View Full Version : Anyone using the CAT 4.11's?

I like the CAT 4.10's better than the 4.1's with my 9700, though some on here have said the opposite, as it affected their fps in Doom-Life II, or HalfReal Tournament, or some other child's game that I could not possibly care any less about.

But, I'm generally not the guinea pig type, so I was just curious to hear from any that have tried them and what they experienced.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

I have a 9700 pro, average 36 fps in BD, and am using the 4.11s. IQ is good, perhaps even better than the 4.7 CATS I switched from.

Interesting. I appreciate it. Guess I'll go ahead and fire 'em up.

I installed 4.11 last night, and got this error message at reboot: http://www.hjelmevoll.net/images/Max%20renders/error.jpg
so I rolled back to 4.10 and still got the same message. Any ideas??? how can I get rid of the error msg? and what does it really mean?

Cat 4.10s are not the same as cat 4.1.Cat 4.1 came out in Janurary of 2004 and cat 4.10 came out in October of 2004.

The cat 4.11 just came out and I did not get and fps increase(stayed the same) but the color of the water looks a lot better.

And if you have win xp ATI has also released a beta version of the cat 4.12s.

I have an ATI 9500 pro.

Nils.It looks like you have a problem with the Microsoft.net framework.(ms version of Java)

You might try reloading it.

You need .net framework installed to run the Catalyst Control Centre. This is a free download from Microsoft (it does mention this in the ATI installer but it's pretty much in the small print).

You don't need .net framework installed to install the ATI Driver and ATI Control Panel which are available as seperate downloads from the ATI site.

You should be able to uninstall the package (if it's an all in one) and selectively reapply the driver and control panel only if you want to avoid installing .net framework.

It works just the same!

I have a 9800 pro...A few days ago I upgraded from the 4.10 to the 4.11. I didn't do serious testing, but I was pretty sure I was getting higher fps with the 4.11. Water looked nice, too, on perfect. However, after a good day's worth of play, I started getting the strange artifacts--square clouds and "snowy" islands, etc., that some have complained about with the 4.11s. There's a good thread on this in the Community Help forum, by the way. Some say it might be due to a bad install. However, I reinstalled repeatedly after careful de-installs, without improvement. Now I've switched back to the 4.10 using the same remove/install procedure, and everything's great again. If anyone has a suggestion, I'd welcome it!--but that's been my experience with the 4.11.

I tried the 4.11's and had the same bad experience. I have a 9700 non-pro. Big white squares when your heading into the sun, and screwed up interiors and exteriors of the planes. Tried several reinstalls with same bad results. Too bad because the game did seem smoother and a bit faster.

I wonder if these bad results are only with 128 cards or if 256 cards also have the same experience.

James you have a Nvidia graphics card, the Catalysts are the drivers for ATI cards. Don't try to install them!!!

[where Cat utility/tool/download/driver]
Hunter82 has a link to them in his signature. Just look for his posts. I installed 4.11 over 4.10 on a Radeon 9600 and I did see improved frame rates though I cannot tell you how much, but PF does run smoother on my low end system with 4.11

Eldon 45 and Jetsetsam, I get the same funny square clouds and other effects on a 256MB X800Pro with 4.11 and 4.12 beta.

Please can you fill in the Catalyst Feedback Form at the link in Hunter82's sig in the following thread?

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=49310655&m=8071039042

(if you skim through to the end you will see quite a few people have the same problem).

It should only take a minute and if the issue is flagged to the Catalyst driver team they should be able to sort it out for a forthcoming release.

Thanks,

RocketDog.

Nils,
I was getting same message. What I did (there is probably a better way) is to DL the .net 1.1 Redistributable package, and then the .net 1.1 service pack 1. I then removed my previous version of .net, intalled teh 1.1 redistributable pack (reboot) and then install the 1.1 service pack 1.

I didnt even bother loading the 4.11's because there were no performance increases noted in the release notes for the driver or any fixes noted for any of the games that i play...

Honestly guys, ditch the catalyst control center. Its cumbersome, slow and takes up way too much memory. Try radlinker instead. Much smaller, neater, and makes it alot easier to assign a custom profile to different games.

I've seen across the board performance boosts with the 4.12b's. They manage texture memory alot better I've noticed. Before, in CoD:UO I could not run extra textures at all without massive stutter as the card swapped thru is texture memory, but now its very very playable. Saw a boost in fps over the cat 4.7 ogl.dll which I had placed in the IL2 directory.

Tried 4.12 betas and got a slight decrease in OpenGl performance compared to 4.11. IQ and everything else looks good but I think I will stay with the 4.11s. Forget about the new Catalyst Control Center and stay with the old standard Control Center, it uses less resources in the taskbar to boot. I still prefer the Oglxx.dll from Cat 4.7 in my IL2 folder with Water=0. Seems to work the best.

JetSetSam -

in doing some experimentation last night, I found that the 'big white square' effects went away if I set the Texture Filtering in IL2Setup to Trilinear instead of Bilinear. Don't know whether this was a byproduct of the driver or the fact I had Aniso enabled in my ATI setup.

And Oleg's post about the patch coming out tomorrow recommends the 4.11's. So download them I did, I did.

I just reloaded my PC from scratch, loaded newest drivers including 4.11s and setup FB+AEP+PF per the tweak sticky and it is ROCKIN here. Thanks for all the useful tips here in the forum.

@Eldon & 9800 Pro users,

What system and setup you running? I have 9800 Pro 128, and I get 15-35 fps running BD and 25-50 in game according to FRAPS. Seems playable to me, but I've never measured fps until yesterday. What is considered the minimum acceptable? Perhaps I've been playing the game slow all these years lol!

I have:

Athlon XP 3.2Ghz
Gigabyte GA-N-700Pro2
1Gb 400Mhz DDR
Win XP SP2
DirectX 9.0c
Norton SystemWorks 2005, so registry regularly 'cleaned' and disk defragged.
CAT 4.11 (with Control Panel, not CCC - latter doesn't seem to offer amount of control as CP [no pun intended!])

Water=2
Effects=1
Forest=2

1280x1096 75Mhz @ "Excellent" settings (not customised)
Otherwise settings as per Hunter's sticky in "Community Help" forum.

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=49310655&m=4501076732

Am I being too ambitious for my system?

If so, what to change?

Drop AA or AF (currently set 1 notch from "Balanced" towards "Quality" under OpenGL in Control Panel)?
Drop water to Water=1 and effects to 0?
Lower resolution (hate this tho')?

It's a minefield, this optimisation stuff, esp. if you don't know what you're doing!

Cheers,

R

Hey Russkly, The only thing I would do, that I can see, is drop Water=2 to water=1 I think Oleg said that water=2 is a test and not optimized to give good frames. You might wanna bring this same question up in the tech forums, and post your dxdiag and your [openGL] part of your config.ini file. They will be able to tell you what to do.

9800 Pro/128 MB

Loaded 4.11s last week. Running the game at 1600 x 1200/32 with no problems and pretty good framerates.

On occasion, when exiting the game, the desktop looks corrupted with horizonatal lines, however, if you open a window and drag it across the desktop causing a repaint, everything is normal.
