not meaning to be a nit picker but this question was spawned by hardballs FB viewer:

I Always thought that the Q-1 armament was 1 37mm cannon and 4 .50 cals - mainly as the two wing mounted guns are in pods whereas the N-1's brownings are neatly in the wing. -this has led me to always fly this version when flying the P39

in the object viewer's armament section in FB it states the armament of the P39Q-1 is 2 .50's in the nose (as always) and 2 .303 brownings in the wing.(this is also what hardballs viewer says as i guess it has copied this text)

HOWEVER in the text lower down in FB's Object viewer it says "this version differs from previous ones as it has....1 37mm cannon 2 12.7mm mg's and 2 x 12.7mm (.50 cals) in the wing..."

so which is it?

4 .50 cals
or
2 .50 cals and 2 .303 brownings?

anyone?

Hm...looks like .50cal gun, sounds like .50cal gun...so it must be .50cal gun /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

This comes up every few weeks, it seems.

A lot of the object viewer data is incorrect - seems silly to me, really. There's a good case to be made for taking user submissions on this data and/or making them editable .xml files or similar. There have been hundreds of interesting histories and combat accounts and service records posted on these forums about all of the FB planes. It's a shame that so much of the OV text is wrong or just duplicated from other aircrafts entries. I remember reading that Maddoxs' reasoning for lack of error checking and consistency in the OV is that it was too much of a pain to localise for all languages before release. Boo-hoo, so let us fix it, I say :>

Anyhow. To answer your question, yes, they do seem to be .50s in the game from their firing rate and damage. Apparently these were stripped from most aircraft on arrival in soviet squads the same as the N1's .303s were, though, so I guess the Q1 is just there to let you fly them as they came from the factory.

Did you know you can turn the P-39s wing guns off with the activate gunpods key assignment? Helps conserve ammo on the longer missions.
