View Full Version : GWX 3.0 'GOLD' RELEASED!!! (Links here)

J5_Lehmann

On behalf of the entire GWX Mod Team, I am pleased to announce our 'Gold' release...

GWX version 3.0!!!

The primary objective of this release has been to consolidate all official GWX files and fixes released to date for SH3.

Before today, for a full and correct GWX installation, you had to first download GWX 2.0, then download GWX 2.1, and finally download the fixes released by bigboywooly on top of it all.

Now before getting all upset that we haven't jam-packed it with tons of new features... we have added a few. (Watching you all speculate over the last weeks... its been hard to keep silent.)

Features:

First and foremost... something I consider to be a MAJOR breakthrough in SH3 environmental work. The environmental files for the GWX 16 kilometer atmosphere mod have been overhauled with the critical assistance of Subsim forum member "Onelifecrisis." Most of you are familiar with his previous releases adjusting the Sh3 environmental files, and his user interface modifications. OLC was the first that I am aware of to definitively remove the obnoxious horizon defect in currently available 16 km environments... In GWX 3.0 we have blended elements of our own work that we wanted to retain... with his awesome work.

In my opinion, we've gotten the best of both worlds.

HOWEVER! What you may not be aware of is that he has effectively REMOVED THE POLYGON effect from the waves present in ALL other environmental mods for SH3 currently available...

Before OLC's work:

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f117/KptLehmann/polygonal.jpg

... and AFTER OLC's modification with GWX 3.0! NO MORE POLYGONS with certain light angles... giving us water that is far closer to SH4 than any other arrangement currently available for SH3.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f117/KptLehmann/NewWater3.jpg
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f117/KptLehmann/NewWater1.jpg

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f117/KptLehmann/NewWater4.jpg
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f117/KptLehmann/NewWater2.jpg

Additionally, (with the control-room only) when you dive or ascend, the interior angle view changes to match the angle of ascent or decent! Special thanks to Anvart and Vickers03.

I hope you will understand that our crew is very tired... and being Christmas Eve... it is time for family, friends, and a bit of quiet peace.

Please be patient with us as we upload the GWX 3.0 files to more locations and media types for further availability over the coming days. We know the website must be updated. Just give us a few days to do what we know we need to do.

Guys, please do not expect rapid or consistent user support on Christmas Day.

GWX 3.0 TOTALLY replaces all previous GWX builds which are no longer supported.

GWX 3.0 MUST be installed over a fresh-clean installation of SH3 patched to version 1.4b.

GWX 3.0 MAY NOT be installed over previous versions of GWX.

Without further delay... you can find the current primary host site below.

(With minutes to spare!!! )

Merry Christmas Grey Wolves!!!

GWX 3.0 Silent Hunter III Mod (http://games.on.net/file/23203/GWX_3.0_Silent_Hunter_III_Mod)

Editing in progress!

Visit this thread again as this post will be further updated as time permits me. (Installation instructions and special mentions... will be posted here.)

OMFG, someone please tell me to stop using Filefront. I only downloaded the first 4 parts, and I already have 25 adwares, and that stupid fake trojan popup that refuses to go away. System restore it is, it seems.

Could someone who's more successful sometime burn these things on a CD so I don't have to format my hard drive trying to get all parts??

Great news! I've been awaiting the release of this new GWX before I reformat my game rig.

Foehammer, are you using an anti-spyware program? I use Webroot's "SpySweeper." Best antispyware program I have ever used, but it is not a free app. Still, it is not very expensive.

P.S. I am using Bit Torrent to download it all at once. It'll take longer that way, but it can take place unattended while I spend time with the family today.

I didn't know that anybody ever had a problem with filefront. I just use a free antivirus program and have never had any issues with that site.

Many thanks to the GWX crew. GWX was the first mod I ever played on SH3 and it continues to be the best in my opinion. Again, great work and many thanks. Merry Christmas to all.

