Sorry if this has already been discussed, but I have recently stumbled upon this. There is a lot of talk about NATO not taking this as seriously as the South African Navy did, but I thought it might Interest Celeon as the S.A. boat was a German made type 209-1400. Oh and the surname of the South African skipper was Kretschmer. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

"04 September 2007 06:16
A lone South African submarine left some Nato commanders with red faces on Tuesday as it "sank" all the ships of the Nato Maritime Group engaged in exercises with the South African Navy off the Cape coast.

The S101 -- or the SAS Manthatisi -- not only evaded detection by a joint Nato and South African Navy search party consisting of several ships combing the search area with radar and sonar, it also "sank" all the ships taking part in the fleet.

At several times during the exercise -- which lasted throughout Monday night and Tuesday morning -- a red square lit up the screens where the surface ships thought the submarine was. But it remained elusive."

Ships involved:
The ships were from SNMG1:

USS NORMANDY (CG 60) SNMG1 Flagship (USA)
Ticonderoga Class Guided Missile Cruiser

HNLMS EVERTSEN (F805) (Netherlands)
Zeven Provincien Class Defence and Command Frigate

FGS SPESSART (A1442) (Germany)
Rhone Class Replenishment Tanker

HMCS TORONTO (FFH 333) (Canada)
Halifax Class Multi-role Patrol Frigate

NRP ALVARES CABRAL (F331) (Portugal)
Vasco de Gama Class Frigate

HDMS OLFERT FISCHER (F355) (Denmark)
Niels Juel Class Corvette

Celeon identifies the beer to be a Krombacher Pilsner

Good choice Herr Kaleun http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Local knowledge always favours the home team, and the waters off Cape Point are difficult to master.

But this has happened many times before in this area, and as I say again... as soon as the first torp is fired the 'game is up' for the sub.

Nice pics

South Africa's navy will probably not manage this feat in future as we don't have enough sub-mariners. Our boys are to scared to undergo training and the bulk of those who were sent to Germany for training failed!!
