View Full Version : the role of Ubisoft in offering low ping game servers?

Hey all. I play the game JointOperations too, and I was wondering why Ubisoft doesn't support IL2/Pacific Fighters like Novalogic does JointOperations.

You can go into a Novalogic Joint Operations served map with 100 players and get a ping of 23ms!! Then, you can try and play IL2/Pacific Fighters online at Ubi.com and there are no public servers, and the ping rates kill an otherwise great game? Why doesn't Ubisoft offer public servers, with low pings, and thus perpetuate the number of people playing IL2/Pacific Fighters?

I know that most people play online at HyperLobby. But, I'm running a stand-alone install of PFs, and HyperLobby doesn't have a listing yet for this.

Anyway, not to come across sounding mad or upset, I just wish there was more support (ie, low ping server support) for our sim.

one word- Money

It costs money and recources to police those servers. As long as Jiri supplies the community with a free alternative that actually works Ubisoft will sit back and let it happen. There is Ubi.com, but very few actually use it for whatever reason.

There used to be two official UBI servers running in the Il2 room. For whatever reason, they never upgraded those to FB or AEP when those came out and now they are gone altogther. For what it's worth, the pings to those were never any better than some of the high-end public servers available.

well #1 ping is relevant to location... on the old ubi servers I had a 18 ms ping. Their old servers were OK but maps were generic style that came with the game. These were not rotated in time and were not policed.... Gotta have involvment to run them http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I'm just at a loss why Ubisoft doesn't want to invest in that part of their business. I've tried playing 3 games on Ubi.com the past couple days. All 3 had pings over 100ms. (and I'm on broadband) And then when the action starts, and you've got 8 players or more, I was seeing screen updates about once every 3 seconds. Twice I lost a dogfight because of this. Once, I ran into the ground. (or controlled flight into terrain, like they used to call it in Janes Longbow http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif ) When this happens, people leave. In Novalogic's JointOperations, people stay because of the low pings, and like I said before, there's a 100 people in there or more and the ping is still low. Imagine a 100 player dogfight with a ping of 23ms!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif I'm starting to wonder if there's more overhead to run this than JOs, because why can Novalogic accomplish this, and Ubisoft not? If Ubisoft had low ping PFs servers, I would stay. Ubi probably stopped bothering because the community were doing a much better job of hosting their own servers.

BTW, ping is not nearly as critical in a flight sim as it is in a first person shooter. I'm reluctant to even enter a FPS server with higher than 150ms ping, but I'm perfectly content with anything sub-450ms for IL2/FB/PF.

The experience you describe sounds more like either your own PC is not up to scratch or the person running the server has chosen a mission containing more objects than the server or its connection is capable of keeping up with. I've been on many servers both in DF mode & coop mode with smooth action for up to 25-30 players, and just as many with very poor results for anything over 4 players. You'll quickly get to know the good ones.

I can't speak for Ubi as I don't spend much time there, but at Hyperlobby or on ASE look for Greatergreen & Warclouds. There's also a post here in the first couple of pages by Osirix who runs a server that is well regarded, though I can't play on it (I'm in Australia and the ping limit keeps me out). It's called Warbirds "Birds of Prey".

Thanks for the tips Tully__. I'll look for those servers. These are running the stand-alone PFs right?

Funny thing, I purchased PFs not even knowing that the AEP was a formal addition to IL2:FB. I purchased the original IL2 when it came out, then FBs when it came out, then I also picked up the Barbarossa campaign. http://www.rcsimulations.com/barbarossa.htm I thought AEP was just extra missions. (like the Barbarossa campaign) Otherwise, I'd be running ILFB + AEP + PFs altogether.

I hadn't heard and haven't experienced the ability to connect without problems at such a high ping rate. (sub 450ms) That's great you're having few problems.

My PCs not the latest greatest thing, but I'm running PFs at perfect settings, 1024x768, and still seeing framerates in between 30 and 40 fps. So, my machine probably isn't the problem.

I've got Verizon DSL, and I've never had a problem with it connecting to Novalogic servers with ping-rates as low as 6ms.