Well, need some help again. After 6 and a half hours of removing the spyware and viruses I got from downloading the 4 parts, I opened the site with Firefox, AVG antivirus and Spybot running.

After denying 16 cookies from obviously bad origins, I get a "Your download has failed. You have an invalid session set. Click here to try your download again."

The Click Here brings me to the same spot.

Any clues? I really don't feel like wasting 6 hours again

I would say you've somehow allowed
bad stuff in.

Only thing I use ia AVG 8 Free version.
And I have never had any problems.

Are you the only user of your system?

I ask because people with one system
that allow thier children to use it
seem to suffer this type issue
on a daily basis.

BtS-Mods.com is hosting the full install on our server. No adware attached!
It combines all the bin files into one EXE, it's approximately 1.4 GB but considering how fast our server's been in the past I would not expect an overly long download even with that size.

Enjoy!

Gentleme uh ... persons, (hey, I don't know)
I would like to say a few words about all the hours of uncompensated effort, donated ideas, gifted design work and for all I know fingertip calluses from entering data to create the imagery we will all use and enjoy going forward.
A few words!
Actually there are no words to express the huge benefit the rest of us will enjoy!
It is spectacular! The very best "III" has ever looked!
You are hereby on notice that my crew has awarded the coveted "Triple Honorary Award" for your work here.
So the 'Hearty Handshake, the Pat on the Back & the Warm Glow of Victory' are your well deserved and just reward for this magnificent achievement! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sleepzzz.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Also, a very special thanks to UBI forum honchos and GWX Crewmen, RealJambo, VikingGrandad, and all our testing crew for working so hard to help us test our work prior to release.

In many ways, the work our testing crew does is more important than the act of modifying the files.

The testing crew keeps us out of much trouble!

It would seem Goose_green will finally return to the Atlantic and do battle once again! And it has been a very long time too!

EDIT

Since I have been away from the game for a while can someone tell me what the latest version of SH3 commander is? And lastly, is there a SH3 Cmdr fix for this latest version of GWX?

SH3 Commander 3.1.3.185

The current CFG for GWX2.1 will suffice until a new CFG is released in the near future.

This mod seems all well and good, but I now I have re download SH3 (Direct2Drive) because it doesn't work.

You should really work on getting it an uninstaller that doesn't mean you have to REINSTALL SH3 vanilla. For this day and age it's a bit rediculous that I should have to uninstall the entire game and then reinstall just to play again.

Oh and what's that? I also have to delete all of my save games.

Warning to anyone downloading this, make sure it will work with your system before hand. As per the GWX Manual:
"If you wish to uninstall GWX, then simply (lol) uninstall Silent Hunter III, delete all the folders in you rinstallation directory (e.g., C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII), and delete the 'SH3' folder in the 'My Documents' folder."

This is a prewarning for any new players who don't know about the mod scene like me. There is no other warnings about this like there should be.

I suppose the same rules/warning apply to any game prior to install for that matter.

GWX comes with a comprehensive manual (also available separately from the GWX website) and as such I would have thought anyone intending to install the mod would read it prior to committing themselves or at the very least be someone who frequents the sub simming community sites where GWX is well posted/documented and discussed.

BTW....you might also consider an addittional install in order that you can keep your previous saved games.

I hope this will not detract from your GWXperience.

Are you a modder gfdark? If so, do you know an easy, quick way to make an uninstaller for a massive mod like GWX?

I suspect not...

If you were a modder, then you'd know how much time it takes to research, plan, build and test a mod - even a small one. I strongly advise you to consider that fact in the way you offer criticisms and suggestions.

Perhaps it's just the way you phrased your complaint, but it sounds to me like you need to consider the fuller picture here. I suggest you think about what you HAVE got, rather than what you haven't. You've got many thousands of hours' work - a whole team of people's own free time - for FREE.

Originally posted by gfdark:

How many hours would you like the GWX team to spend on making an unsintaller (if it's even possible to do so), instead of spending time on finding new ways to improve the actual game experience? Or even spending time with their families and friends???

