Had the opportunity to tour the USS Midway CV-41 in San Diego during my ongoing business junket. Thought I'd share a few photos.

She's a beauty...

Spent an hour talking to this gentleman. His name was John and he was a WWII Marine veteran with 133 missions in the Pacific as a rear gunner in the SBD and Avenger. Simply amazing. Wished I'd recorded the conversation...

Even Ernest was speechless.

5,287 knobs in the radio room. Apparently never used as no one was quite sure what they were for.

This was an impromptu visit and unfortunately we weren't prepared to take a lot of pictures. Had to use the camera sparingly. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Won't make that mistake again.

All the shots I have of the SBD... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif

Thank you for posting these. A favorite uncle served on the Midway in the 1950's and I was aboard for a very short time in the early 60's. I have stolen these pictures and I will print some to send to my Uncle. (no computer in his house)

The Midway visited Perth WA in the late 70's early 80's.

It was too big to fit into Fremantle harbour so when I went on the tour we had to go out to her on a lighter.

If memory serves me right her she had a deck full of F4 Phantoms all spray painted with black diagonal lines. We asked one of the sailors why and he said they were being retired.
