View Full Version : Sorta OT: Tank equivalent of FB/PF?

Does such an animal exist? I'm looking for a realistic WW2 era tank sim, something that fills the role that FB+AEP+PF does for air combat or Silent Hunter 3 does for uboat combat. The only way I've been getting my tank-simming ya-yas over the last couple years has been WW2Online, but I was hoping for an offline-capable game with a full compliment of WW2 era tanks with campaigns (not just 39-41 equipment).

Thanks in advance for any recommendations,

doing some digging around...All the stuff I'm seeing for WW2 era tank stuff is either very arcade-ish (Panzer Elite Action) or is an RTS (Panzer General). The only title I've seen that looks like it somewhat fits the bill is the original Panzer Elite, but that was released 5 or so years ago. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

See if you can try "Operation Flashpoint: Cold war Crisis" and its expansion pack "Resistance"

I have it since 2001... I know pretty old, BUT

there's tons of mods of not just ww2 but almost any era i.e: (Napoleonic wars, Vietnam, OldWest, WWI, WW2, CW, Modern day, heck even Zombies & Vampires)

Infantry: good simulation (command squads) ***VERY IMMERSIVE
Tank: Good simulation http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif
Helicopter: not very realistic, arcadish controls
Aircraft: realistic? HELL NO! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

But point is, the ability to explore dozens of custom made Islands beign able to do what you want. create missions easily by yourself, all that combined makes a superb game.

Yep Waffen, I've been pimping Ofp since the day it came out, in fact I tried to convince the shop to sell it me the day before it came out http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The great thing about Ofp (Resistance expansion is a must), is that you can design your own set-piece battles in the mission editor very easily and also the community addons are easy to edit, in fact just this weekend I made myself some British Shermans out of some existing US Shermans.

You can take up three positions in a tank - commander, gunner or driver and also command a troop of four tanks, while being able to switch between 1st and 3rd person views, and also of course being able to dismount the vehicles and play it 1st person shooter style.

The only drawback with the community addons is that they rarely have matching, realistic, armour values. But as I've already said with the right tools, units are very easy to edit.

Well, pimpin aint easy but heres some more:

I have to agree with you chaps. OFP is the closest thing to a proper WWII tank sim out there.

I would recommend this mod: Finnish Defence Forces 1.4 http://koti.mbnet.fi/~fdfmod/index.html

The installation couldn't be easier:
1- Install OFP Resistance
2- Patch to 1.96 (just 1 patch)
3- Instal the FDF mod

The landscape is amazing, full of vegetation and objects to hide your tank, and unlike other so called 'proper' tank sims, you will have actual infantry all around you.

There are unfortunately very few tank sims out there. The only real (commercial anyway) sim i know of is Steel Beasts. This is a pretty **** good sim, very realistic. But it's modern tanks. And it's quite outdated in the graphics department, they will release a new version soon, but it will be quite expensive (125 bucks, the tank sim marked segment is very small). If you want to try a real tanksim then go for Steel Beasts http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Steel Beast ProPE will be released soon ($125), but Steel Beasts2 will be late 2006-2007 (normal retail price).

Believe me - Steel Beasts is the only sim I've played that had me literally sweating and exhausted at the end of an intense 45 minute battle.

Even the original - if you can get past the graphics is very immersive.

I hear ya guys!

these are regular sites for me to visit almost every week:

http://ofp.gamezone.cz/index.php?newlang=eng
http://www.ofpec.com/

and of course this forum http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The Finish Defence Mod and Liberation '45 are a must!

Come to think of it, FB+AEP+PF and OFP:CW|RES are the oldest yet the coolest games that sit on my PC http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif [not taking into account the gazillions of console emulated games NES SNES, etc. and Legacy DOS sims: F-19SF KOS Stunts, etc.]

In fact, those 2 have set very high standards, dictating what is to be develop.

OFP some highlights:

Put yer face on a soldier http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Download the coolest mod is out there, unpack it, and modify it yourself (just like snafu73 did).
Make awesome missions with just drag and drop and a few clicks away, of course if you know Turbo C++ you will be able to make even more complex missions (scripted missions).
Drive anything from a bycicle to a Panzer or a M1 Abrams.
Several armies of the world (and insurgents 2)use variations of its engine to train soldiers
Make a mission with two units wearing the faces of Sadamm and Osama and...well you know the rest

And even now there are people still making mods for this game

oh and if you guys liked to mess around with FB+PF's patches you'll going to love OFP http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hey Fordfan

Like I said tis pretty old (the exp pack was released in 2003)

I will look into it and see if there's a download version like Direct2Drive or something.

Good thing is that if we find it it will be real cheap http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'm willing to give OpF a shot. Did some searching, and can't find it available for Buy&Download anywhere. However, I did find this...

http://www.codemasters.com/eshop/more-details.php?eshopitemid=511

$10 bucks plus shipping if you join the silly little codemasters club. They also have a playable demo available there somewhere.

T-72 Balkans on Fire is pretty good considering.

Although the setting is current-day, it still allows you to man the T-34 and take shots at Shermans. The Leopard is in there and it can stand in for Panthers and Tigers.

T72 Bof is an arcade game imo, not realistic at all. It's a semi sim, but it just feels more like a game than a sim.

What is needed is a modern version of SSI's Panzer Commander...its old, but i still play it sometimes, very well done, EXCEPT THE LOUSY BRAKES dont work at all. Not good for gunnery.

It had east and west fronts, and north africa, with a bewildering variety of well rendered (for the time) American, Soviet, German, and British tanks, wiht some french stuff thrown in for targets. you could easily adapt the AI tank destroyers and assault guns to. could do all the stations, and it had a great misn blder where you could make your own terrain, and the cmpns were very extensive and there were several of them.

A tank sim must have a large variety of tanks and other vehicles that are player operated...no FMs, lots simpler to do. Id buy it.....but the blasted brakes gotta work. Im surprised nobody has done one in about 7 yrs.

Didnt SSI become Ubi-soft, or get absorbed by them?

My digging yesterday told me that the two most promising tank sims on the horizon are Panzer Fist and an as-yet-unnamed one. Both of these were mentioned earlier in the thread by others, but I wanted to post some links for those interested in keeping up.

Panzer Fist ( http://www.panzerfist.com/ ) appears to have a dev crew, but no publisher backing them. It seems they began sometime in late 2004 or early 2005, and then had to go on hiatus in mid 2005 because of financial concerns. However, it appears that just in the last couple weeks, they have started back up again.

The other, unnamed one is a little bit odd. Someone has been posting at the SimHQ forums "on behalf of the developers" with screenshots to solicit community feedback. He won't really answer any detailed questions about who is making the game, what its called, when its released, or really anything else. For those interested in keeping track, you can find it at http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/boards/bbs/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum;f=11 in the thread named "New WW2 Tank-Sim on the Horizon! First 3D Model Shots..."

What about this game?
http://int.games.1c.ru/ww2/
http://games.1c.ru/ww2rts/?type=gallery

I don`t know if this one qualifies as a "tank sim", but I`m really looking forward to playing the finished product.
