View Full Version : Hello - New Player Questions

Hello I recently got this game and installed GWX gold right away, should i play the game without the GWX mod first ?

Also, I went through the training and did the first misson that has you sink some stationary ships ,which was fun even though it lowered my score, and now I'm up to patrol 4 and I rarely find any enemies to fight. I just patrol the area I'm told to go to and nothing really happens.
I like the game but cruising for 30 mins. to an hour just to patrol and not fight gets old quick. Whats the best way to find enemy ships ? Should I fight/destroy the ships along the way to the patrol route?
Any tips to get into the action would be appreciated. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hello and welcome aboard http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes you should play the game with GWX first. At least for a short time.

This way you see and understand all the fine improvements that come along with GWX much better.

Its fully up to you to attack ships on the way to your patrol area. In reality, such opportunities were not left unused of course. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Not finding any ships can be frustrating but thats how it was most of the time.

Try to make use of the convoy route informations on the map that came with the SH-III or try to look for coastal merchant routes surrounding Great Britain's coastlines.

Celeon is a seasoned vet & inspiration to me. His thoughts are right on the money...always! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif

Here's my 2 cents...please don't let it deter you from really enjoying this simulation. I love it!

This is a simulation of what it was like to be the commander of a WWII u-boat. What I learned quite quickly, & I think you have as well, is that you won't find targets to sink every 30 minutes of play. You're sailing in a vast ocean with the knowledge of merchant & convoy routes as depicted on the map. Sometimes even when you cover one of those routes you may not come across targets for a while...if ever. You have to be in the right place at the right time. I have never come across anything to sink in any of my given initial patrol areas. I have also spent many, MANY hours sailing around only to have to save the patrol for another day.

I, as well as other members here have found that AM51 is a good choice for patrol, (for me the extreme southeast corner is the place to be...sometimes). Try it but don't be disappointed if nothing seems to come your way. Patrol in a north-south fashion as near to the ports of your choice as you dare. Something will come your way. When it does you'll be hooked...guaranteed! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

When I first got the game I played it until I got sick of the same old damage and sinking model. It felt as if it needed to be more realistic. GWX added the challenge and other more realistic options that make the game more enjoyable. If you know anything at all about real life U-boat operations you'll know that most of the time it was tedious and boring. Sure, there are lots of ships but the ocean is also very large. If you encounter ships all the time it will soon turn into an arcade game. I've been at sea for weeks with nothing sighted, only to then get run over by two or three convoys in the same area at once. The game is never the same each time and that's what keeps me coming back for more.

I would recommend playing a few career patrols with the stock game before moving on to GWX, but either way you'll have fun.

Oooops. Typo there.

Actually i wanted to say WITHOUT GWX first. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

yeah I saw that cel, I knew what you meant http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I appreciate the quick responses and advice. I do enjoy the game quite a bit. I guess I just need to change my view of the game. I was kind of expecting it to be more scripted with encounters getting more and more intense as each new patrol was taken, at least when going through the career. I realize its a simulation but its still a game and so I approched it that way when I started. I will continue the hunt because Im sure when I do come across a patrol or convoy its will be quite rewarding. I noticed I get quite a few messages while on my patrol are these indicators of activity that I should investigate ?

If I'm following you correctly the messages that you're referring to are for immersion purposes. They're trying to simulate messages that a real u-boat might have received during patrol. Typically there's nothing to follow up on. If I haven't followed you correctly someone will jump in here & help.

You will know when a target is approaching. In GWX your hydrophone operator will announce it...maybe!?! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif A small slash will appear on the Navigation Map. Read what he tells you carefully. If it's something like "Ship closing - medium range - slow speed" you've most likely got something.

@ WhiteWolf1,

Althought it's been over two years since I've played the game, if memory serves there is good hunting to be found 100-150 miles to the west of Gibraltar; SW Ireland and NW Ireland (Rockall Bank). Don't worry too much about reaching or patrolling your allocated grid square - the crew will cover for you! Never let any valid passing target get away. This is a simulation and not an arcade game. It rewards patience (or tries it!).

Hello WhiteVVolf1
I have been playing silent hunters from day one, SH3 with GWX is the best there is, I now there is a sh5 but its no more then a kids game.it looks better but thats it.
if you put yourself into the 1940s and maybe watch the movie Das Boot, it will help put you in there.good hunting.

I will also recommend playing game without the GWX mod for a while, you will definitely appreciate the improvements. The learning curve will also be more gentler.

As for your lack of action, that just makes it more realistic simulation. I went for 5 patrols without seeing a legitimate target, in pursuit of some tense action I carried out a raid on Blyth harbour. Note this was late 1939 in a small coastal sub so could deal with shallow water better. I assume later on it wont be as successful.

Welcome Herr Kalun. The areas that you are assigned are normaly dead spots. As mentinoned(spelling) AM51 is a good area because its a major choke point for convoys and lone merchants. Also the area of ocean around the rackall backs are the same (AF or AM17 is teh gridsquare) and BF13 in the southern approaches are all realy good spots to patrol.
