Gainward GeForce FX5600 256MB DDR AGP RP DVI VO ULTA/780XP-PRO (145 inc vat) OR Creative GeForce FX5600 256MB DDR AGP DVI VO (144 inc vat)? or something better up to 200?

Sorry about this but you of all people should know...what is the difference in various companies producing what seem to be the same (or very similarly) powered cards? Ive only ever bought Creative before and am dubious of other manufacturers-somebody please enlighten me!!

Can anybody (without getting into a huge debate) suggest anything better for around the above price?

TIA

I can't comment on the geforce cards - but for ati I suggest either Saphire or ATI - this thread is best placed over in the tech forum by the way.

Radeon 9500 pro or 9600 pro

theyre the best cards around 200 Euro / Dollar.

check those benchmarks...

ut2003 (geforce 2-4 vs Radeon)

http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20021218/vgacharts-04.html

or halflife 2 (Fx vs Radeon)

http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030912/half-life-03.html#halflife_2_1024x76832

some pc-magazines and sites say 9600pro aint as fast as the 9500pro but thats bulls.. I had the opportunity to test both from same manufacturer in my pc - the 9500 had 50 more 3d(2001)marks in than 9600pro (standard settings 1024x768) which is nothing.
with antialiasing on, the 9600 is a bit faster.

the 9500 cant bee overclocked until u change its bios (ull loose ur guaranty then and its risky)
the 9600 can be overclocked at the drivers panel, just like an nvidia card. i got 1/3 more power out of it, so the 9500 is much slower.

the fx 5200 & 5600 cards are crap (sorry but its true) a ti4800 is cheaper and nearly as fast. only good fx is the 5900 ultra but its around 480 euro.

also most ati cards are nearly noiseless while the fx...
(with a fx at least u dont need speakers for look on - they sound like a starting jet :-)

if u wanna go ati i would suggest a card from Xelo, theyre currently the fastest radeon 9500pro and 9600pro.

True except the new FX5700Ultra which is at about the same performance level as the ATI9600pro and in some benchmarks it even surpasses it.

Totally false and biased, all current Nvidia FX cards (5200,5600,5700,5900,5950) are nearly noiseless and at about the same level of fan noise as the ATIs. The now defunct FX5800 (a.k.a. the leaveblower) was the only one with the really loud FAN. So you can't base your purchase decision on noise level since that is not an issue anymore.

To the original poster of this thread, don't buy any of the FX5600 cards you mentioned, if you trust Creative so much, wait for their take on the FX5700Ultra, that an the FX5900 series are the only Nvidia FX cards worth buying at the moment.

The FX5700Ultra should retail at around 200 US dollars, so I believe that is within your prize point.

Then again, if it were me, I'd go for an ATI card, either a 9600pro or XT or better yet, a 9700pro.

If you prefer Nvidia do not go below a GF5600Ultra... for ATI///dont go below a 9500Pro...whicxh is actually a better card than the 9600... in bechmarks at least.

im thinking about ordering a Radeon 9600 PRO, because my gf2 (integrated) is outdated. but im afraid my Nforce motherboard will spit the ati card out of the agp slot /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Ati cards work fine on NF2 boards. Just make sure you geta clean install with no residual nvidia drivers left over. There are several threads here and other giuds online that tell you how to get rid of all the remnents of your nvidia drivers.

As to which is better, I don't think that will ever be decided, at least not in this forum(or any for that matter). Too many are blind loyal to what they have. Doesn't matter what anyone says, since they have it, it must be the best, right? So be it a 9600 or 5700, the fact is. they're very close in preformance for the most part. You should be happy with whatever you chose in the $200 dollor price range
