Thought I'd uncork a little whine.

How come no sim includes Lancasters. Granted, there have been add-ons for the CFS series, but no in-game Lancs. What's the deal?

The airplane looks gorgeous, sounds incredible (4 Merlins!) and even with one wing shot off could out-payload a B-17 on it's best day. Grand Slams, Tall Boys, Dam Busters, this plane is begging to be simmed. Other less worthy, and far more obscure bombers get modded in several variations, but the Lancasters are forgotten.

It's a conspiracy I tells ya.

go to Aces High
www.hitechcreations.com (http://www.hitechcreations.com)
where you can fly a Lancaster (or a formation of 3 bombers if you like) against 350 human players.

The B-24 was a helluva workhorse and broke the back of the Nazi wolfpacks when it flew anti-submarine patrols. Excellent aircraft.

But I submit that the Lancaster was a more unique aircraft, more flexible and able to fly special operations missions. More historic you could say. And to hear those four Merlins all at once. Ack! Even hearing it on film gives me goosebumps. And, I would also say the Lancaster was more beautiful than the B-24. (IMHO)

Dunkelgrun,

Yep, gotta love the whole idea of that sim. Had a few forum discussions with King Edward (as I call him), the main man over there. Nice guy. Can't wait to fly that one.

Surely not a question of who or what did more? That way lies madness.......

More guns, is like multiplying your ROF... Bigger ROF, beter chance of hitting a fast moving target.. And when you stop and consdier that most of what they did was escort bombers.. Kind of makes sense. But.. there are limts.. 2000 BB guns mounted on your wings would defintally get a hit, but like the .303 might not make it through the skin to hit anything! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

ha good point ..........weight is the no 1 reason..... for that ..303 to .50 cal dif is small iv seen lots of lancasters with 4 .303. i see the logic =more lead in the air but even there fighteres didn use .303 late in war

I remember a TV interview with a German fighter pilot talking about the Spitfires with .303s. He said being shot at by them was "like flying into water coming out of a sprinkling can. It was a shower of bullets."

Apparently, he was impressed.

In a completely different reality, I never shot so well in a sim as with .303s in deflection shooting. Just had the touch with those things. And nothing better than shooting down Bf-110s with .303s!

The Mk X had the dorsal FN50 replaced by a Martin with twin .50s.

In 18 months, 430 were built.

It also used Packard-Merlins (good supply source near by), but could be and was fitted with RR Merlins after any repair.

The Mk X went to #6 Group RAF (RCAF 419, 420, 425, 428, 431, and 434).

B17 was smaller, and took less bombs, but it also had its underneath covered, unlike the lank.

Lancaster isnt pretty...ew...B17 looks better.

XyZspineZyX

Have to agree, the B-17 was a gorgeous plane. Classic lines and curves like a 40's beauty queen.

But she didn't have Merlins, couldn't water-skip bombs and never pounded the Hun with 20,000lb bombs. And she wasn't RAF.

Biased? Yes - and proud of it.

Great to here it may make it into FB eventually. Thats one plane that I can pick out of a multitude of noises. They fly it over my house every so often (and at the local memorial day ceremonies and stuff). Its a really beautiful plane and its engines and everything are just amazing.

There is Aces High, as already noted, plus the Fighter
Ace series, Fighter Squadron (SDOE), and Janes Attack
Squadron.

With regard to the continued use of .303s over .50s,
this comes down to three factors, apparently:-
1. Relative lack of availability of .50s
2. Needing to redesign turrets to accept .50s
3. A study of 845 downed planes and other gunnery aspects
which led the RAF to conclude that at the short ranges
involved in night combats 4 .303s put out a greater
weight of rounds per unit area at 100 yards than 2 .50s
would. I haven't done the calculations or checked with
Tony Williams' site to see if this is the case.

With regard to ventral protection, the Hampden, Stirling,
Halifax AND the Lancaster were all designed with ventral
gun emplacements. However they were deleted to save
weight and drag in almost all cases, the increase in
performance seen as more useful. (In the case of the
Stirling often the dorsal turret was deleted, and the nose
turret in the Halifax). Some Australian crews took it
on themselves to mount a 20mm cannon firing through a
ventral hole, though.

My Grandpa was a Navigator in a Lanc.

The Lancaster is one of my favourite aircraft ever. She has a certain elegance to her and was a major part of the allied assault on Nazi Germany.

I admit I am biased because of my Grandpa, but I'm not ashamed of it.

Bierut. Just a thought, if you really feel so strong about the Lancaster's inclusion into FB. Continue the way you have started, by that I mean create support for the A/C. Post interesting photo's, copy information about it's designer, it's missions, but most importantly post updates/screenshots about the models progress!

You know what they say...The squeaky wheel gets the oil!

That's what the WW's have done with our Whirly...

Contact whoever is modeling the Lanc and ask if he would mind you forming a support group? If he does not get any feed back, he might begin to think it not worth the effort and shelve the whole project?

We need people like you, just think of the support given to Gibbage for his brilliant efforts. There are too few British aircraft in the game at present? Don't you think it's time to rectify that?

Best Regards

Sec.

The French flew the Halifax from the local airbase.
They still have one at the air museum, so getting
photos of the cockpit etc would be easier than the
PBY has proven to be so far.

Some of the equipment we used in physics lessons
at school (amp and voltage meters, etc) in the
1980s was apparently ripped out of Lancasters
at the end of WW2! (Some of the equipment was so
old I think we had Wheastone's ORIGINAL bridge! :-))

Bremspropeller,

Fantastic! Thanks for that. Throw in some Mosquitos and Spitfires and this will be the sim I used to daydream about while working in the woods.

Great to see the interest in the Lancaster and Halifax bombers. The American bombers, as gorgeous and historic as they are, do tend to overshadow the RAF to a degree. It's not that we should ignore them, but that we should include the RAF too. The more planes the better.

No kidding though, IL2 becoming the uber-sim we all dreamed about. We'll have Mosquito Pathfinders marking targets for Lancaters during nightbombing missions. Searchlights and burning cities, nightfighters and flak. Then come daybreak, waves of B-17s and P-38s pounding the Hun all over again.

And I for one would be happy to pay for add-ons like that. Il2 isn't just a flight sim - it's a hobby.

Love the Lanc....always have ever since my first Commando/Battle comic which was "K for Killer". (Cursed Lanc, killed everyone who flew on her..bla bla bla).

She is not a classic beauty no, but something about her stirs emotion.(And I'm not a Brit, nor have I ever seen a Lanc in RL)
