View Full Version : 8800GTS 640Mb to 8800GTX "Upgrade"?(My experiences)

Well Im glad I play other games than IL2 because I was shocked to see my fps DROP by 2 or 3 in Black Death track (identical settings )in going from a heavily overclocked 650/1100 8800GTS 640(using Rivatuner)to an 8800GTX.
As has been said here many times before this game is heavily cpu dependent ....
Not all doom and gloom however COD4 and Medieval Total War 2 look great at resolutions and settings I could have only dreamed of previously....
But for IL2 exclusive gaming fans the story is definitely put the money into cpu and motherboard ...

I have an 8800GTS 320 and it runs sweet MTW2 and stalker sweetly. Neither do ihave any problems with IL2, except for very slight stutter on Berlin when I zoom into dense cities. It`s useful to have more than one program to test a new card or cpu`s ability on.

But isn`t an 8800GTX a drop down from the 8800GTs?

The GTX was the top of the line Nvidea card, but the new GT's and GTS's cards with (I think)the G92 cores are almost as fast. We are still waiting for the next Nvidia high end cards, some with the G92 core, one of which will be the 9800 X2.

Not really much difference there. I doubt the two would make any real difference btween eachother in any game.

G92 8800GT is almost as fast as a GTX.
An G92 core 8800GTS 512mb even comes close to the 8800Ultra wich is Nvidia's top model.

Both cards outperform the Ultra with some games easly with resolutions up to 1600x1200 and in some newer DX10 games even up to 1900x1200.

On some games the difrence betwen the GTS 512 and the GT is less than 0.5 Fps wich is really not worth the 100 Dollars/Euros extra IMO.

Weird thing is with AA (AntiAliasing) on the 8800GTS 512 looses a lot more Fps than the 8800GT does so if you use AA (AntiAliasing)the 8800GT is the better card.

Concidering that and the fact that the 8800GTS 512mb takes up 2 slots of space (so if you got a PCI slot right next to the PCIe slot you cant use that) i would grab a 8800GT for 200 dollars/euros, infact, i bought 2 of them http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

My Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Dual Core 3.2Ghz.
nForce 590 SLI MoBo.
4x 1024mb DDR2-800 in 2x Dual Channel.
Soundblaster X-Fi ExtremeGamer.
2x GeForce 8800GT 512mb in SLI.
Windows Vista Premium 64bit.

IL-2 1946 looks and runs amazing on that and cant wait till Patch 4.09 comes out.
Right now im having a blast with Crysis but still IL-2 remains my all time favorit game.

Finaly here is a link with all the specs for all the curent 8 series (G80 & G92) cards.

Basicly the 8800GT and 8800GTS 512 are 9 series (G92) but got renamed about a month before release because they planed to bring out a G96 core based 9800GT, but the proto gave problems and it got canceled or seriously delayed since the next G92 cards sudenly do have the 9800 name.
IMO they canceled it and are focusing on the new G100 chip wich should hit the market just before Christmas 2008.
