Well If you Like more authentic feel to playing this game YES!!!
Here is the red me from Rub1.44 so you can see its definetly worth it. Also could recommend th IC (Improved convoys) mod with Sonar_DC 1.4mod. With those I´d use SHIII commander2 to make this all into a whole another experience(and easy to mod some thing throug commander Like U-boat number gun loading time crew fatigue etc.
Here are the RuB 1.44 specs.

eal U-Boat 1.44 (realism mod for single player SH3):

This mod fixes a number of inconsistencies in Silent Hunter III. The changes more accurately reflect the available historical data concerning U-Boat activities in WW2. The eventual goal of the patch is to accurately recreate all aspects of the U-Boat war between 1939 and 1945. Please note that this mod is in no way supported or endorsed by Ubisoft. It is an unofficial patch intended purely to enhance everyone's enjoyment of the game.

This mod is to be used with Silent Hunter III version 1.4b. It may not work properly if you don't have the correct game version installed. It is also compatible with the similarly numbered "SH3 Commander" mod.

2nd Flotilla careers: the standard game's starting base for 2nd Flotilla is wrong, and it has been changed in RUb. This means that if you start a career in 2nd Flotilla using the regular game, and then switch to RUb after doing any number of patrols with the standard game, you will get that number of notifications about a base change as you start every patrol. This can't be avoided, it's not a 'bug' in RUb that can be fixed. It can probably be adjusted in the career files after the fact, but this adjustment is so complex that it's never been attempted. In short, it's easiest if players simply end 2nd Flotilla careers before switching from the standard game to RUb.

Saved Games: there are never any guarantees that saved careers will work after installing a new mod or a new official patch. You have a better chance of getting them to work if you save them in base than if you save them in mid-patrol, but they still may exhibit weirdness or cause the game to crash to the desktop. It's best to finish up any old careers before installing a new mod.

Multiplayer: when playing multiplayer games, each player involved in the session must be using the exact same campaign files (Campaign_LND.mis, Campaign_RND.mis and Campaign_SCR.mis). This means that all players using this mod in an online game must play with people who are using the same mod.

1x Play: For players who play patrols all in 1x speed, a different Basic.cfg file is required. This file is called Basic1x.cfg and you'll find it in the SilentHunterIII\data\Cfg folder after the mod has been installed. Simply delete the Basic.cfg file and rename the Basic1x.cfg file to Basic.cfg and you'll be all set for a 1x career.

Recommended Settings

For the most realistic simulation experience, it's recommended that players leave "No Map Contact Update" UNCHECKED. In this version of the mod the map contacts are shown on the in a subdued way so that players only get a general idea of the contact - as much as the hydrophone operator would be able to give the commander.

Installation instructions:

Please, always install the Real U-boat mod over a clean copy of Silent Hunter III with the necessary official patch.

If you're using the JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler:
Simply unzip the RealUboat mod into the SilentHunterIII\MODS folder. Then, run JSGME.exe and you should see the mod listed as an available mod. Simply select it, then press the enable button and the mod will automatically install. If you ever want to uninstall the mod, simply run JSGME.exe again and disable the mod. This will return the game to its previous state.

If you're not using the JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler, first unzip the mod to the desktop. Then, open the folder that's been created. Inside you'll see a data folder and a readme file. Copy these to the SilentHunterIII folder (make sure you have the correct version of SH3 installed first). When you copy the files, Windows will ask you if you want to overwrite files: click on yes for all files.

Patch Notes:

Fatigue: the new fatigue is based on a combat stress model. It is no longer fatigue. The feature is meant to reward careful crew assignments while removing the burden of micromanagement that the original game placed on the player. In this mod the torpedo compartments and the repair area are the most stress-inducing areas of the boat, so try to keep crewmen out of these areas until they are required to work there. Also, try to limit placing watch crews on duty during bad weather. It's best to submerge when the weather is bad. Always make sure not to spend too much time at under 32x time compression.

Combat stress and crew management: When crewmen become fully stressed they will work at lower capacity. In the first couple of missions (until you train specialists) this can make it difficult to run the boat. In the short-term, place NCOs and officers in compartments which are having trouble. Between patrols, give the necessary specialist badges to NCOs and officers so that they can work the worst-affected compartments more efficiently.

Sleeping areas and fatigue: Fatigue (now combat stress) will no longer heal during time spent in the sleeping areas, but these areas will prevent crewmen from becoming more stressed. Fill these compartments with all non-essential personnel in order to keep them rested for duty.

Fatigue Marker: the fatigue marker's shape and colour has been changed. This is to remind players that high fatigue is not a 'red alert' situation. Crewmen can and will do their job even when highly stressed, but their efficiency will drop considerably. A stressed torpedo crew often takes 24 minutes to load a tube, while a fresh crew takes only 12 minutes.

The Type XXI: only 11th Flotilla got the Type XXI operational before the war's end. This mod makes only very small concessions to playability in this regard - if you want to command a Type XXI, you will have to transfer to one between the beginning of July and mid-August 1944. You will then spend a frustrating few months as your new boat undergoes delay after delay. You will finally get your new boat between March and May 1945 - if you're lucky you will have enough time left to do a patrol in it before the war ends.

Minefields and submarine nets: players will find friendly ports are guarded with sub nets and mines. There is a destroyer escort available to take you safely through the port approaches. Alternatively you can use the maps found in the SilentHunterIII folder to navigate the approaches without using the escort.

Realism: this is the watch-word of this mod. The realistic features of this mod are not for everyone, so if you're finding the mod frustrating, simply uninstall it. This mod is intended to be used with FULL realism settings (except for camera views).

Realistic career length option: no U-boat commander ever had a career spanning the entire war. In reality, commanders all retired after a few patrols - usually somewhere between 3 and 16 patrols. Often they went to training units, or they took a staff position in BdU. If players don't mind some complex die-roll requirements, and if they are willing to voluntarily retire their commanders, they can simulate a realistic career by using the following method, which gives results that closely match the historical data for the career lengths of the aces:

On completing the 4th patrol and on completion of every patrol therafter, roll a die:
After patrols 4-7, a roll of 1 results in retirement from front line duty.
After patrols 8-13, a roll of 1 or 2 results in retirement from front line duty.
After patrols 14-15, a roll of 1, 2 or 3 results in retirement from front line duty.
After patrol 16, only on a roll of 6 can a career be continued.

I need this, is this available separately (don't see it at RUB site), or, what are the cfg edit instructions to make the fix?

I am not sure if it is seperately but as that seems to be in Rub1.43/1.44 so download eitherone and acuitvate them(I´d say go with 1.44) or if you don´t wanna add the whole mod find the file and copy it to your game folder where it overwrites the bugged one? That´s just my 2cents dont know if it works that way or not. Ofcourse make sure you backup the original.
