Mississippi Fred McDowell, Mississippi John Hurt, Furry Lewis, Big Bill Broonzy.

I just picked up a CD by The Reverend Horton Heat thats great, and a awesome CD from a band called " Grady". Grady features a singer/guitarist named Gordie Johnson who is formerly of a band called "Big Sugar". Most Canadians probably know who they were, although they are reletive unheard of here in the states.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Tool, Beethoven. I'm all over the place, but I really draw the line at Rap or Country.

*Edit... When I say I draw the line at Country, I mean what they're currently calling Country Music. Some of the old stuff is pretty cool, Chet Atkins, Johnny Cash, etc.

I'm an old fart, so probably not much in common with most of you guys, as far as my taste in music goes anyway.

For me, all-time favourite band: The Beatles.

But I hate being restricted to just one, so after them, I also very much like the following:
(Stones first, but the remainder not necessarily in order of preference)

Rolling Stones
Creedence Clearwater Revival
The Beach Boys
Deep Purple
The Bee Gees
Led Zeppelin
Boney M
The Eagles
Fleetwood Mac
Smokie
T-Rex/Bolan
Wings/McCartney
ABBA
Air Supply
Dire Straits
Hot Chocolate
Status Quo
Foreigner
U2
Van Halen
INXS
The Corrs

For solo performers, I like:

Elvis
Roy Orbison
Tom Jones
Cat Stevens
Billy Joel
Elton John
Madonna
John Mellencamp

I forgot to mention the Beatles. I have always loved the Who, Zep, the Stones, but as a kid I was indifferent about the Beatles, until recently when I purchased Revolver. That led me to purchase a
few more Beatles records, and now I hold them in much higher regard than I ever did when I was a kid.

I think George Harrison is the hugely undervalued Beatle. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I tend to agree with this (though I didn't mention Johnny Cash before, I think he was pretty darn good too. There's probably quite a few more I like, if I stop to think about it.) And like you, I also have fairly varied taste, but draw the line at Rap.

I thought they were long gone before I got chance to see them. Saw the Sisters in '84, before ***** 'ked it up, and the March Violets, but missed Play Dead.

Well, they reformed in 83', but in 98 there was the ressurection tour (from which Gotham 2cd/2lp/dvd came) and now they made another tour, which ended here in Portugal last friday. Amazing concert, now they sound completely different because they musically improved a lot in all of these years, I really recommend you Gotham to see how they sound now. There was even the bonus of joy division's Transmission cover!

The Sisters of Mercy will be here in the 5th April, got tickets already! Fortunately I'm being spoiled with all of these shows as I'm a big post punk/classic goth fan, last year I had the opportunity to see New Order live too, they did a lot of JD covers.

Bah! Legends never die http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I almost bought a bolt thrower album from just looking at the cover and listening to the first song, then I did the mistake of listening to the second one too .. and realized a picture (cover) of rabid stormtroopers and one good tune wern't enought for my (by then free earned) money. They had potential but didn't make it all the way for me.

Former keyboard player with the C. C. Riders here (Hammond B-3). Good to see so much interest in music. Someone said the Yardbirds. I had job in 1966 playing at an amusement park and backing up the groups that came in. This was during the "British Invasion." Did shows with the Who and Yardbirds, among others.

Someone also mentions Pearl Jam. The hit they had on the song "Last Kiss" was written by Wayne Cochran of the C. C. Riders. Got a check for $50,000.00 of the royalties when I was with him. Asked him how long it took him to write the song at breakfast one morning. He said he wrote the first two verses in 1958 and couldn't finish it. Put it up and finished it in 1964 after a tragic vehicle crash in Georgia. The song has been a hit three times.

Funny thing about the Yardbirds, Jeff Beck was playing lead guitar and Jimmy Page was playing base. Beck pissed in our guitar players case because he wouldn't let him use his guitar. LOL

Jimmy Page came into the Newport Hotel in Miami in 1974 when I was with the C. C. Riders and set in. He was producing a group called "Bad Company." So I got to play with him twice.

Also I got to play with Steven Stills at Criteria Studio in Miami, this is where the origninal Derik and the Dominos album was cut (Layla). Studio A and B -- hot sudio in mid-seventies. There were gold albums (no cd's then) on the wall by Aretha Franklin and the Stones among others.

Also worked with the Shirelles (John Lennon's favorite band), and the Drifters. Otis Redding and James Brown all set in with the C. C. Riders. Jaco Pastorius was the base player followed by the great New Orleans bassist David Lee Watson. Both are passed away now. Jaco was murdered, sad story.

I have a tape never before heard by the public of Jaco. I made it one night in Miami. He's taking 10 minute bass solo on a fretless bass. God bless Jaco and Dave Watson.

Our old trumpet player, Lee Thornburg is the trumpet player in the Tonight Show Band right now, and has played on over 150 CD's. He was recording with Ringo Starr the night John Lennon was shot and killed.

I met a woman and quit travelling to come home and have kids. Glad I did. The road is a ruff place to have any kind of relationship. I have two beautiful daughters.

Didn't mean to get into my musical life story, but. I'm just glad to see that all these people still like some of the old time stuff like Led Zep and the Yardbirds, even though at heart I'm a "soul man."

Thanks for the recollections, Mescoff, and I like the old stuff too...the second LP I ever bought with my own money was Led Zep 2 way back when it was new (the first was "Abbey Road"). I grew up listening to the soul and R&B classics by Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, and Co. on a hand-held transitor radio pulling in AM stations from Philly and NYC...great stuff even right now.
