One of my long time fav.

If the 3dsmax model looks that nice, it's gonna be awesome! Against a Ki84 it will make awesome fights.

The great debate:

Was Pappy Boyington's plane really named Lulubelle? Some believe it was named Lucybelle, after a woman named Lucy Mal-somethingorother. The only known picture of the famous plane with the name visible is this one:

Lulubelle, or Lucybelle?

I've been to Pappy's grave at Arlington NC. Actually laid a flower on it. But he didn't tell me if it was Lucybelle or Lulubelle.

Chimp:-
I think "Pappy" Boyington had more inaccurate stuff written about him than any other WWII pilot. And "Pappy" was at the root of a lot of it. To begin with, nobody in VMF-214 ever called him Pappy. Some reporter hung it on him after the war, and he liked it, so it stuck. An interesting character.
I understand he seldom flew the same plane twice. According to my sources, he always flew "the one that looked the worst" as a way to inspire his men.
BTW, there's just a red X where the pic should be?

Anyway, my source is "Black Sheep One - The life of Gregory "Pappy" Boyington" by Bruce Gamble -Presidio Press.

SkyChimp, when you say "convert to Max" does that mean covert the model to Max format or does that mean the modeler will covert to Max and redo the model in Max format? If it's the latter, would that be acceptable to Oleg?

That's interesting. I knew he wasn't known as "Pappy" until after the war,but I never knew he never flew the same fighter. I always assumed he had "his" fighter.

And the members of the squadron weren't misfits as Boyington would have you believe. A lot of them took exception to that characterization. Most, if not all, were very professional and career oriented fighter pilots.

But there is no denying Pappy was a character. He f*cked-up a "fly-over" for the Chiang Kai-Shek and Madam Kai-Shek when he was in the Flying Tigers. He apparently did not follow the flight plan, got off course, and 4 in his flight had to make crash landings because they ran out of fuel. Some claim he did this in a "hang-over" state.

And there is no denying his skill in the air:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/moh/citations_living/z_moh_navy.gif

For extraordinary heroism and valiant devotion to duty as commanding officer of Marine Fighting Squadron 214 in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Central Solomons area from 12 September 1943 to 3 January 1944. Consistently outnumbered throughout successive hazardous flights over heavily defended hostile territory, Maj. Boyington struck at the enemy with daring and courageous persistence, leading his squadron into combat with devastating results to Japanese shipping, shore installations, and aerial forces. Resolute in his efforts to inflict crippling damage on the enemy, Maj. Boyington led a formation of 24 fighters over Kahili on 17 October and, persistently circling the airdrome where 60 hostile aircraft were grounded, boldly challenged the Japanese to send up planes. Under his brilliant command, our fighters shot down 20 enemy craft in the ensuing action without the loss of a single ship. A superb airman and determined fighter against overwhelming odds, Maj. Boyington personally destroyed 26 of the many Japanese planes shot down by his squadron and, by his forceful leadership, developed the combat readiness in his command which was a distinctive factor in the Allied aerial achievements in this vitally strategic area.

Secudus, convert means change the file format so that the model can be opened in Studio Max. Maya, like Studio Max is professional 3D software sued a lot by the motion picture industries. It's very powerful and in a lot of ways better than studio max.

Skychimp -

Maya was used to make Final Fantasy, Gollum's model, Stuart Little 2, and Spider-Man (etc. etc. etc.) I'm surprised that a modeler of your talent didn't know about it - you should definitely learn how to use it - from what I hear, its more powerful than Max when it comes to modelling. I've only animated with it - played around a bit with the modelling.

(Hopefully you take this post the right way - I really appreciate all your work and just wanted to give some hopefully helpful encouragment)

It looks fantastic except for one thing. The artist made the top of the horizontal stabilizer
in the medium glue instead of the dark sea blue like the tops of the wings. It could easily
be corrected I'm sure, that would make it more accurate. Otherwise, can't wait to get
inside and ring it out.

I love Boyington. Let me say that upfront.

However, his kill total is wrong. It is virtually certain he did not score as many victories with the Flying Tigers as is claimed. Probably 2.5 max. He almost certainly did not exceed Rickenbackers record for kills in WW1.

I love Pappy Boyington. Heck, I even like the "bent winged bird". But a certain former Governor of a Western State is almost certainly the leading Marine Corps ace of WW2.

Sup fellas! (a little late on this thread)

3DSMax vs. Maya:

I would have to say that Maya is the more powerful App. for high-end stuff. (Nurbs models, advanced shading, lighting, caustics ect.) But im finding Max better for the low-poly game arena. It's just.. more simple. Max was made for the poly, Maya was made for the Nurb.

Maya's big advantage for me is the interface. No pushing icons on the far reaches of you monitor. When you hit the space bar, you get this killer "marking menu". Read up on that, it ROCKS. When working in Maya, you only use the alt, cntrl and space bar. Everything is that close. Oh, and QWERTY of course. That said, I should learn all of Max's hotkeys and UI customizations stuff!

Lucybelle vs. Lulubelle:

I'll just make a texture of each!? And the paint scheme for that maya model was made from a reference of Pappy's 86 that siad Lulubelle so!? History is all in where you read it.

Coversion from Maya to Max:

Well I didnt have to start it over completely. But it sure was messy! Vertices stacked 16 deep in places. Nasty nasty! After a week of cleaning it up, you would never know it wasnt done in Max to begin with. Sure would have been easier though!!! And yes, the pivots were all reset and now redone. UVs should be redone by next week.

So here's some parting shots... What a fun project! I sure hope they USE IT!!!

Later, =sp=
