A few minutes ago I replied to someone's post saying that IL-2 was a great bargain at the current price of $20 USD. Then I though about it a little and decided maybe it's not so cheap after all.

January 2007: Originally received IL-2 as a gift (package included Pacific Fighters and Lock-On). Quickly became addicted to IL-2 and Pacific Fighters, but found Lock On to be too complicated.

March 2007: Purchased IL-2 1946 (download version) for $39 USD. Started playing on-line and frequenting the IL-2 forums. Then I discovered that I needed more horse power. So here's how it went from there:

$150 Upgraded video card.
$80 Memory upgrade

$250 Disk drive upgrade (Game requires a lot of disk space)

Still not fast enough....

$1,200 to build new system.

To solve a "sticking in memory" issue I bought the DVD release for another $24 ($20 + 4 for shipping).

Total so far: $1,704 and worth every penny.

Dude!

You know darn well that information isn't to be released until after the nuggets are addicted! I'm recommending a General Court Marshall.

Nothing to see here, folks! The man is obviously deranged. Move along!

I feel your pain. However there's good news: I just save a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

Ah....and we have the SBD. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

Finally a reasonable accounting of the cost of this hobby! It's still cheap compared to most hobbies. And it won't kill you as quick as say a motorcycle. (it takes years for the colesterol build up from this game to kill you)

$250 for a hard drive upgrade? This ain't the 80's, what did you buy that ran over $120?
Last internal I bought was a 160G ATA133 WD that ran me just under $50.

I've been playing and upgrading IL2 since 2001 and ain't spent half what you have! That includes
splurging $100 for a neat stick on sale.

Those $250 disk drives are 15000 RPM SCSIs. I've got 4 36GB drives in a striped and mirrored RAID (one 72GB logical drive). I actually use this box for work too.

So saying that is for IL2 is a bit of creative accounting then?

Well, it does take up 4+ Gig. I got so tight that disk defrag couldn't run until deleted some temp files. Plenty of room now. At least, until I install Vista 64.

Still well worth the investment.

Didn't you read the small print where it says "with a sensible diet"? LOL!

I always thought that chicken was okay and then I find out that legs and thighs are as bad
as regular hamburger. But I still eat em!

Now we're talking chicken? The only chickens I see here are the 109 pilots when a Spitfire shows up http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif CNTL E anyone?
If anything, Il2 only adds to the "Il2 simaholics" weight control problem (for us "old geezers" who's metabolism has slowed long ago)...Maybe someone could do a test to see how many calories are burned during a set time of adrenaline pumping, nail biting dog fights on HL. Could that really count as exercise? I for one truly hope so. If not, then I had better do some extra pushups/situps to augment the countless hours I have spent in my "sim chair".

Regardless what one may pay for their computer. It can do more than just play this or other games. So the value factor of the computer increases as compared to a Telivision set. For example; my friend has a $2,300.00 Sony telivision set beautiful. With a playstation he plays his games, I play mine. I've been playing Il-2 for 5 or 6 yrs. every day for at least an hour. So just as an example; at $40. what I originally payed for the game divided by 1hr. X 365 days X 5yrs. plus the ability to build missions plus skins, plus on-line play with people I'll never meet. Priceless. for me anyway.

Wow!!! I thought it was just a game. A good, maybe even a great game. You guys wax poetic so much you make it sound more like a religion. Maybe you could start a Scientology type religion. Olegology anyone? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

That could work. There's very few sightings and while once he did answer supplicants now only
a few are deemed worthy, or you can go to the one true church and get the new words about the
new world, nay, heaven being created for those who sacrifice to the hardware giants.

I'm more willing to pay for the software/hardware/upgrades for IL-2 conpared to just the price of some other game. I'm not saying other software isn't worth the money, but rather that the vast amount spent on Il-2 is a bigger bargain to me compared to $50 spent on some random other title.

When it comes down to it, nearly all of my other titles are just that, games. Where as IL-2 is a hobby.

OH, I forgot to add in the $150 for 2 more joysticks (one was a piece of ****), and another $150 for a TrackIR. Actually, I bought a second TrackIR so my son could play too, but I won't count that one.

That brings me up to about $2,004. AND STILL WORTH EVERY PENNY!
