So i ordered IL2 forgotton battles and pacific fighters the other day due to many recommendations from people over at the Silent Hunter 3 forum for a good combat sim. I'm a relative newbie to simming and love it.

Anyone got any cool screenshots, pics or vids for me while the agonising wait for the games to arrive? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

There's a sticky thread for screenshots on the top of the page (lowest ones of the stickiest). Its 225 pages long, so there's plenty to look at. Here's one made by Low_Flyer (nice chap on the forum)

they are some nice pictures, are those from pacific fighters above. Also what is your favourite in the IL2 series?

I read at gamespot that pacific fighters is the low point in the series, is this true? The user reviews seem to disagree.

I'll tke a look at that stickie with the pictures, looks like a bit of a tome http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Thats a nice shot of landing on the carrier, and good work flying through the hanger on that Spitfire, bet that took some doing http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Well, it depends on your perspective. It does add loads of content to the game when merged with forgotten battles and the aces expoansion pack, but it lacks certain planes, objects (like some ships) and maps for the "complete" PTO experience if that is your fave theatre. Still IL2 though, so plenty of fun to be had there.

My system is less than ideal to run this game, so my graphics are less than perfect but here are some screenies anyway!

I don't have any pics with me here, but my favourite in the series was Forgotten Battles, the first one. That was the most interesting, I think. I loved Il-2 and FB because their subject matter (the Eastern Front, Finland, and Hungary) had been completely neglected, and exploring these theatres was fascinating.

AEP and PF were, for the most part, Western aircraft and theatres (if you imagine that Japan is Far Far West instead of Far East... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ). They did it better than anyone else has ever done it (IMHO) but (IMHO) it wasn't as polished as Il-2 and FB and the subject matter was less interesting (IMHO).

(Yes, taking off and landing on carriers is fun, but flying for hours over water isn't, and flying about in aircraft that have to carry a ton of naval equipment is less fun than flying landplanes. IMHO.)

Edit: Marc_Hawkins, are you a glider instructor-pilot in the UK perchance?

The game looks great, can't wait to boot it up, will have to wait till after the weekend though for it to be delivered. Royal Mail just isn't as good as it used to be http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

I love the look of the clouds and sky at dusk, sunsets etc.

Question: does the game model day and nights, with the sun moving through the sky with the passage of time?

Also to jds1978: what is that ship in the middle picture that looks as if it has just been bombed by you http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif

Philipscdrw

Yep! Day and night is modelled, you can set the mission to start at any time day or night. (But flying at night is hard, none of the aircraft are really designed (in real life) for night flying except perhaps the large bombers.) I'm 98% sure that the sun moves with time. And you get mist in the mornings with certain weather conditions...

You did not mention it in your first post but you will need the Ace Expansion Pack(AEP,not the Aces Campaign)to add to Forgotten Battles before you can merge Pacific Fighters.Pacific Fighters can be installed as a standalone game in its own right. However to get all the planes, maps, updates, you will need the merged version.

IMHO if you really want to know what this hype is all about, I recommend getting Teamspeak2 and listen a bit to WarClouds TS-Server:

Better you choose allied side, though http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

No thats a campaign&skin pack that is 3rd party in origin. RCsimulations still sell "Aces Expansion Pack" see the IL2 section in the "other flight sims" page. The link below takes you to their main page. Either that or E-bay might have some, AEP is quite a rarity in the mainstream sellers site nowadays.

They're releasing a platinum pack soon that will include all necessary games and patches in one set. Not sure when though.
