View Full Version : Off Topic Threads - Best way to deal with them.

I read the comments about the couple of OT threads getting a run at the moment.

May I suggest that the best way to handle them is not to post in them. That only bumps them.

If the problem persists and the author keeps bumping them, open a new thread, marked attention to one of the moderators appealing for the threads closure.

Anyone got any other good suggestions or complaints? Post them here, not there!

Things like that freak me out to a point when I`m capable to open somebody`s cranium.

"one hundred years to crucify, one thousand years to satisfy".

This is why this $hit will never end! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

OT threads by themselves are not much of an issue.

Most of them here are posted by long time posters with at least a glancing relavance to the topic.

Many OT threads have been downright worth it and we would be less of a forum community without them.

Now the "Are you saved" threads are something else. They have no relavance, and are not started by long time forum members.

Further it seems the "are you saved" threads are posted by a hit-and-run. I don't see anything but the first message in the thread by that poster and he doesn't seem to respond at all to the forum members. That makes them SPAM.

I hate spam.

The other poster is correct we need to get him banned.

I love the "spam" viewpoint. Use the "report this post" button as copy/paste this sentence into the field!

Good idea, I forgot all about the report post button.

May I also suggest that if anyone does a "report this post", jump back here quickly and type "reported" or such. Don't forget to report the first post in the thread, it is the one we are not happy with.

Show some solidarity guys! Feel free to bump this thread too, as long as we have to. We've got access to a great forum, lets keep it that way. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I don't really see off topic threads as being much of a problem. As lecek said, OT thread can help draw us together as a community. However, the dude trying to save all of us before we're sunk is a bit out of line. I'm a Christian, but this is a place to talk about SHIII and u-boats, not religion.

I am not against off topic threads either and I do not advocate a rash of reports for petty issues of disagreement. That would turn us all aginst each other.

I think most all of us are mature and united in our common love of playing SH3 and then discussing all sorts of stuff that arises out of that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

I was responding to the obvious and intruding nature of the threads and disappointment in the posts that followed.

I have no axe to grind with Christianity or any one's personal beliefs despite my personal opinion of them. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Lets keep our public evangelism limited to SH3 -ish topics and our private evangelism to just that- privately done.

However if a bunch of people were wanting a discussion on the moral, ethical and religious implications of war I would be most interested. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

As Lecek pointed out the threads were more like spam than an OT.

They are crudely done with no sophistication or personal interest in the possible recipients of the thread. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

I totally agree m8! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

On a side note, this same evangelist fellow has spamed all the IL-2 forums today too. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

J Weaver, I'm with you on your comments. Instead of bringing about anything at all positive with that guy's post, all he did was attract ridicule and scorn.

I agree that we do have a number of off-topic discussions, but these help keep this forum interesting. It really would be a bland and boring forum if we discussed ONLY SH3 and nothing else. I could probably count on one hand the number of off-topic discussions previous to this particular one that so incensed our members as to need a ban or lock. Like it's been said, we're mostly adults and mature younger people, here to discuss a great game, meet some new people and have a good time all round. This is definitely the friendliest forum of several to which I belong. There is barely any bickering or personal insults and I consider that an achievement, especially when we consider that newcomers are joining all the time. Many of the old hands remain, which demonstrates what a good thing we have going here.

Good advice from Baldrick's Mate and Lecek. When we see spam, report it and don't give it artificial life by contributing to it.
