View Full Version : BoB Name Change?

I know it's a minor issue, and that the current name is still a tentative title, but I'd like to make a point about the current situation.

A flight sim has already come out named Battle of Britain: something something (?), and another just came out named Battle of Britain II: something something. Imagine a FPS game coming out next year called Battlefield by someone other than the BF42 and BF2 developers. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Another reason is that the current game does not really have a good name. IL-2 Sturmovik made sense. As a new release, IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles made less sense. The Ace Expansion pack can be excused specifically because it WAS an expansion pack, but it still required the name of a specific plane from an older title, even though that plane was no longer the focus. Pacific Fighters was a good name for a new game, but many of us don't use it as a standalone product, and are forced to refer to it either as PF+FB+AEP or PF or IL-2 "merged" or something non-specific such as IL-2 series.

Clearly, the current series has outgrown its IL-2 roots with the addition of many new planes, and the Pacific Fighters name rarely applies, since it's often used for more than just Pacific-based battles, so my recommendation is to pick a new name that can accomodate these types of additions in the future.

As I understand it, there will be continued development based on the new BoB engine, and would probably include stuff unrelated to the Battle of Britain, so maybe it's time to start using a new tentative name or commit to a final name that doesn't start with Battle of Britain. There's no reason to remove BoB completely, but make it just a subtitle for the first in the series, not only to avoid confusion, but to give people a good solid name that they can use which is true to the possible broad scope of this new series.

"Maddox Flight" - "Battle Of Britain" or "MFBOB" if you will http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I understand what you are saying and agree, especially if there will be further expansions like with this series.

Well working titles are there to be changed but I do agree when "BoB" would eventually branch out into different theatres it might look a bit odd. Who knows what maddox games comes up with in the end http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I think the release date is still quite far off so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

why not call the series "Aerial Warfare"

the first volume named "Aerial Warfare : Battle Of Britain"

an adon with more westfront/channel stuff of 1941-1943 could be named ""Aerial Warfare : Channel clash"

the MTO game :"Aerial Warfare : Hot Sand"

As a side note:
Not knowing what to call this series makes it hard to do google searches for game related material. Do I search for IL2, IL 2, IL-2, Pacific Fighters, Forgotten Battles ... you get the idea. This will be even worse with such a common phrase as Battle of Britain, and worse still with the shortened BoB (try searching for bob on google).

On another note, I have a hard time telling people about the IL-2 series because its hard to name. I try to be a spokesman for the game, but I think I loose people when I tell them I've been playing IL2 aka Pacific Figters aka Forgotten Battles.

Among the many things that make a good name (in my opinion) are searchability on google and ease of talking about the game with friends.

I actually agree that it should be somewhat generic name, applicable for entire war, since BOB is just the beginning. Then this new line of simulation will cover more and more areas, ETO...etc. As war progresses.

Ok, borrowing from a TV commercial:

"The Spitfire and the Hurricane, in the same thing you've seen them in over and over again....."

But seriously...hmmm...dunno

Though perhaps not catchy enough (in that who except those in flight sims knows Oleg Maddox by name)......That concept really is what should be done if the sim is to evolve as it is claimed will be......An almost common theme with all nations would be ideal...perhaps something with "Eagles" in it? (though I find it corny)

"Where Eagles Dare, Battle of Britain"

or

WED-BoB http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

(peEEEEEEE-UUUuuuuuu http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif)

Naturally if they would follow a timeline somewhat we'd get a real nice evolution of things rather then the "here's 1939-45 bits n pieces".

I like the concept. For example Sid Meier's Pirates was a great title for a ..., well, great title. The thing is that Oleg has awkward surname for that case, or is it cool?
Oleg Maddox's Cliffs of Dover.

Seriously folks... Oleg Maddox`s Battle of Britain sounds good to me. O.M = quality. How about "Oleg Maddox Airwar"?

If they are going to extend way past the Battle of Britain with future upgrades, patches, and releases, they should just call it...

"WWII: Air Combat".

And if they are planning to expand, I hope they keep us Naval Aviation types happy. ETO is just plain 'old hat' now.

Call new game..."ADLER TAG"- The Battle of Britain!!

make expansion called from real wartime names of theatre, "TORCH"- The Invasion of Italy' etc etc and on so and so. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

How about.......

Wings of War: Battle of Britain
Wings of War: Battle of France
Wings of War: Battle for Europe
Wings of War: Mediteranean
Wings of War: Forgotten Battles (this could include many lesser known airbattles in one.. truly forgotten battles.. like Poland etc...)
Wings of War: Pacific
Wings of War: Eastern Front

Put out one say, every nine months or so... (I'd like it every 6 but I am trying to be realistic). If that were every 6 months it would still cover a 4 year period of steady income for 1C and fresh fare for us flight sim junkies. Every 9 months would make it a 6+ year run. The problem with making it too long is tat the engine will get old faster than the IL2 engine did if things continue... personally I think the every 6 month 4 year timeline is better.. it will keep things just fresh enough.... and if 1C works on many of the planes and has a lot of them just waiting... the releases could be like clock work. But can you imagine it though? I mean... we have people saying that the series is incomplete as it is now because some PTO planes are not here (granted... it does need some torp bombers... but the current selection is off the hook IMO.) Imagine if these seperate add ons came from 1C and didnt have all the "stuff" that many think they should... LOL I can see it now.... but I'd buy it if each one only had 6 planes in it. As long as 1C was making it.

Oleg Maddox's Battle of Britain, a simulation by Oleg Maddox, from Oleg Maddox of 1C:Maddox Games.

If I see Oleg's name on the box, I will not buy the sim.

His name is synonymous with bias for Italian planes.

Yep, it needs clear titles like that. Like someone else mentioned, it's pretty tough with the current series to portray our enthusiasm when we stumble about trying to explain the title.

Of course, we may add later:

Episode V: The Empire of the rising sun

Pacific war

Episode VI: Democracies Strike Back

Mediterranean theatre,

then, to remain logical:

Episode I: Rise to power

Hitler becomes "Der F├╝hrer" and you get the spanish war

Episode II: Blitzwars

Blitz wars in Poland, Czechoslovakia, but also Finland

Episode III: Birth of an Empire

Conquest of Benelux and France

And we finish by:

Episode VII: Return of Freedom

Allied offensive from East and West, you'd need a really big map on this one, going from Moscow to London

And we ca even continue:

Episode VIII: A New Age:

Korean War

Episode IX: When Eagles were young

WWI, with all the early planes..

You can make cover pretty much everything before air-air missiles and sophisticated electronics in a warbird simulation engine http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

To borrow from the book, "Duel of Eagles" perhaps?

I do like operation naming system though that was suggested earlier.
