View Full Version : Simple Idea for a great effect! - Pilot Killed

Hi all!

I was just thinking how well done the effects are carried out in IL2 when the player's pilot is wounded (I see red pain!), and particularly when a pilot is killed:

You hear a loud <bang!> as a shell pierces your ship and presumably the pilot, and everything goes instantly black. Frankly this little touch is quite unsettling every time it happens to me. Really makes you think about how it was in RL. The only problem is you can still hear the engine running.

Wouldn't it add to the effect if at the same time, the sound gradually fades away? i.e. when the pilot is killed, vision goes out completely and hearing gradually fades out to nothing within a second or two. Maybe even overlapped by a high-pitch tone, like your ears start ringing loudly as everything goes silent. Then.... nothing. This would really augment the shock of "sudden death" in the cockpit and almost make you want a minute of silence before you hit the "Refly" button.

This is probably the most simple request ever to implement, and would make an already heart-pounding moment almost severe!

Good idea. :-)

Suppose you will get a minute of silence when people reboot because they think the computer chrashed.

BTW, it happened to me several times that I was killed while firing my guns (head-ons, brrr...) The plane goes on firing until it hits the ground or runs out of ammo.

Actually, you wouldn't need anything that sound intense. Maybe just a pilot pain sound, either a grunt or a short "arrrrgh!". Then, no sound and black screen. C'est finis.

I like how jarring it is right now (besides the sounds you shouldn't hear). And it contrasts well with the wounding-to-death where the picture already does gradually fade out to black.

Egad... human sounds in a flight simulator would be beaucoup de fromage!! Last thing IL2 needs is to play over-the-top, macho grunts and yells like we hear in Far Cry when your Jack Carver is shot. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif This game emulates sensory input to the pilot's eyes and ears, not the pilot's vocal reactions.

Besides, I can hear my own girlish squeals of fright when something bad happens to my pilot! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Yes... then you see a bright light... and then...faces... it's that you, grandma?

Clearly you've never played Red Baron 3D. The pilot screams were quite effective.

Yes sound effects should follow visual effects I agree. Very cool idea you came up to, mean_mango. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Depends on where you're hit and how hard. Even non-fatal which I don't haveta guess about.
You might hear a thud and see a flash. Mostly you ain't gonna care much anyway.

Fade to black, kill the sound, see if there's a later.

At first I was disappointed by the simple black screen, but its really quite striking. The lack of sound would be great. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

My own cursing usually drowns out the engine sound anyway. after the black screen you should see a gateway to hell if you're flying a ki-84 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

LOL

Or what about friendlies on the radio, like calling, "Pull up Red 1 (or whatever your call sign is)" or your wingman "Red 1's been hit!!" or something similar. Although i love the guns firing after the pilot is killed till they run out of ammo... looks funny, or at least i think so http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
