View Full Version : Forgotten Battles - best forgotten ? performance woes :(

I have dabbled and fiddled with all the custom settings, and I still can't get a decent performance out of FB !

I know my soundcard driver needs updating, so I disabled sound, and then fiddled with the rest, and still freezing and juddering, especially when flying against lots of ground targets. In the SP mission P40 - protect the IL-2's , I dive and shoot the planes on the runway, and I get abot 1 frame every 2 seconds !

Here is my DXdiag , but even on low / very low settings overall still don't give me a smooth framerate and perfomance. I understand that games need to "push the envelope" but something this demanding is a joke ! - I'd love to see a machine running it on the minimum settings !

Any help woud be much appreciated, as I am just about ready to sell this on ! I'd have preferred of OLEG had used exactly the same engine with a bunch of new missions / planes, but this is no fun at all /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Something's seriously wrong with your setup, dude. A machine of your caliber should be getting at least 30-40 fps on Excellent settings. By chance, you're not running with Perfect settings, are you? No machine can do that with a tolerable framerate, yet.

I have a lesser machine and I get a solid 30 fps in campaigns.

Lower sound hardware acceleration to Standard.
Update sound driver. (you know already)

Try Hawgdogs settings for your Ti
http://forums.ubi.com/messages/message_view-topic.asp?name=us_il2sturmovik_ts&id=zxrlm

Assign a key to mirrors in Control and make sure they are off.

Some aircraft are having cockpit issues effecting performance which will be addressed in the first upgrade at the end of April.

Other than the P-40, what missions are you running (single, campaign, QMB) and is the performance poor across the board?
What are your ingame video settings?
What are your il2setup video settings?

well I NEARLY gave up and sold it! but you guys helping is much appreciated !

Yeah its a decent rig, so thats what I thought! Cant understand why performance is so poor ? On other titles, I get much better performance hell I even run raven shield on 1024 x 768 with everything on Medium or above in online mode without a problem. Splinter cell is also pretty demanding, but even that I can get a cracking FPS with 800 *600 with Medium / high settings.

I tried benchmarking with 3dmarkSE, and got a score in excess of 10500, so it aint all that bad, just with this title ( would be the one I want to play the most doh ! )

Hmm I tried to updated the sound card driver from Creative, but the newer update gave me an older driver number ? wtf ? I am concluding that its pretty much up to date. And I still got the problem with the sound disabled.

I'll start working on a list of my settings and experiment a little and report back later.

Thanks

Steve_V, thanks for the link - those settings COULD make a big difference, I can tell just by looking that there are a lot of things I have set differently!

Are there any other drivers I should be updating other than vid card / s card / Direct X - does the MOBO have drivers as well ?

oh, and btw - how do I measure my FPS in game ?

thanks again /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hi

For measuring your fps you can use fraps program (www.fraps.com (http://www.fraps.com)) i prefer to use the fps meter included in the Il2 core because i don't want to mess things up with another program running on the background. The procedure is this:

1.While flying press SHIFT+TAB

2.You'll see a screnn full of text just type the following sentence (exactly as it is !)

fps START SHOW

3.Press ENTER

4.Press SHIFT+TAB

Try to benchmark your system with the "black death " track, i had 10 average fps when i installed the game. Now with some tweaks and a lot of patience i got 25 average fps.

Try this settings

Res 1024x768x16
DirectX
All Details set to medium except objects details and lightning (set to high)

Video card settings:

Vertical syncro: Off
Antialiasing: Quincunx
Anysothropy: Off

As you'll see my rig isn't a benchmark crusher but i still get 35 fps in offline game (i don't have a broadband internet connection..!) so this should help you

My Specs:

Athlon Xp2000+
Asus Mobo A7V8X
ONLY 256 Mb DDR ram (333 Mhz)
Geforce 4 MX 440 8x (This is a bottleneck....i know !)

Good flight to you !

Hey thanks Jagaetev,

that is EXTREMELY useful information /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

without the FPS showing, I couldn't tell if my changes were making things worse or not /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hmm... looks like a night spent in "tweaking"

Cheers

I have what might be considered a mediocre rig by todays standards but my sound is working well and also I'm getting a solid 35fps plus on large maps (maps not intended for online play). This is true also when playing online in servers that have up to 25 players at one time. On small online maps I am getting well into the 50fps plus range.

