Mine was coming up to the conning tower after the crew said "Schiff gesichtet" (ship sighted) near Scapa Flow. When I looked around, about 3 feet away from the starboard side of the boat, running parallel to us, was the hull of a huge freighter. It had appeared out of a thick fog. I nearly had a heart attack. Fortunately it was exactly on an opposite course to my boat, and it just slid by without touching us. I don't think I'll ever have a closer shave.

What's your most frightening moment?

When I was hiding under a tanker I had torpedoed, hiding from a DD.

I thought I had enough distance to it, so it would hit me when it sank.

I was wrong!!
I checked through the periscope and saw the bow of the tanker coming strait at my stern. BANG!!!
End of that show http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

attacking a big convoy west of brit coasts.
I wanted to try a spread attack with my 4 tubes. 7? of spread angle, aiming at the ship in the middle of this big convoy.

Periscope depth, made a fast 360? tour to watch for DDs, no DDs seemed to having spotted me.

Torpedos los !

3 dud ones, one hit on a C2 cargo. Very disappointed I didnt notice a DD coming at me at full speed. (A real uboot commander would have launched his torps, lowered the scope and got deeper to silently disappearing. I didnt !

Crash dive !!!!!!!

Depth charged (heavy damages, heavy flooding).

Like in Das Boot, my sub was lost, getting deeper and deeper, 120m..130m...145m...blow ballast...50% compressed air used...full reverse...150m...152m....150m!!!...147m...Everybod y inside was trying to fix the flooding (half of the bow compartment was flooded) and another attack of the DD, I was so noisy with the full reverse and the repairings that it could hear me 10 km away. The second attack was fatal and a depth charge explosed near me at 70m deep (anyway I was lost as I was going up to surface in the middle of 3 british DDs not quite happy of my attack http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )

First death. The only one for the moment. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Naval Academy, watching a DD behind me after the first run on the convoy, turned around and OH SH**, C2 or so right in front of me, crash dive and I had to RETRACT THE PERISCOPE FAST to prevent a collision.

Hehe, or.

I think I'm in deep water, dive to 21m.. ping bottom, depth under keel 3 m.

I used a heavy storm and thick fog at night to sneak into Scapa Flow. Sight was perhaps 300m max. About 30km out of Scapa my Sonarman gets a contact, that closes in. I go to silent running and wait for it to pass, but put the Periscope up. What do I see? A Destroyer going flank speed at me about 200m away. After changing my pants I narrowly managed to evade him with minor damage by his depth charges and silently slipped away.
20km later I am awoken by "Wir wurden entdeckt, Herr Kaleun!"
'Yeah, right...!' I think and put the scope up, only to see how I am being pounced on by two Clemsons. Ever tried to evade a tandem destroyer-force? Forget it, just torp the suckers! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Which I did to then proceed to drive into Scapa Flow, surfaced. Only to find that nobody is home. Guess I'll have to come back later in the war. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Forced to the surface and running for my life, on watchtower concentrating on dodging fire, turned around and saw Destroyer about to ram, turned hard to port and the Destroyer and my sub were side to side crashing together for 30 seconds or so until I turned away! Funny thing is that as I turned, my gun crew got a lucky shot in and caused some damage!

Those Destroyers are quite big when you get up close!

A couple of times now I have dodged a depth charge run, it's gone really quiet for a fw minutes, and then BOOOOOOM the sub-woofer kicks in and I nearly fall off my chair!

Fantastic atmosphere http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I was attacking a convoy when another ship in it rammed me. I saw the boat just before it hit and gave the order to crash dive, but it was too late. He slammed into me head first almost perpindicular to my path. I survived the collision only to find a new horror, my boat was in an inverted crash dive! During my shock at this my boat somehow managed to right itself and I regained control at about 150m. I took heavy damage but survived. The ship that rammed me capsized and sank within 2 minutes of crashing into me (viewed through external). I returned to base without causalties. Also didn't get any kills, every single torp I had was a dud that time out http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif.

I was ordered through the English Channel on my first patrol in my new VII-B, 4th patrol overall. 100% realism. After evading a few torp boats I went to periscope depth and took a look around. Sonarman picks up a destroyer coming in fast at close range. I swivel the scope around just in time to watch it ram its bow into my conning tower.

That wasn't the scary part, however. The scary part was when the destroyer exploded, my only damage was to my AA guns, and all I could think of was "oh cr@p, I forgot to turn off invulnerability!"