I'd say you're the one at fault here, for presuming free software will do everything you expect it to - rather than reading the manual or simply asking for advice before installing something you didn't know much about!

Lol, an uninstall package file can target direct files, folders, and even replace them with others.

Before you're going to come here and insult me like the queen ****ing bee of Shiva do your God damned homework. I never insulted the mod. I simply stated a fact that needs to be known. Most mods can be installed and uninstall in any game. Sorry that you don't know as much as you think you do.

GWX developers have stated on more than one occasion that making an uninstaller for their mod is impossible. They know more about the feasibility of a making a GWX uninstaller than you do.

Originally posted by gfdark:

To be fair, you did more than simply "state a fact" - you stated that "For this day and age it's a bit rediculous(sic) that I should have to uninstall the entire game..." That's merely your opinion, not a fact - and one which, to me, makes you sound ungrateful and lacking in empathy for the work modders do (which is not the same as an insult). That was the point of my post, which was evidently lost on you...

Yes, as you say, most mods can be uninstalled - but not ALL mods! Would I like an uninstaller for GWX? Perhaps, but re-installing once in a while is not a problem for me as I have a back-up of the stock install of SH3. Hopefully you will take Jimbuna's advice and do the same next time.

A quick search on this forum or Subsim would show you it's a fact that the problem you are attempting to highlight is one that very rarely gets mentioned by other GWX users. To be clear: it's not a problem for the vast majority of people!

Yes it's a problem. So what? My point was that you cannot expect mod developers to undertake more work, just because you (and you alone) think it's necessary.

You are over-reacting to fair criticism. I was hoping you'd calm down!

Yet again you feel the need to resort to insults and name-calling. In my initial response to you, I gave you the benefit of the doubt and the opportunity to redeem yourself - but now you're just embarrassing yourself!

If you can't be bothered to respond with something that (a) makes sense, (b) is true and (c) is well reasoned - then please don't waste your time posting again. You're not adding any value to this forum and most likely never will.

Since I alone built the installer?
You should address me and me only.

I look at the Thousands of users of GWX.
I read thier requests, thier system specs,
thier knowledge of computers, and more then you
could ever wrap your tiny mind around.

You look for self satisfaction, then fail to read simple explinations.

MOST of the users of GWX do not have TOP END systems.

Hard Drive space is limited.
THEY understand there is no going back because they did thier
Homework.

I'll not clutter up those users Hard Drives
with the files needed to un-install when
a wipe and re-install is ACTUALLY qiucker!!

I KNOW!!
I built both versions!!

And I'm not some 15 year old kid Mate!
I'm 51 today and have been into Computers since
my first Heath Kit system!

Oh. I also owned and sold the FIRST Internet Access Service in my area!

And made a Health chuck of change!

Um 1stly how big is it? lol I cant waste too much bandwith..
2ndly does it alter Gameplay? What do you recomend as the base computer to run GWX?
and 3rd how do i use it? hehe

oh btw it looks GREAT
thanks

Hi Mate,

GWX is designed to run on the standard system specs for Stock SH3.

However, the better your system, the better it runs.

It does change Game play in many ways.
The Game is no longer a Cake Walk!
Infact?
It's more of a Simulation with GWX!

You will need to think hard about what you are doing to survive.

The graphics are better,
more units then Stock,
and many surprises await you.

The latest version is around 1.4 Gigs in size.
And has a wicked cool installer.
(If I do say so myself.)

Hi All!

New to this, so please excuse me from being a bit stupid!
I have followed all the instructions to download GWX, but I am having a few problems.
1 When I tried to download a message box comes up saying 1. Find a program to open with 2 .save 3. Cancel.
So the obvious thing I thought was option 1. This sent me to the net telling me to download WinZip. So I did!

After all that the message box comes up again saying 1. Open with WinZip 2. Save to WinZip 3. Cancel

Bearing in mind that I am still quite new to all of this I went through and opened and saved all the bits and pieces and nothing seemed to happen....... Am I supposed to do something else?