I also dabbled quite a bit with the settings while using the same map, aircraft, spawnpoint, etc. and making changes to the configuration settings. You need a constant reference point to make comparisons.

My system specs are: Athlon 1.2ghz, Asus A7v mainboard, 768mb pc133 sd ram, GF4 Ti 4200 128mb ddr vid card, Soundblaster Live sound card and 5.1 speakers, 40gb western digital 7200 rpm harddrive. I have not overclocked anything on my system.

The biggest boost in framerate was quite simply using OpenGL in lieu of DirectX. This about doubled my framerate. Also since I am using a Geforce4 TI 4200 I played with the performance settings for the card itself. I found the default settings seemed to work the best in my case. Also in the game config I did not select the GF3/4 settings. Instead I used the simple default selection. This is what I ended up using for the sound as well, default settings.

Further fine tuning was done ingame using the ingame configuration while hitting esc and selecting sound, video, etc. I am not able to select the highest settings but settled for a mixed bag. I found the settings that made the most impact were the lighting levels for ground and objects and the ground detail level. I settled for medium lighting all around and very low ground detail. This enabled me to keep the aircraft detail high. I also was able to keep the view distance high. These seemed important for dogfighting etc. I am running at 1152 x 864 16bit resolution which is my desktop resolution as well.

One more thing I did was to enter my bios setup at bootup and change the AGP Mapped System Memory to 8mb, its lowest possible setting. This was suggested in a forum for a different game and seemed to make an improvement here as well.

Hope maybe some of my experimentation pays off for you as well. Don't give up on this game because it is quite simply the best darn flight sim to date.

Your truly,
II/KG-1_Becker (I like flying the He-111 the most)

Amendment to my previous response....

I checked my sound settings and I had selected the "safe directx settings - windows 2000". I also enabled the "sound extensions" ingame and seemed to run ok. This can also be done under "custom" in the configuration. Of course this was all done to speed up the game. When I build my new PC this spring I hope I can bump the settings up a bithttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You might want to verify that your windows settings themselves are not the cause of your slowdown. Make sure no programs are running in the background while you are running or about to run the game by bringing up the task manager. This is done by hitting ctrl+alt+del while at your desktop. All those nice little pop-up programs and others that start when windows starts may need to be disabled prior to running the game. They will rob your game of resources. You should only see explorer running and nothing else for a clean startup. I try not to allow programs to start up with windows for this reason. Saves me from checking.

I also set my windows performance from "allowing windows to choose what's best" settings to "best program performance" setting. Also the page files setting is "determined by system".

Hope some of this information helps you.

Again best regards,

II/KG-1_Becker

Hi again Sasquatch (great name !)

I forgot a "small" modification to the conf.ini file. You must add the following setences at the end (caution write them exactly as stated).

AirIntensity=Low
GroundIntensity=Low

Both options will lessen your CPU workload eliminating Random air patrols that aren't directly involved in your mision's objectives (there's no point in tracking a plane that's 100 miles away from you).

The same is done with ground objects.

Try searching the forum with Ground Intensity or something because i don't remember the exacts details on how this works, but there's a readme file in one of the Cd (i'm at work so i don't remember in wich one to find it;-o) that will certainly help you !

Good and a better flight to you !

I am lost for words........../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

spent about the first hour just flying around playing with the views even before I started considering doing anything else /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

can't thank you guys enough !!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to make most of the tweaks listed, but I can now run in 800 * 600 32 bit with most settings on Medium or above !!

FPS on-line with all backround programs running is variable from 45-70 FPS even on largeish maps. ( all I got to do now is work out how to shoot someone down /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif )

For most SP missions I am now getting a repectable 35-40 FPS pretty much constantly, except for two exceptions:

1) Live ground targets i.e. not buldings - if there are lots of targets and I shoot and there are a lot of particles such as smoke etc, I am down to about 15 fps.

2) The P40 cockpit still makes my machine chug a little both on and offline, and I see a noticeable drop in FPS ?
I heard that cockpit effects will be amendsd in a forthcoming patch ?

