I have the il-2 1946 steam version of the game. I read that there are two types of campaigns: static, and something else. How do you know which campaign is which? I am interested in playing the campaign that YOU influence by being successful or not. I have tried a campaign and must say it has very very fun moments: some of the missions and the ability to look at your, and other pilots, stats. Hell, on one mission the debriefing message told us we shot down a Russian Ace! Now that kind of feature in a game is hands-down awesome. My flight is greedy as hell though; they are getting kills left and right as I am trying to get a good shot and then mission complete...

Unfortunately, the default dynamic campaign generates Aces for most of your friendlies, so they will be stealing targets out from under you all the time for most of your career.

It is my personal opinion that the sole function of a friendly Ace is to do that and that alone; I've seen too many occasions where the bastages ignore unengaged (and actively threatening) hostiles in order to vulch an enemy aircraft I've worked my backside off to disable, set smoking or even on fire. I'll pull away thinking it's in the bag, and good ol' Number 3 or 5 swoops in, fires a burst and announces "He's going down!" just before my former kill hits the ground or explodes.

I no longer tolerate them; I go into Full Mission Builder, select the campaign I'm in, and 'demote' any friendly Aces down to Veterans or less (usually less--even Veterans can be shameless thieves for some aircraft ai's routines).

I usually make sure my wingman is a Veteran, though. As long as you remember to order him to cover you before the fighting starts, he generally will cover you.

The two types are static and dynamic.

Static campaigns are the kind I make. They follow a specific sequence of missions from start to finish.

Dynamic campaigns use a mission generator to create missions based on how well or poorly your squadron is doing.

There are good and bad points to both types. There are a umber of superb user created campaigns out there; I highly recommend "Castaways" and the sequel "Bush Pigs" by my friend Dubbo.

I usually just play as the German bomber pilot, even though I'm not flying the bomber unless the AI flies really stupid. I like it because I can be a gunner, that's really the only reason I chose the Bomber Pilot campaign.

I have a fighter pilot campaign I've been working on, but for some reason I really like the bomber one.

I jack the difficulty to realism and go from there as the bomber pilot. I do plan to learn how to use the bomb sight and such, but as it is right now, looks to complicated to me just yet.

regarding difficulty aces cheat so much it ruins the game and the rookies and averages are so stupid and predictable..i always set all fighters to Veterans when i make missions.

So, what would you all recommend for the campaign type I am looking for. The type I am looking for would have to be more dynamic where your stats are tracked and you receive medals and what not. Also, I don't want to just fly a bunch of boring predictable missions, either. So if you have a reccomendation please include a linkhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Also, how do yo choose which kind of campaign you want to fly out of dynamic and static?

I usually play on the dynamic missions. Since they are not written by someone who has a life and other things to do, the individual missions and the campaign itself can be long and tedious, which personally, is the way I like it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Although the types of missions are similar, the situation can be vastly different from each time you play. Static campaigns don't have a nice debrief file or roster, but are more exciting and interesting, at least the first time. After that, you know exactly what to expect http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I have not had any problems with kill stealing friendlies though. You can make minor changes to the Dynamic Generator though by adding this to the end of your conf.ini file in the IL-2 root folder :


However, if someday you wish to get into level bombing for a campaign, I suggest you stay away from the DGen. It is geared more for attack or close air support aircraft like the IL-2 or Stuka. It is very frustrating to have to take a TB-3 to bomb a line of cars on some road. Scripted mission usually will have you take out factories and airfields.

So what does adding those lines at the end do exactly?

The last two lines control the overall length of the campaign. If you score 40,000 point the campaign ends. If the computer scores 40,000 points the campaign ends.

The campaign is broken up into a series of operations. When you or the computer scores 3,000 points the operation ends and you move on to the next operation. The points are for the entire side fighting, not just you.

I'm glad people are still playing that campaign. I haven't played any of those missions in years. I hope all the upgrades to the game haven't messed it up.
