View Full Version : Strange Problems with the game

Ok, I have played this game for years not on perfect settings because I didnt have a good enough system. I finally got a better computer with the following stats:

CPU- AMD Opteron 170 (dual core)
VIDEO- Ge-Force 7900 GT 256 mgb ddr3 pci express
RAM- 3 gigs of corsair ram

Now, with that, I should be able to run this game smoothly on perfect settings no problem... I mean come on.. im running several other higher demanding games on full settings (bf2, lord of the rings online, ArmA demo) - just to name a few of the bigger ones - So logically im thinking this game should be easy to run full settings... but yet when I go online, I get average 10 fps on the ground and barely 15 in the air... I dont know what is wrong and its very frustrating as I cannot play with these types of frames.

My first thought was my dual core cpu, so I dled the AMD dual core optimizer and tried that.. failed..

My second thought was that my confi.ini was messed up.. but after several checks I dont think it is, ill post below just to be sure. The following is the open gl info only, as that is the mode I use and whoever answers should only need this info.

My last thought was that I had wrong drivers/bad drivers.. so I driver cleaned my pc using a driver cleaner and installed the latest ones from nvidia site... still, no improvement...

Someone please lend a hand... this is so frustrating that im about to just give up.

This could have something to do with playing online - you may be playing with people who may not neccesarily have the same computer as yours (if lesser, then it will slow your pc down).

You have a broadband connection, by way of example, but there is no way that you can download a file at broadband speed from a server that is only capable of sending the file at dial-up modem speed.

Try offline and see if you get the same results.

There are many games (I believe BF2 suffered from this as well), where you have to disable 1 cpu because it slows the game down...

I do not think il-2 makes use of both cpu's, so this might well be the case here as well...

I found the following in a search on the technocal help on these forums, about problems with dualcores:

According to Microsoft a hotfix is supposed to be in the next WindowsXP servicepack. The problem can be solved now though.

'A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article.
Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing.
Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.'.

There are a couple of solutions available:

You can get a driver for the AMD X2 CPU here:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/...82_871_13118,00.html (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html)
Present driver version (January 2006) for WindowsXP is named:
AMD Athlonâ"ž˘ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe)

At least 2 users of Pacfic Fighters solved the stutter problems by doing what's described above:

yea, I thought if anything it might be a problem with dual core, so I dled the amd dual core optimizer and it wouldnt work, technically doing that is the same as doing anything those threads list.

I have a broadband connection and get a constant 60-100 ping on the server I play on (zekes vs wildcats in hl) so I dont think thats the problem... and it seems if I turn my settings off of perfect Ic an play just fine... everything just looks extremely crappy.

And I have a AMD opteron not a AMD 64 x2.. so im not sure those drivers would work anyhow.

Also within my confi.ini what exactly do I need to run with perfect water? ive read so many posts about it but I am confused, I get perfect water but im still confused as to what the exact settings should be, so if someone could let me know I would be forever grateful.

You can turn on dual core support for this game:

but yet when I go online, I get average 10 fps on the ground and barely 15 in the air

I have a broadband connection and get a constant 60-100 ping on the server

Do you have 15 frames constantly or usually 60-100 and only poor frames in some areas. That might be the engine, I am not sure if it is justified that it will bring the fastest pc down, but I think it will, when the scenery reaches a certain amount of complexity. I have 40-60 frames online (AMD 4000+,2GB,x800) but on some maps it drops down to 20. For example when I am flying over a detailed harbour construction.

Also google couldn't find a Geforce 9700 GT, which card do you have?

no constant, no matter where i am, Ic ould go to the most baren part of the map and still get constant 15 flat... doesnt go above.. and when things get nasty such as dogfights you really dont want to know what happens to the frames then.

Oh, oops I meant to say 7900 gt, I was just really tired when I made the post.

I would bet on the video drivers.
what version are you using?
I had best luck with 93.71 available here

already taken care of, as I said above I have already updated to the latest drivers needed for my vid card from nvidia...

If someone could please explain the difference between directX mode and open GL mode and the strengths and weaknesses of both? Because if I switch to direct x mode my frames shoot up, of course I cant figure out how to setup perfect settings on direct x yet but still.

ok, so I did some expirimenting with the settings.

With default settings, no perfect mode or nothing im hitting a max of 55 fps, on ground in air in combat with a res of 1024 x 768 x 32.

With perfect settings and water=4 I get max of 30 frames, in combat I go below 20, on the ground im at 15... with same res.

With water=2 perfect settings, I get a max of 35 fps, below 25 in combat, below 20 on the ground or around cities with same resolution.

Im getting very frustrated... this game cannot be this demanding that my 7900 gt cant handle it... ive got the cpu speed, plus the dual core, and ive got the ram.. im so confused as to why it wont work..

im going to attempt a reinstall of the game and see if that might fix anything.

Any extra help people can give would be appreciative.

Your problem probably isn't your video card-I have a 7900GT and it runs like a champ.

I seem to remember some people with the Athlon Dual Core processors having problems a while back, and there was some kind of config. file fix listed in a patch Readme. The Readmes are in the folder with your game, so you might find it there.

Have you checked the Community Help Forum? That's where the hardcore computer experts hang out, and they love showing off their superior knowledge.

well im not computer dumb ... I know alot about computers and actually have finally solved the issue.

After updating drivers, getting the dual core thing working, and making sure everything else was fine I started thinking about other factors, such as my gpu temp, and my AA and AF settings, after tweaking my card settings for the game, I finally came to the conclusion that not having AA or AF was giving me hurts on my fps because the textures arent that great, normally a game with great textures you wouldnt really need to run AA or AF but with this game its just the opposite, the textures are good but nothing compared to modern games however.

I finally set up a profile for the game with the following video card settings:

Antialiasing settings 2xQ
Anisotropic filtering - OFF
Image settings - Quality
Color profile n/a
Vertical sync - ON
Force mipmaps - Trilinear
Conformant texture clamp - ON
Extension limit - OFF
Hardware Acceleration - Single display mode
Trilinear optimisation - ON
Anisotropic mip filter optimisation - ON
Anisotropic sample optimisation - ON
Transparency antialiasing - OFF
Triple buffering - ON
Negative LOD bias - CLAMP

After that, I went into the game and enjoyed my 50-70 fps in all areas, even cities. After that however my gpu temp shot up quite a bit, in fact it shot up so high that my vid card started scarring graphics, so after a bit of re-arranging in my case with cables and moving a few hard drives out of the way I was able to up the air flow inside my case, and now im running smooth as a babies bottom. Im also running with a res of 1280x1024x32.

So it was a mixture of not having AA and AF set correctly and also not having very good air flow in my case.

Im running smoothly now with constant 50-70 frame rates, 70 as a high and usually 50 as a low in city areas.
