Fill me in on the mechinics of the various boosts. I have a genral understanding of how automobile nitrous oxide systems work, but I know nothing of MW 50 and 'water injection' (on the p47)

Someone fill us all in. I know someone was speaking of the need to run mw50 on the 109 past 100% throttle. I would like to learn more.

Methanol-Water mixture I think

Water INjection was just to aid in cooling... the P47 was mainly air cooled

I'm hoping for more information then just the answers to the abbreviations.

Hi Saber

MW50 is a mixture of 50/50 Methanol/Water as you surely know already. Both elements cooling down the fuel/air mixture to reduce that mixture volumina during the precompression process. That results in higher manifold pressure due the more and better filling of the cylinder. Water has that effect to keep the burning chamber cooler for better and proper ignition of the fuel/air. Emthanol is a sort of alcohol and has 2 effects. 1st avoiding of freeze in the air intake area, 2nd; alcohol reduce the igintion temepratur of the fuel/air mix. Both affect in a cooler temperatur the engine is running and higher manifold pressure for higher performance. It's possible increase the engine power up to 50% of the nominal performance while using MW50.

Water inbejction and MW50 is the same thing, just different (US and German) names for it.

It means injecting water (mixed with an alcohol to prevent freezing) into the supercharger eye from a small tank inside the plane. It cools down outside air, enables for more power, and, at the same time, keeps the engine cooler.
