View Full Version : Your Favorite "Obsolete" Aicraft?

What are your favorite pre/early war planes to fly? You know, the ones that everyone seems to look down on in their far superior Messerschmitts and Mustangs? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif
Personally, I find the Kittyhawks and the tubby Wildcat are pretty rewarding planes when flown right, not to mention the really really good feeling you get when you down a better plane in it.

fave obsolete? Hmmm.... I'd have to go with the I-16 here, but if I can't choose that, then I'll take a TB-3.... but wait!

I can combine the two! It's the best of both worlds!

i like trying to win DF's with the G_50

its such a peice of **** - easily bested

Has to be the Brewster in its various forms, though scoring kills with the F2A-2 is the greatest challenge due to that wretched telescopic gunsight.

The Hawker Hurricane Mk1 is ForTheWin

J8A (Gladiator)
People have a tendecy to underestimate this plane.
It outturns everyting in this sim and also have a decent (yet inferior) climbrate.
The fun thing is that people still tries to engage it in turnfights, usually leading to the enemy either getting shot at or stalling out in tight circles at ground level. I've had multiple "kills" without ammmo http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif just act as if u had ammo and they will ultimatly stall into the ground http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Also the pit & model is superb!

G50 is an wondereful aircraft to fly

08-05-2006, 08:21 PM
F16_Neo is right about the Gladiator. My real favorite is flying an I-16 Type 18 in the QMB vs. a J8A with the Moscow map, 1000 meters, disadvantage, 0500, and poor weather. The Gladiator will come tearing out of the murk shooting---you will have to move quick to avoid a bullet in the face and after that it is cat and mouse in the twilight. Most of the time the J8A nails me when I cut it too thin and stall into the ground. It can turn into the wildest roller coaster in the world trying to hit the wildly maneuvering J8A in an aircraft not designed for a maneuver contest.

08-05-2006, 09:20 PM
The IAR 81A and 81C. Both have boatloads of ammo. Their torque is overmodeled, but you can take on early Hurris and Yaks on something like equal terms if you adjust for it.

The G50 is sweet, too.

08-05-2006, 09:41 PM
I'll happily take the A6M21 against just about any opposition. Plus the I-16 or P11c for those more westerly run-ins.

Bring on the Ki-27 I say!

08-05-2006, 10:05 PM
> The A5M "Claudes", if we could actually fly them.

> F4 Wildcats.

> I-16s!!

B-239, with that I've shot down planes I should'nt have.

Cr 42 is good too, faster than a Glad and harder hitting (if less) guns.

Glad's good too.

Claude is the Holy Grail of flyables for me http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Claude---groan whimper aggghhhhhhhh. I-16 Model 10---ditto. Curtiss Hawk III---ditto.

Ki-43 in 1944/45. Someone will always try to turn with it.

Ki-27 ftw.

I'm definitely getting that addon.

Without a doubt - the B-239.

Love that airplane.

08-06-2006, 10:05 AM
Hawk81/P-40B-C. Best **** plane in game baby!

08-06-2006, 10:16 AM
For me it has to be the Wildcat.
Ive flown it since CFS2 and I still love it now. She is one of my all-time favourate aircraft, along with the Spitfire, the P-47 and the Zero.

I find the Buffalo a bit tricky to fly myself, it seems very unstable. I prefer the early zeros or the Ki-43 Ic, can't wait for the new Ki-43's in whichever add-on they're due to appear in. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Deerhunter, the trick with the Buffalo is to set fuel at 50% or less. It has a decent range even with 50% fuel. Over Java, while the Hurricane pilots would avoid dogfighting with the Ki.43 if at all possible, the KNIL pilots flying either the B-339C/D or the CW-21B would have no hesitation in dogfighting with their opponents. The KNIL pilots found that with 50% or less fuel load the Brewster would be a very close match in turning with the Ki.43. And earlier, after the initial disastrous losses over Malaya, the RAF cut their Buffalos' fuel load to 60% except on missions requiring a very long range. In the sim, too, flying at half fuel load transforms the aeroplane- try it.

