process pretty easy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I posted the file in the Google Earth community forums so you can see it for yourself in GE if you want:

http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=927975&page=0&vc=1

(notice one of the guys who replied in my thread has created a 3D model version of the photo http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif)

No, but maybe Ludwig would know something more. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

@ VG

I'm not so fammiliar with London and I couldn't find the place myself, however here's a challenge for you:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v675/Messervy/img007.jpg

I allways liked the Do-17 better that He-111 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Could it be plaistow?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v675/Messervy/Plaistow.jpg

The stadiums are roughly in the right places and if the white smoking rectangle in lower left corner is a West Ham stadium then it's......errr NOT QUITE!

If you want another interesting one take a look at the following coordinates:
Latitude: 52?20'10.69"N
Longitude: 0?11'42.51"W

you should be able to make a new placemark and then copy those coords into the right fields.

@ Messervy - now that is indeed a challenge! Plaistow looks like a good guess, but it's hard to be sure of any location that could have changed so much in the last 65 years (the River Thames made my first attempt quite easy to find). I'll see what I can do! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

In the meantime, here's a very interesting web page about the controversy of the Heinkel photo - is it real, or a fake made for Nazi propaganda?

Airminded - Trouble at Millwall (http://airminded.org/2006/09/08/trouble-at-millwall/)

Ive found these two "Blitz" related color pics in my "archives" . They are taken from ww2incolor.com

I believe both pictures were taken in London during the Summer of 1940

Taken at night, propably out of a window, showing the glow of fire in a nearby street

http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/3069/s4wwiiincolor031theblitqm6.jpg

Temple Church in London damaged in a bombing raid

http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/7880/s4wwiiincolor032templeccc9.jpg

I believe i have a mp3 somewhere covering a BBC live report broadcasted during a bombing raid on some city. Maybe it was London.

A reporter describes what he sees and hears during a imminent air raid.

I will look for it.

I can't even fathom living through that for so many years, that generation really is amazing. It really makes me reflect on this when I see the pictures in color much more than black and white, thanks Celeon.

Ive found the mp3. Its about 30 minutes long and contains among other things a live report from the entrance to a air raid shelter at Trafalgar Square during a night bombing raid on London.

It seems to be a report from the "Columbia broadcasting system"

Its really spooky, you can hear the air raid sirens in the background and the reporter describes the scenes on the streets.

He tells about people hurrying for the air raid shelters and that he can see searchlights over London.

If someone is interested i could upload it somewhere. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You might be interested in a book I recently read about the bombing of Hamburg in 1943:

The End: Hamburg 1943 (http://www.amazon.com/End-Hamburg-Hans-Erich-Nossack/dp/0226595560/) (check the customer reviews)

The book is beautifully written and, needless to say, very poignant.

@Messervy - I'm determined to track down the location of that Dornier photo. I've asked a friend of my girlfriend to help me - luckily she knows London very well and is very interested in maps, so I'm hopeful she can help http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hmmm. You should see the site in english right ?

Or is it german because of my link ?

You need to click on that small download button not the big one that reads download now.

(Its in the top/middle of that page.

Then you should see a counter (next to a button called "premium download" and when it reaches zero you can click on download and it should work.

Try again, if it still doesnt work i'll upload it somewhere else.

Hey Messervy... I finally cracked the location of that Dornier photo you posted...!

I wasted so much time looking for sports stadiums like the one in the photo (the most obvious feature) - which isn't there anymore!!! I gave up looking for ages, then today I looked at the photo again and noticed an area on the left (with smoke coming from it) which looks like a river or dock. I couldn't find a straight stretch of river that fitted, so I looked at dock areas and soon noticed the correct location...

The crazy thing its located very near where you suggested in Plaistow!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/VikingG/6244448f.jpg

It's just a little down-river from the Heinkels!

I've posted the file in the GE forum if you want to see it for yourself:

PS - if any of you watch the BBC's 'Eastenders', think of these photos the next time you see the intro title sequence!!

Ha, love the Eastenders rendition! I was just looking at page one of this thread and showing the pic to my wife when I said, "Wouldn't it be neat to have this pic playing the Eastenders theme?" Then I went to page two and scrolled down to see the Eastenders overlay. Two thumbs up from this huge Eastenders fan! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

P.S. Here in Canada, we watch it on BBC Canada. We are about a year or so behind the UK broadcasts. Phil Mitchell has just returned to the Square, only to be nicked by the Old Bill. Johnny Allen has moved in and taken over from Andy Hunter and Alfie Moon is still mooning for Moe Mitchell. If you have any spoilers, please don't post them.

I'm not a big Eastenders fan, but it does have some very watchable storylines from time to time. Sometimes it really irritates me, like when a thunderstorm starts every time something really dramatic is going to happen. Or the way that, more often than not, the music playing on the radio is deliberately appropriate to that particular scene... Ever noticed that?

However, I did enjoy the storylines you're watching now. Make sure you don't miss any episodes... I'll say no more!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

BTW - did you know that the actor Mike Reid (who played Frank Butcher) died recently? He brought a lot of humour to his character - especially his little sayings....

"Have a word wiv yerself, will ya?" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

"You're a wave short of an ocean, ain't ya?" http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

It's sad to know he won't be popping into the series again.

Kaleun1961

One can only hope that with the wonders of the Internet and the eventual ubiquity of broadband, that we will be able to call up on demand our favourite old shows. It would be well worth the price to be able to watch in sequence all episodes from such series as Coronation Street and Eastenders.
