You need:

The US birds can be had with the Aces Expansion Pack and some patching, but really, just get the DVD shown above and ignore the jets and whatever else you don't care about.

If the game you have is not titled "IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles" then I'm afraid there is absolutely nothing you can do. I suspect that what you have is the original IL-2 game (simply titled "IL-2 Sturmovik") that was patchable up to version 1.2ov before support was completely discontinued in 2003. There are no expansion packs for the original IL-2 game, and to my knowledge it has never been modded.

Your best option is to get the "IL-2 Sturmovik 1946" pack pictured above, which is a culmination of all the expansion packs for the second generation of IL-2 releases that began with "IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles" in 2003. The FB series includes many, many planes that were used by the U.S. including P-38 Lightings, P-51 Mustangs and F4U Corsairs. This is the version of the series that all mods are based on as well. You can download the 1946 game from Steam.

Yes, get 1946, it's $10 or less in the US.

There's at least one US plane in the original, the Bell P-39 (though you wont find US markings for it, the original only caters to the Russian theatre of operations).
