Oleg,

Offline playing is still no fun.
-Even if I set a mission distance to 5km, I have to fly for such a long time. Fly about 15min in an IL-2 and then get shot down by a Bf-109. No fun at all!
-AI can see me in clouds. When I want to hide in a cloud with the IL-2, the Bf-109 just shoots me as if it could see me.
-AI still needs a lot of work...

Just had to say this because I fly missions again and again because of stupid or unrealistic AI behaviour.

I know what you mean Dionysos, but I have plenty of fun in the offline missions, and I'm happy to fly for 60km+ realtime. I fly without any icons at all and spend most of my time getting to know the landscape and navigating.

If you're really bored then there's the autopilot and the time speedup, or if you trimmed and careful, manual controls and the time speedup.

As for 109s, well that's realism for you I'm afraid. That said I'm getting pretty good at hitting the deck at top speed and weaving like a nutter until the 109s out of cannon ammo - after that it's almost harmless on the old IL2 armour.

hey .. speak for yourself.. but after dropping that air to mud garbage on target, i`ve killed more bf109`s in my IL2 then any other aircraft... that thing is a lot deadlier air to air then people realize.. those wing cannons are pretty terrifying /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

I disagree with the first point, but I agree totally on the second. The third is true too. AI needs a lot of work even if that's pretty vague.

I've got two bf109s and a bf110 after 15 or so missions, but I've got a feeling that this isn't too realistic. I suspect the AI is to blame really, a 109 can escape an IL2 no bother.

Off-line's no fun?! Since when? I have great fun in my La-5fn and Bf 109f campaigns, off-line.

ps
there is a time compression feature in IL*2 and FB....it takes me 5 minutes tops to use TC to get to a mission site, and I have not set the max mission length yet. These are short range aircraft, don't forget. A little flight time is a slice of realism...an arcade game has instant nonstop action, a sim simulates the real thing, that's the nature of the beast, sorry.

I used to think flying full missions was a bore (strictly for geeks), but I'm really into it now. It's an exercise in complete paranoia, trying to navigate back to home base after a disasterous mission with my plane shot to bits and no ammo left, knowing there are a couple of bandits still around, desperate to dive to get some speed up in a vain attempt to get home quicker, but aware that I may well need the airspace to bail into if the dodgy sound and puffs of smoke from my engine are anything to go by.

As for the long flights to target, I just try to stay in formation, which I'm just not capable of, constantly overtaking and dropping back, by the time I'm sitting nicely on my leaders wing we're usually there. I don't like really, really long flights, but it's only cause I don't want to fly all that way and then die, which just adds to the experience (even more paranoia, oh yes)

If you just want the action you could try using the quick mission builder. To set up a simple fight on the full mission builder isn't too hard either. There are definately still issues with the AI, it's depressing watching your own side fly into the mountains around Kuban and the Crimea when approaching a runway anywhere near a slope, and their ablity to see through clouds is a pain in the arse (when they are enemies). But at least the AI don't complain as much as the online pilots.

If anybody from marketing or Oleg is listening, please be known that a non-cretin AI + UQMG integrated into FB would be worth the price for an add-on.

I could live with a couple of planes less, and a more capable AI..

I have to say that I agree with the two posts above my own. The realism of the campaigns is excellent, even the AI is crappy. And as maxmars said, an add-on with UQMG and non-cretin AI would be nice, but I'm not sure I'd give up new planes for nicer AI. Maybe, though. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Other than the all seeing AI thing offline is still a lot of fun for me. I just look at the alseeingAI as a challenge. I try to stay out of thier way and i dont use icons offline. The only time I use icons is when flying online with friends who prefer them...I can do without them. I like having to get close to see what I am shooting at. Off line to me is , in some ways just as much if not more fun than online because you dont have the UFO issues associated with lag and such. This sim is great!! The BEST offline play I have ever seen.

I bet you don't play with Luftwaffe much.. Otherwise you'd be seeing another movie.. Nothing wrong with it, only the AI can't fight as effectively when using energy fighters as opposed to nimble aircrafts. After a while it kind of worns out the dogfighting game for you (offline, that is).

The FB sim is certainly remarkable because tries to do so many things, however MiG Alley was much better in terms of dogfighting AI.

I still have it here on my HD: furballs with MiG 15s and F-86s, pilots that correctly used the vertical, sensible wingman management (e.g. more things to say and more things said by the AIs)..
