Anybody have any experience with it? Good experiences? Bad experiences?

According to Gamespot, both the community and the FM are very hardcore and dedicated. But that review is more than a year old.

Anybody know what the community is like today?

(Yes I know the visuals can't compare to FB. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif )

I'm trying it out again after a break of 18 months or so.

It's not bad, but frankly very little has changed in the time I was away, so most of the reasons I left still apply. In a way it is very hardcore - at least many, if not most of the players would like max realism - however, that's not the way the game is going. They (iEN) seem determineed to attract arcade gamers.. oops gotta go, will write more l8er, cya. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

OK, just had friends around for lunch, beer/wine & watching the rugby... 'Swing low, sweet chariot...'/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Now I can continue.

Warbirds used to be the most realistic sim on the market and attracted players to match. I felt, 2 years ago, that they were losing the desire to be 'the most realistic.' Nowadays they pretty much admit that, saying that too much realism will make it hard for the newbies. In which case what the hell are the 'relaxed realism' and 'easy mode' options for? Whatever you think of FB, there's little doubt that a determination to be as realistic as possible drives development of the sim.

WB3 started to replace WB2 over 2 years ago, yet still many of the ac from WB2 have not made it to WB3. However, there's a great variety of ac to fly, both fighters and bombers. The Russians are particularly under-represented (only Yak9 & 3), while the USN seems well over-represented.

What WB has, which FB doesn't, is a 24/7 game world where your actions can have a direct effect on how the war progresses. Even by yourself you can capture enemy bases if you use a bit of cunning and look for an area where activity is low and you can quietly go about your business. The thing I really miss is the ongoing war. When you log in you soon become involved in whatever your side is up to, if you wish to. There's more teamwork on an average night in WB than in the average FB online war co-op - let alone an FB d/f (is there teamwork in a d/f? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ).

Apart from a greater variety of ac, you can also drive ground vehicles (GVs) (Pz IVd,h, V, Sherman, T-34/76 tanks, M-5 or Opel truck with troops for field capture, M-16 half-track with quad 50 cal AA guns, and an M-3 half-track with 75mm gun). You can also take command of the CVs or DD escorts, or even man the various AA positions on these ships.

The potential for a great game is certainly there. But we were saying that 2 years ago. Unfortunately, I don't think they have the staff to develop the game quickly enough. The potential has been there for a good 2 years now, and not much has happened. They're working on a strat system (so hvy bombers can bomb strat tgts and not just hit enemy fields in a tactical role), but there's still nothing like the system WB2 had. The odd new ac appears, but still many of the WB2 favourites have not been converted. The GV damage model needs a lot of work to be taken seriously also.

As an old player returning to the game, I pay a reduced subscription for 3 months. That makes it worthwhile for me to give it a go. However, once the offer is over I don't think I can justify paying a premium price for what's on offer. Nevertheless, I'd recommend you give it a month or 2 trial if you're interested, because it might just be for you. However, if you like your FB with full-on max realism, I expect you'll end up being a little disappointed.

Final thought: you will find the forums over there a far more pleasant place than here /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
