Hello all! Im currently running my computer with a ATI Radeon 9600 with 128mb. My comp is AMD 2800 and I have got 1024 mb RAM.
I want to get a new video card. I dont want to buy a new rig till BoB comes out. Just upgrade my video card till BOB is out...
My question is, would a 9800 with 256 mb improve performance alot?! I want to spend around 100-150 euros. Will I get a better videocard for that money?! If I go with Nvidia what card would improve performance but still be cheap?
thx for help!

GH, I have the same card, and I love it. I also run an AMD, but its at 3200. Same memory as you.

From my understanding, the extra memory on the 9800 won't really speed the game up much, but will allow perfect mode.

Maybe one of the more technical guys here can give a better answer.

I've got a very similar setup to you and from what I have read going for the extra 128mb of vid ram would make little difference to playing IL2.

Best place to ask these questions though is the tech forum.

I had 9800Pro (ATI version) and 128MB memory.

I ran 1280x960x32, Perfect Mode, just a small amount of AA and AF though, and I got 45 - 50 fps over mountain terrains, much less low over Berlin city ... that is a killer. But, my fan died so I went back to my -9200. I would like to get a replacement fan, but have not bothered with finding out if that's possible (I don't fly FB/PF much anymore and its the only thing I need 9800 for). I used CAT 5.3 drivers I think, the default drivers out of the box had issues with FB/PF.

When I had to take out my broken 9800 and slip in my 9200 (no fan, works forever) it too takes advantage of the newer drivers without a peep. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Its very easy to replace cooling fans on the 9800. They're is a product called the artic cool that does a terrific job, it takes up another PCI slot, not because its needs to plug into the motherboard but because its so big that it takes up the space for another card. A standard fan would also be really easy to install, all you need is a pair of plyers and some of the heat sink adhesive (usually comes with the fan).

A 6600Gt is a way better buy. I have a 9800Pro, but it is pretty old. Im pretty sure you can find one for that price. The VGA charts on Toms Hardware are a really good quick source for comparisons.