Or am I doing it completely wrong?

Cheers
Mark

Try this:
1."select" all files
2. "left click"

A dialog box opens

3. Choose option "Extract to GWX 3.0"

If there is no "Extract" option try "Unzip to".

madmark878
03-23-2009, 04:53 AM
Hi Again

Tried that with no luck! There is no "Extract" or "Unzip to" options.

What is actually supposes to happen, is it the same as downloading the patch 1.4 update?

Getting very frustrated with it!!! Any other options.

I see that some people have managed to save them to disk, is there any chance of getting my hands on one of them?

Cheers

Q_Ship_mod_GWX3.0.7z
GWX_3_St_Naz_and_Schluesets.7z
GWX3.0_All_Weather_Guns.7z

GWX3-4.bin
GWX3-3.bin

Might I suggest you visit the GWX website (click on my sig)where you will find comprehensive installation instructions.

Four of your six additional mods are mine/JSGME enabled, but I'd suggest you concentrate on installing the parent mod first before adding anything else.

Okay, so I've read this thread and two things have happened:
1) I got all excited because it looks like someone has found a way to actually improve on the "stock" graphics a bit (big plus as I've got a serious gaming machine and so far, I've been pretty unimpressed with the graphics quality of this game) but there seems to be a bit of trouble with the installation

2) I'm new to this forum and am amazed at the trash talking that's out there. I'm 41 yrs old and stay away from "kiddy" forums and I didn't expect a mature game such as this to have a forum with such BS on it...wow.

Thank you for the easy installation of GWX Gold 3.0. This is awesome. Thanks to all for their hard work. I'm not sure about the weather. 6 days of straight rain from Jan 1, 1940 through Jan 6 , 1940 in AN34 area.

Love the ports and can't wait to run into a warship group.

The Best.

Is there a list of all the changes by GWX 3.0, and/or screenshots?

I hate using mods that I don't like; especially when they make me reinstall a fresh copy etc.

OK so I tried GWX 3.0 Gold today. It's pretty neat except for a few gripes. I hate when the game slows down for anything and with all the new ships and radio messages there are lots of slow downs.

The major problem though is getting radio messages that include locations that do not appear on the map. I get longitude and latitude locations but the map doesn't include them. What's worse is I got a radio message from BdU saying "attack convoy" that was directed at my sub only no coordinates for the location of the convoy were given in the message or any previous messages. Am I missing something here?

A lot of the new features are pretty cool, but there are some things that could be changed to improve GWX further.

The lower the specs of your system the more the game may slow down whilst the game engine renders the units in your 'SH3 personal world' of approx 32km.

Radio messages are there for immersion purposes mainly but some are obviously scripted from RL messages.

GWX was developed with the interests of the subsimming community at the forefront of our minds.

Whilst it is obvious one size will never fit all, looking at the thousands of downloads thus far, we (The Grey Wolves) feel we have provided a mod that has enhanced the enjoyment of thousands of subsimmers and at zero cost.

I hope you enjoy your GWXperience.

Crush depths are variable....dependant on a number of factors.

I wanted to offer my praises of GWX 3.0, though I'm still a long ways from fully-appreciating all the changes.

Being an idiot, I failed to realize my new Trackirpro 4 would bind me out of the crew management screen, and instead thought I'd done something wrong with the installation.

Anyway, great stuff! The graphical refinements, in particular, are fantastic.

My GWX time is limited, but there is no excuse for being 5 months late on the 3.0 download! Downloading now...

I've been tweaking 2.1 to my liking - I like the sonar contact lines, the torpedo tga on the map and the colored ship contacts. This was long ago and I've completely forgotten how I did this. With 3.0 comes a fresh install and scratching my head as to how I did this.

Torp.tga, UnitAir (and all the others in /gui/units)...I can't remember what else. I think I might have done it the hard way, with two different installs (vanilla and GWX) and visually compared the tgas. Hmm...upon further inspection I might have swapped some tgas in /gui as well. Anyone with greater knowledge than I clear this up? Thanks!

