Now the smoke is just black, as the fuel/oil burns. But I often read in the pilots memoirs about thick white glycol smoke pouring from the damaged plane...

I had read some stories that pilot report seeing green-colored streaming from damaged water cooled engined plane. I don't know what exact color they used in 1940-1945 unless someone make up stories about green color what we used in our automobile now.

Depends on the coolant the aircraft used.