For campaign missions, I seem to get slightly higher FPS ~ 45 average, but that just may be chance as I obviously havent played 'em all yet

Black Death track gives me aminimum of about 15 fps, and a high of about 40 fps based on 800 * 600 * 32 al settings on medium.

There is probably a little more tweaking to be done, but honestly speaking at this stage it is VERY playable, and that is ALL that matters

....... now off to lose myself in a piece of sotware for a couple of months ......... he he /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Thanks again

Hey,

I also saw hunters post regarding vid cards being optimised for higher resolutions - should I be targeting my tune up at 1024 * 768 of somthing ?

Cheers

Hi Big S

Glad to hear your're loosing sleep hours in the cockpit, isn't that great...going to work with yours eyes, hands and nerves tired afters hours of intense dogfight !!

But as you know...greed is a bad thing but also a basic need of every fighter pilot....lol...we always want more ammo, more fuel, more ennemies and more than 24 hours in a day to take them all down to smoking tiny little pieces..he he...

I think you can go up in your res to 1024x768x 16, avoid 32 bit color depth, i guarantee you won't notice the difference in colors and you'll have a higher fps.

Good flight to you !

1024x768 32bit high refresh rate
Your card will not perform well at 16 bit.

If your desktop resolution is different than gaming resolution, you'll be back at the 60Hz default refresh rate in FB. You can keep desktop\gaming resolution the same or use Refresh Force to set your gaming refesh rate if using different resolutions.

i've done the fps START SHOW ENTER thing and it's been very helpful. But it's on evertime I fly. How do I turn it off?

the command is :

fps START SHOW ......... to begin

fps STOP ......... to end

I guessed a couple of times and this worked /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

J , I am now on 1024 * 768 * 16 and getting an average of around 42 fps. ( I also used Speed disk to improve loading, and msconfig to disable startup items )

I re-installed the new nVidia drivers, and there is still a noticeable reduction with the P40 cockpit. Also the FPs drop can still be as low as 4 fps on the "defend the Sturmoviks" mission when I really start shooting all the planes on the ground and the particles get going, that really is the only unplayable part, and I think its just because there are about 12 planes on ground and 4 in air , and with everything blowing up in close up its just overloading the system.

I notice also that my HD is accessing during the P40 slow down bits - I guess this is use of the page file in place of ram right ?

I have 512 meg DDR 2100 Ram , and only 2 slots in the machine - can I use different size ram - i.e. could I put a 512 in one slot and a 256 in the other as long as they are the same type i.e. 2100 ? Does XP Home handle more than 512 meg - I saw something about cacheman , and that earlier OS's don't handle it very well ?

Is there any resource which explains what each of the nvidia options actually do ? I know somethings like vertical sync and anti alaising, however, I'd like to learn more about the other options.

Heres hoping that any patch will help a little /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Ok. Now i've tried many different solutions to increase performance og FB and this is best what i've found.
I have asus a7a mobo
geforce2pro64 overclocked 250/500
512ddr
SBLive-hardware acceleration disabled
43.45 detonator
800x600-32bit opengl stencilbuffer off(Earlier I got it also on but now I cannot get it to stay on,any suggestions??Could it be rivatuner settings??)

Visibility-med
Objects-med
Detail-normal
Landscape-med
land det-med
clouds-med

I used tuning the black death track and fraps
I start fraps at 10 sec and stop 1.00 min at track
Utilities:rivatuner and cacheman
I got average fps 33.332 what means that now I can even play gulf of finland missions with decent fps.
Smaller maps I have fps 30-60.
Game looks quite ok now, and what's most important it runs steady and smooth enough to hit someone.
Yeah, and thanks to hawgdog,His article here earlier helped a lot too.
Old il2 runs with exellent settings at least 40-50 fps

Does someone know exactly what that stencilbuffer is??

stencil buffer is used to create shadows etc in a 3d environment, with out it they look less realistic but may/should provide a performance increase

You might also want to make sure there is nothing running in the background and defrag your HD. A bit more ram wont hurt either...good to see you enjoying things now. I tried perfect settings and i still got a slide show..I had fortgotten how frustrating that can be so I went back to excellent. LOL...you said you spent asbout an hour just flying around.... I still do that ../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
