Is there anywhere to go to find silhouette images of various aircraft in FB? Remember all the old WWII movies? Every air base had a chart on the wall showing various planes silhouettes from different angles.
The reason is..I can differeniate a sopwith camel from a stealth bomber, then after that I have trouble.

It's especially difficult when all you can see is a grey dot until they get so close you don't have time to inspect them closely. Have you tried Janes website? I imagine they have lots of modern aircraft silhouette stuff, but no idea where to find what you're looking for.

Use Quick Mission Builder for in game recognition practice.

Use google to see what you can find on the internet.

fluke39: Could you please PM me too? I think there's a lot of people out there who would like to see those pages, if nothing else then just to see how many they can get right. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Your best bet is to just go play games online where icons are off. The game is the game and real life is real life... there are differences based on the fact you are using a computer.

In general, the German planes dots are bigger than Russian planes dots.

At mid range, the german planes appear "blocky"

Padlock-on will help because you can use padlock then hit gunsight (aka zoom) view.

When you get closer and can look at the wings from a top or bottom view, the russian planes have pointed wings, the germans are more rectangular.

Also you can look at the tracers if the plane is firing. If you see blue its German and if you see green it's Russian.

Of course country markings are an indicator. Usually...Oleg still hasn't made it so the host can restrict markings in online dogfights. So there are slackers who don't have a clue. And some jokers don't use markings and just "assume" (rudely) that you have the skin download on and will see their "painted" markings.

Finally, turn the skin download off! You will get used to the stock skins and can clearly tell by the color as well. (and have about 30% less lag)

true - there are many differences - ie the me 109 no matter what mark it is will always look like a me109e from a distance - the rounded wingtips etc will only become visible at a certain distance.

However i can always recognise a plane from a distance - regardless of markings or camo scheme -this i put down to knowing the shapes of the different planes - however as it is a game (and things such as the above occur) one must keep in mind the difference

what i think you need to do is learn the RL ones then adjust them slightly to fit with the game

if you say so - i have no reason to disbelieve this

i do this also

- When you get closer and can look at the wings from a
- top or bottom view, the russian planes have pointed
- wings, the germans are more rectangular.

this applies in real life also?

yes i kinda thought that until i was playing today in a i-16 - where do the red tracers fit in ?

i sometimes play with no markings if the dogfight is random planes (ie nethier sides choice is restricted to luft or VVS) - as i kinda consider it better camo and half the time people just put their RL nationalities markings on - of course i would never do it if icons were off.

- Finally, turn the skin download off! You will get

ur probably right

hmmm a few days ago i would have probably disbelieved half your post here - but since i had a brief foray into the secret world of RBJ yesterday i truly believe you know what you're talking about (apart from when you deliberately post humbugs - which i'm sure you do quite often)

anyway - in conclusion all this is helpful stuff - but are you telling me RBJ that you don't know all the main details of the main combat types of WW2 planes? - i do -and i think its reasonably important (at least to know what each one looks like in general) for anyone who plays any kind of Combat flight sim in order to gain a slight advantage - and you know all about that - right?

The list below describes the features that should be examined so as to determine the

type of aircraft:

a. Shape and size of the WINGS (Tapered/ Straight? Delta? swept back leading edge? Anhedral or Dihedral?)

b. Position and number of ENGINES (Pod mounted? under wing? in fuselage? how many?)

c. Shape and size of the TAIL PLANE and RUDDER (conventional? mid set? t-tail? butterfly? twin boom?)

d. Shape and size of the FUSELAGE (cigar shape? boat hull? box?)

e. Type and style of UNDERCARRIAGE (fixed, retractable, tricycle or tail dragger)

f. SPECIAL FEATURES (MAD boom? rearward facing radar? faceting? Pavetack?)

I find that practicing without icons is best. Also if you practice either axis vs allied or vice versa you will become familiar with the planes in different stages. I fly mostly allied however since I discovered the joys of the 190 I fly it more often.

If they shoot at you.....Shoot back, if they don't.... get a little closer to positively identify the aircraft.

The easiest way to get kills, as I see it, is to help out your squadmates when they have an enemy on their six, often these enemies are very targetfixated and are usually easy kills, by doing this you both get a kill and save a mate. Oh, the point was, look for the colour of the tracers../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Red and red/orange tracers are too hard to tell apart, and both sides can be using them.

I know all the details of the game. I have listed them all and of course by playing the game you will learn the best (and not be reading books or watching the history channel).