I hate to sound needy, but maybe someone can help me.

Since I installed GWX 3.0, I've noticed a misplaced texture...basically, a square of what looks like white and blue wall texture on the bottom of the CO2 gauge in the game view.

Since the installation of SH3 doesn't have the textures unpacked, could anyone tell me what texture I should open and brush up to fix that? It would be much appreciated.

EDIT: Included a picture to explain what I meant. I hope I'm not the only one with this glitch. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

First, you need to have SHIII installed and patched to v1.4b. Then all eight parts of GWX 3.0 must be in one folder. Double click on the gwx.exe and away you go. GWX is self installing so just follow the prompts.

Well, that is probably your problem. Your game download from Mininova is probably bad.

Since you got this download from Mininova and that means you've downloaded a torrent. I have to inform you that torrents are a form of piracy and discussion of such things are not allowed on these forums. It might be a good idea for you to brush up on the forum rules (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/3311031057).

Hi,

I have spent the past 3 days trying to get the GWX 3 working on my computer. I have done the clean install, I had no mods, but I did a clean install, have the latest patch, and when I run the GWX program I see the wolf howling, then the screen with the sub, wolf, and torpedo. However once the load bar reaches all the way to the end, the game crashes.

I am unfortunately on Vista but I run it as administrator, tried different compatibilities, etc. I just can't get the game to run. I don't know where to look for help so I figured I could post on here and someone would take pity on me and help me play this game.

When the horizontal load bar become almost full red , the loading process seems to be stopped , I was the same as you thinking about a possible crash , but I wait a bit more time ,about one minute and the Game start normally , in my opinion probably you need to wait a bit more to see the game start and running properly

Hi MeinTotalausfal,

Many of the radio messages in GWX were taken from real life communications with/from U-boats and exist in-game for the sake of immersion. There are no functional beacons in SH3 so it isn't something you have to worry about doing. (Though I wish we did have to use them.)

It would appear that the message you received related to an order by BdU to a given boat to broadcast beacon signals to form a wolfpack attack in real life... or to transmit weather data periodically back to HQ (Befehlshaber der U-boot)

A few weeks already playing SH3 1.4 plus GWX3 , overall with the GWX3 addon the SH3 game become incredible realistic and somehow even better than SH4 ,of course only the water of the real environmental mod of SH4 overcome the water of SH3 due to the transparency and overall look

Since the addition of GWX3 to my SH3 game I have been continuously killed , this addon ( even with some few bugs ) is Amazing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif , congratulations to the GWX3 team , well done http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif

I want to thank the GWX team for their excellent work on the mod. Here is my story: I bought SHIII many years ago when it first came out totally thrilled with the idea of playing it. I had a 2003 Sony Vaio desktop with a P4 3.2GHz CPU, ATI Radeon X1650 vid card, 2GB memory, WinXP - powerful specs all of which should have been more than enuff to run the game. Even the game said so. Game installed OK but crashed to black a minute or so after loading. Never could get to naval academy much less a mission. I would go to museum every time in order to test my latest troubleshoot fix and it would always crash after a few seconds. My entire computer would crash to black with weird buzzing throbbing static coming out of the speakers. Then I would have to restart my computer with the on button and reboot. I did everything I could to get the game to run; spoke with UBI, went to forums, took it to the tech guy at work. Nothing worked. I even bought another one on ebay thinking the CD was defective. Same problems. I could have learned a new language with the time I spent trying to get SHIII to play on my computer. It drove me insane. Finally gave up and put the game away. Then a year ago I moved out of the country and bought an inexpensive laptop to use while my desktop was in transit. It was an Acer Aspire 4520 I bought it for $460 refurbished online at Tech for Less. It has a pretty good feature set for such a cheap laptop but I held out no hope it would ever run SHIII so I never bothered to try until recently. It has an AMD Athlon TK-55 dual core processor and a Nividia GeForce 7000M vid card and Vista Home Premium and a 14.1" screen. Well I loaded it up a few days ago and damn if it didn't run the game!! Its specs must be inferior to my desktop. But I downloaded GWX Gold and it still runs. Damn! I did the first two parts of the Naval Academy with no problems. I am euphoric! Well, I know a lot of you have moved on to SH4 and SH5 soon-to-be but for me SHIII is a brand new game! I hope I am not speaking too soon and it starts to crash.

