View Full Version : Convergence: Never too close

I've always read that you ought to set the convergence right for MG equipped planes to make a kill (notably in the early Hurricane and the Mustang). I've even myself advised novices to set convergence to 150 to 200 meter or so.

This evening I saw an old gun film. The planes can't have been more than 50 meter (150 ft.) apart. So I rest convergence to 70/110 on a Hurricane and played a few of Extreme Ones missions from the BoB-campaign.

All I can say is wow! I've always been a mediocre shot at best; I never got any high kill rate in any of the campaign I have played. Now, on the other hand, 109s started spurting flames from a quick burst, Ju88s hitting the dirt without too much persuasion, and even Heinkels seem to take notice of my firing! Oh, the wonders of convergence. I€m quite sure I could go lover and get even better results, even 50/70, but that would make the long shots sometimes necessary in slow planes impossible.

Now, if only we had a system of setting gradual convergence as they did back then...

100 is minium, and its fine for when u can get in close, but otherwise its not so great...

100m for cannon/12.7mm
500m nose machine gun

Personally I set several convergences depending on plane.

A standard setting for most would be 250-300m.
The reason is that it gives an ok hitpattern at 600m aswell wich is the upper limit to fire mg's IMO.

If we take the hurricane for example I set it to 250 because my most common adversary is the 109 and to get close to any 109 is very unlikely, unless very lucky or in a furball.
If the 109 is aware of the hurricane there is little chance to get closer than 300m (live oponents) speed difference is too great and the 109 can fly out of firing range in a few seconds in level flight.

100m in my opinion gives to few shooting opportunities unless u are faster than your opponent and can catch him in level flight.

Well, my opinion. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Depends on the style of the fighter as well.

If I am flying boom and zoom I generally set my convergence further out. As I am closing wih a large speed advantage, I dont have too much time to fire. So I set convergence about 225 m and fire a burst from about 275 - 125 meters. Any closer and I usually have to use the fire from only one wing.

For turn fighters I usually have much closer convergence, about 175m-150m. More time on target, usually closer shots and often higher angles of deflection.

With the Hurricane, you can't really boom and zoom with the 109's. Turning and burning tends to be the game of the day. Against 111s I would considder convergence further out, but against fighters 70/110 seems about perfect, perhaps even 65/100 or 65/90. I don't shoot before the 109's wings spans the ritcle.

u cant set the convergance to less than 100metres can u?

100metre convergance will limit your effective firing range to 200metres, well with wing guns, stuff like 190s inner cannon, not so bad..

Then again, I'll just have to hold my fire until the little bugger is withing 150 meters, just as all the old wartime pilots advices...

Personally I'm against setting convergence based on some old manual or desire to strike at long ranges.....At too far a range you're moving too much to make most count....Frankly IMLTHO if you're setting over 300meters...just ste it instead to 10,000 or whatever the maximum is......

I myself am at 140mg/155cannon....HOWEVER that does not mean it's good for you.

Run a series of QMB against fighters disregarding icons and simply fire when it feels right.....Don't worry about convergence settings or how well you're hitting at this point....Just shoot when it feels good.....Make ntrk's.

Then review the ntrk's, what range are you most often shooting at paying attention to the icons....Set your convergence for that with maybe a plus of 0-25m......and expect to have to change this as you evolve. In kind, try it with bombers, and remember how to adjust based on what you're attacking.

Now, your range will be set for when "you shoot instinctively"....not at someone elses ideal.

Good idea!

Well, I never use icons. I am an "immersonist" in that reguard. I have tried with icons though, and have found i tend to shoot at 30 to 100 meters.

My convergence really varies per plane i fly..

I use kinda a standard setting for the us .50cal equipped fighters: 275M MG and Cannon and i get fairly good results with them.

When i fly my Fw190a5 i set it all to 400M, works absolutely great. On my P-39 i set Cannon to 100 and MG's to 275 again.. It just depends all on what i fly and approx where it's guns are located.
With noseguns like in the LA5 for example i set them much further as the guns are close next to eachother and with wingmounted guns i want to create a real angle http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Like Lebillfish said, set it to whatever YOU feel is fine.
I'm gonna try the Hurricane though with a close range..I have the feeling that it shreds even harder then. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yup, mine says 140mg http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

It all depends how you fly really, I do a LOT of long range/Hi deflection shots and if I set it too close then the bullets cross over too much and spread out....

I find as soon as I get up to 300 metres and closere the pilot starts jinking like mad and its easy to loose him, therefore I shoot from further away when hes still flying straight and level.

I like mine at 200-250.

I tried the closer convergence with the Mustang and have noticed a big difference. I've been able to clip some wings quite often.

Is there a possibility that people are overlooking convergences and expecting the 50s alone to do the work?

10-10-2005, 08:09 PM
well closer might solve that sync issue with 50's huh?

10-10-2005, 09:23 PM
nah, ull still have the same problem, u might just hit harder when u do.

lower convergance is probably better, but 200-500 is better in the multi roll and u have a decent chance of hittin a target at longer range.

i use 350 for when i expect todo ground attack

i guess u wanna go with the smallest u can get away with
