View Full Version : Request for ground based observation units

Dear Oleg and development team,

In order to simulate air war better, I thought it would be nice to have an additional feature in the game: occasional info from the ground about the position of enemy planes (of course only if they already crossed the frontline).

If I am not mistaken, even if radar was not that common in the Eastern front, flying commanders received info on enemy trough observation posts placed on the ground or even ground units.

I think it would be a cool and very useful feature if (similarly to cameras, or other objects) certain "obseravtion objects" (like a special jeep or truck) could be placed on the map, which if enemy planes are in a certain distance could send messages, which then would go trough the pilots like in game messages, just as we now can hear the airfiled.

These messages can be very sproradic, and dont need to be entirely accurate or complete. What I mean is messages like:
"enemy bombers sighted over xxxx, heading xxx"
"ground units at xxx are under bomber attack"

Location could include either town name, map coordinates, or just simply the ID of the observation unit (which then could be found on the map)

I dont know if this would require lot of work, but I think would give a huge increase in the simulation of realism.

Of course one could turn on the minimap feature with the plane icons, but that is far too unrealist. (and online wars dont use them, for good reason)

Thx, Polikov

no one seems to be interested in this, but I bump it.

I really think it would be cool, would give a new dimension to the game.

I am happy you like the idea.

The main reason I was thinking on this is that it would come very handy in online wars such as Forgotten War or even VEF. At the momnet missions has to be created in a way that opposing forces "meet" somewhere, otherwise they would just fly along with no contact (thx good, we have large enough maps).

This assumes that prior to mission, commanders had to have a knowledge of what the enemy will do. Lets be honest, this was hardly the case all the time during the war. Having such observation units as a "warning system" could eliminiate this limitation to mission building.

With the possibility of getting some information on the enemy, patrolling planes could really cover a larger area, and then change position when they receive info on the enemy - just as it was during the war (I believe). It would also increase the element of suprise and tactic: now we "know" what is the target of the enemy, so we just have to wait there.

Again, I dont know how much work this would mean for the development team, but given the fact, that AI planes already have the intelligence of spotting enemy, I think the task of creating such units on the ground is not that big.

I agree!

I fly FB without a/c icons, a/c ID bars and speed bar. So I must identify a/c visually and I have no help from map icons.I would much appreciate to have ground control. Both Allied and Axis front-line ground controls did extensive jobs during WW II on eastern front and I miss it in FB.

Communication from ground should have proper lingo like (in case of Germans: "... M¶belwagen north of Slawyanskaya, Hanni 20, Caruso south".
(enemy bombers north of Slawyanskaya in height 2000 flying to south)

It would be cool my if kill would get final comment like "... congratulations to Nummer 2 from Elephant 3, We saw your victory".

Good idea. These are the kinds of ideas that help developers think outside the box./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

And if it isn't too much trouble, could we man ground AAA units like we do gunner positions in bombers? That would also be a great feature. Although, I guess the 3D modeling for each type of AAA could get extensive.

Hell, just give us one 3D AAA gunner position and keep changing the gun that goes with it, hehe./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Flying Tigers were always able to surprise Japanese formations with vast Chinese ground observers and lots of telephone lines going to airfield and from there by radio to P~40s.

I am really happy that so many people like the idea.

Thinking a bit more about it, I think the programing cannot be such a challenge, since AAA is already able to spot enemy planes. What we need now is a unit, that - instead of firing - would send a message trough radio (which can be a bit filtered, or distorted, just to simulate the fog of war). Of course, we cant expect messages that would include the name of a location, since i doubt anyone would be reeady to record such messages with all names available, but if the message would only indicate the ID of the given observation unit, that would be probably a nice compromise.
Or even just to have a written message - that requires even less work (i believe).

So please bump it if you would welcome some ground control in the game. Hope Oleg and the team will notice it.

Thx, Polikov

I like that, we're flying low at 500, and Field AA gunners near a checkpoint spot 3 109's flying low, but out of range of AAA. So they call into my nearby P-39's, and we rip the 109's apart before they know we're there.

Yes the speachpack is a problem I considered, but what if the verbal message would only say "eney planes sighted" (so that only one recording had to be added) - while the written info could contain the location (or just the ID of the observation unit)?

This could be easier, I think. (but again, I dont know much about the programming issues)

XyZspineZyX

Recordings of the figures 1 trough 20, and letters A trough Z would easily solve this I think.