Anyway, I have two questions: I like the larger size compass but it keeps popping out from the right and getting in the way when I am panning with my mouse. How do you keep it in place until you want it? Also, my mouse arrow in the game is kind of loose and sloppy and overshoots the icons I want to click and slows down my reaction speed. I don't know how else to describe it. It is harder to control and less precise. Is there any way to fix that?

Again my utmost thanks to the GWX team and you SHIII aficionados who are keeping this great game alive.

Great news and kind words.....welcome to GWX Kaleun http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/welcome.gif

You might want to go into your laptops Control Panel where you can access the settings for slowing down the movement rate of your mouse.

I suspect that will also help prevent it travelling off right of your screen and bringing up the compass.

Is there a way to remove the extra (immersion) radio messages? I only want the ones that deal with what's actually happening or the ones that give me orders. All the extras just get in the way and slow down my game (dropping speed to 1 when at 512, ex.)

Hi,

This mod was recommended to me after I bought SH3 on steam. Now I've downloaded all the sections of the mod and the executable file. Yet whenever I run the installation it says that there are Modded files detected yet there aren't. I even un-installed and ran the mod installer over a fresh install of SH3 and still the same message. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the SH Forums, Fangar. Happy to have you aboard.

You don't mention whether you have patched your copy of SHIII up to v1.4b. You need to do that before installing GWX.

You might be doing this already but I'll mention it anyway. All files for GWX must be in the same location or folder when installing. Meaning a seperate folder other than the folder where you have SHIII installed.

I have a new fresh load of SH3 on my Win 7 OS (64bit) computer. I have followed the instructions on how to load it and everything works fine. I have also loaded Sub commander and it also works fine. However when I try to load GWX3 I get an error saying what directory is disk 7 located in? Am I loading the wrong version?

any help will be appreciated.

If you are using the 7 bin files plus 1 exe file version of GWX ensure that the exe file has the '.exe' extension and put all 8 files into an empty folder before double clicking on the exe file.

The programme should then ask you to point it to your parent/game folder location and the installer should take care of everything else.

sorry - maybe a stupid question, but I have the Steam version of SH3 and it's only showing "v1.4" not 1.4b. Am I safe to install or should i be looking for the 1.4b patch? (not sure if steam will allow one of their hosted games to be messed with by an offline patch...?)

Just wondered if anybody here has installed GWX3 onto their clean steam SH3 installs and had it work ok...?

Thanks again. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

it is a very impressive mod. Show so much work and attention to detail. But unfortunately its just not for me, and I've un-installed it.

Basically, while returning from my second mission (which is tedious enough as it is), I eventually decided to ESC back to base just to stop getting the millions of seemingly pointless messages on the radio. I stopped reading them after one seemed to be telling me to return to Kiel, but when I ESC'd back to base to check which port I was now supposed to be based at, it took me back to my normal base - so that one seemed completely wrong.

Sorry, but too many messages are as bad, if mot worse, than not enough of them as I never read them anymore and could well miss an important one.

anyway, after ESCing back to base I just felt I couldn't face another long tedious trip to my next mission constantly interupted by less than useful radio blurbs.

ANyway - there it is. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

HW3

There is a solution for the radio messages.
WBNN Mission Orders Lite.

http://www.subsim.com/radioroo....php?do=file&id=1385 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1385)

This mod drastically reduces the number of radio messages you receive during the campaign to a total of just 229 which are all relevant to missions scripted into GWX or important to your decision making process (e.g. location of supply ships). WBNN is designed for GWX but will work with any mod.
