View Full Version : Suicide this weekend?

Hi,

in order to get a fresh experience I am thinking about commiting a virtual suicide, i.e. joining an online fight this weekend.

Well, I am still fresh to the game, but usually I am able to at least survive most of the encounters with the AI planes, so why not removing this overconfidence?

Can anyone make any suggestions so as to where should I look for? I have Il-2 not FB, and I fly soviet planes only.

Greetings,
Hans

You can fly via UBI.COM or use HYPERLOBBY to find your servers.
Especially HL shows very detailed the settings of the server and who allready joined the game. For your first session you could choose a server with less Squadies /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

On the other hand, most of those in a squad are really nice fellas and might give you some tips and hints, or even train with you, a little. ( => playing around, not shooting /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif )

Besides that, there are always some nOObs-Servers open to join. This is always a good chance to test unfamilliar aircraft and stuff. There's a lot more "test and crash" on these servers /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

hope it helps!

Thank you all for the comments and encouraging...

Aikin-Bones, this link I will probably need _after_ my first night online, I suppose...

The squads, well, I would be glad to join one, perhaps, someday, but I do not have time to invest in the game on regular basis, I do not intend to buy the FB in the near future (two kids, one salary). Nor am I going to invest in the equipment.

R.B.Jockey, are you still playing Il2?

Ok I'll try this one out, not sure today or tomorrow.

Do I need to know something? Technical issues? Nettiquette?

For instance, should I say after logging in: "Hallo everybody, I am new here!" and risk having a Luftwaffe pilot on my 6 going for an obvious kill two seconds later?

Depending on the icon settings, and how many people online usually hard to find anyone in particular. Just don't fly straight and level and look around alot. Most of my kills have been on limited icon servers where ya can sneak up on an unsuspecting victim without that neon icon over you head.

I recommend you shop for a squad. A squad is a great resource, you find new friends, have some sparring partners for practice, and you learn how gratifying teamwork can be.

Be prepared to be humbled! I'm new to this game myself and haven't gotten a single kill yet!
Don't be discouraged and keep practicing!

Yes I can imagine that, but I cannot commit myself to be online for so-or-so many hours online on regular basis... Besides, many squads whose homepages I stumbled upon required their members to have a decent flight control (while I have a basic analog joystick) and to use a voice communication stuff I don't have at all. Or do I? I have (i.e. my wife has) a microphone, can I use it somehow online????

Don't be shy about e-mailing the squad COs, I haven't meant one yet that isn't willing to help, listen, or advise a prospect on how to get up and running within their means.

Some squads that participate in the online wars are a bit stricter, but there are less strict squads, like the Blitzpiggies, their pretty open minded.

S! HansKnappstick and welcome to our little community /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

You can see squads that are advertising for pilots on these very boards check here :

http://forums.ubi.com/messages/overview.asp?name=us_il2sturmovik_sq

Not every squad has high demands on your time, some only fly once a week. However, you will struggle I think to find a squad still flying IL-2 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Take a look around squad websites and read about the philosophy behind the squad. Some (like mine) are full realism squads and only fly at the higher difficulty settings. Others prefer different settings, may or may not be invlolved in online wars. Some squads have 'wars' with other squads - it all depends.

Nothing wrong with asking for help, and nothing wrong with being new! Everyone one was new once /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif You will have a very steep "Learning-Curve" but hopefully you will love every minute of it!

Another good discussion board is here : http://oldsite.simhq.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=98&DaysPrune=10&submit=Go

Good luck and start saving for FB /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Surprisingly there are quite a few still flying IL-2 Sturmovick. (Yes RBJ, it's true! Not a lot of 'sliders' though.)

Do it! You might surprise yourself!

Try flying HyperLobby. Go to this link:

http://hyperfighter.jinak.cz/

download the client and have fun.

I try to go daily and fly. I've gotten better flying against humans.

They're nice people there, nice smooth servers and varied realism settings.