G50 - gimme better armament and i will shoot down most enemy planeshttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Buffalo - u have to trim it all the flight and fight, but still good planehttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Iar - its not as bad as ppl sayhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

08-06-2006, 06:35 PM
Without a doubt the Buffalo is one of the liveliest aircraft in the sim, GerritJ9. Fascinating info---is this from BLOODY SHAMBLES?

08-06-2006, 06:48 PM
Early P40s and when it arrives the Ki27.

08-06-2006, 10:48 PM
Hurricane Mk1....

08-06-2006, 11:10 PM
I miss the P11c from way back when IL2 was IL2 and there was no FB or AEP. It would knock anything out of the sky.

DxyFlyr, Gun-N-Run, and Lokutuz can remember those days

Gladators are fun to fly especially on the winter skins with Skis!
Gladators in Estonia colors.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v476/GreyFox5/EstoniaJ8Ateam.jpg

P-400...like the 20mm. Can actually hit something with it - unlike the P39/63 37mm

Also like the I153...everyone underestimates it bite.

Leitmotiv, the info on the RAF Buffalo comes, in part, from "Bloody Shambles" and also from "Buffaloes over Singapore" plus Profile 217 and William Green's "Warplanes of the Second World War: Fighters Volume 4". The info on the KNIL Brewsters, however, can be found in Dutch air historian P.C. Boer's latest book "Het Verlies van Java, een kwestie van Airpower" which is an in-depth study of the air war over West Java from the fall of Palembang to the fall of Java. This was one of the (for me) great surprises the book contains. Unfortunately for most of you, the book is in Dutch only.
All Far East Brewsters (RAF and KNIL) had two 66 Imp. gal. fuel tanks giving a range of some 1600-1700 km. The RAF cut fuel load to 60%, or 40 gal. per tank, which would still give a range of some 1000 km, approximately the same as a P-40E on max internal fuel. Especially in the NEI, the Brewster's range was very useful indeed given the vast size of that territory.

i have no special favorite "****/obsolete" plane in game - i have some favorite scanarios with them all http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Bessarabia summer 1941:
Romanian P.11c, Hurricane Mk.I, IAR80, He111H-2
Hungarian Cr.42
Soviet I-153M62, I-16typ18,MiG3, TB-3

Malaya 1942
Japanese Ki-43-I, Ki-27
Commenwealth Hurricane Mk.IIb, Buffalo Mk.I

North Africa 1940
Italian G.50, Cr.42
British Hurricane Mk.I, J8A

and soon http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif :
Nomonhan 1939
Japanese Ki-27
Soviet I-153M62, I-16typ18

and if they based on COOP missions, planes like Ki-21, BlenheimIV, SB2 can also took part http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

the fighter i miss the most (not to speak of the bombers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif ) are the two Hawk75 as flyable.
could be wonderfull used on maps like:

08-07-2006, 06:44 AM
the Ki-27 will get small bombs http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

08-07-2006, 08:59 AM
It used to be other krap/obsolete planes but now the MC-200 is a favorite. Sweet handling and the junk ammo means you have to get close to kill or hit the cockpit for a PK. This makes it fun but challenging at the same time. Fun to manuever around the sky but challenging to get kills in.
You improve your gunnery skills just by flying any Italian plane, you are forced to. It's great to kill I-16s with but if they get on your tail your are in trouble. It's faster but takes a long time to outdistance them.

08-07-2006, 09:10 AM
Brewsters, Ki-43, Hawk 81

08-07-2006, 10:07 AM

Finnish B239's versus i153/i16's/yak1's is great fun.

08-07-2006, 03:18 PM
Ki-43C ! even if you get shot down a lot its such a delight to fly it's still fun http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

08-08-2006, 09:04 AM
Ki-43; delight to fly, great gunsight
Buffalo (the one with the same telescopic gunsight), Wildcat and Hurricane (with Mg's only) are very much fun to fly too.

08-08-2006, 09:24 AM
MIG3 for sure!