I get the certain feeling, I'm getting a bit TOO CLOSE to the convoys? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I was surfaced and concentrating on a fishing boat, but the weather was too rough to shoot it. Well, the little SOB radioed my position and the next thing I know a bomber starts dropping depth charges on top of me. Scared the **** out of me with the surround sound cranked! Needless to say I crash dived and got out of there..........

I have 2, one i am going to put in a write up when i get time (i keep saying that...) and the other was a near collision like your beery.

No fog but trying to set up for a shot on a Norwegian frieghter, i took so long and messed about in the end he turned to ram me.

HARD RIGHT RUDDER FLANK SPEED!! All i could do was watch open mouthed.

Just avoided him... After the indignation of being almost rammed in bright sunlight i opened the rear torp ready to make him pay!

And ...

I got a radio report that there was a large convoy in the area. I decided I would goto where I thought they would be, and camped out. Hours later, I get a sound contact, the ships are right where I thought they would be. Visibility is only 500 meters though, I best get close. Raise parascope!....hmmmm....rotate to 270degrees....AAAHHH!!! smash! Scared the cr ap out of me, there was nothing I could do. A destroyer going about 15 knots creamed my con tower, and sunk me.

what do you mean, a little less guilty, dominicrigg?

Hmm. I'm looking at the second screenshot in that group. While you're watching open-mouthed, what are the watch crew looking at? Did a naked Nicole Kidman just surface off the port beam?

rofl i never noticed that, something interesting!! Maybe a mermaid... no wonder i nearly got rammed in broad daylight... there i am in the tower messing with protractors and charts and they are checking out totty... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

On the guilty thing, i feel guilty sinking allies, its hard for me as a brit/italian lol. Its also compounded by the fact these guys are not really fighting. Not to get into a whole ethics debate but total war is not very nice. (And yes im aware its a game!)

Its like the bismarck short mission, when im lining up the king george my brain is going

"wow dom, look at that ship, its kicking ***!!! Do you really want to fire? Do you? Just wait a few seconds it will be too late, then you can sail away... just dive dom and use the external camera to watch the fun, you know it makes sense!!" lol though maybe im a bit mad... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Waited on the surface (like a fool) in heavy fog for a lone merchant.

Rammed my a$$ and during my first successful patrol.

Learned two lessons that patrol. Save after each successful sinking and never attack on the surface in fog.

Mine was last patrol last night. I was looking for a Convoy in fog. The Sonar was all over the place. Noticed a Tanker 350 Yards away, barly could see it. Started to get in position for a shot. Little did I know that anohter C2 Cargo was coming behind me. I crashed dive It came right over me.
After a few minutes decided to go to Periscope depth again, when I started coming up another ship was just passing over me and It just barly hit my conning tower.. All I heard was this grinding sound. That was scary. Dived again. Conning tower was slightly damaged. And the ship did survive. Sounds like we just scrapped a little bit. LOL.

Tracking a contact in heavy fog with hydrophone. Plotted what I thought was an intercept course. After over shooting the target used SO to locate target again. Made the mistake of being on the surface when I turned into the contact. A few minutes later WO shouts "ship spotted." Jump on deck to look around, C2 bearing down on me at about 200 m. Felt like I was on the Titanic. Hard rudder to port, but too late. The C2 raked my entire ship stem to stern. Flooding in 5 compartments. Hull integrity down to 15%. Did manage to limp home in one piece.

It's all about the fog... Chasing down a Cargo, I was in close and trying to torp her from the surface in super thick fog (Type-IIA, no deck gun). We were weaving back and forth, and I kept losing her in the fog. I went hard to starboard to come at her again, but instead of a Cargo, I see a Destroyer barreling at me! A crash dive and some silent running later I escaped with minimal damage. Oh, and I got three shots off that all missed. Talk about edge of your seat.....

Patrolling in dense fog off of Scapa Flow, and all of a sudden at 400 yards, a Heavy Cruiser... All ahead Flank, hard to port Crash Dive!!!!

He missed ramming me by about 2 yards, silent running and deploy decoys, I followed him with my Hydrophone and snapshot all 4 tubes based on acoutic tracking (2 acoustic torpedoes and 2 nonguided torpedoes) 4 hits and I sunk a cruiser.

Patrolling CA61 at night in the fog and rain I didn't have any contacts and all of a sudden I was being shelled. I dove as fast as possible but sustained heavy damage and ended up in an uncontrolled dive... imploded and died. Good thing for save points. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

"Happy Times" on (almost) full realism. (I like to play with external camera, event camera, and sound meter) Big cluster-**** convoy, had a few close calls.
