I think Chelsea had a bit of a surprise because they get used to nobody giving them a game in the Premiership, most teams are just happy to lose 1 or 2 nil to them and then turn round and say - "What can you do with their spending power?"

But Mourinho has a nerve calling Barcelona divers and actors after the disgraceful excuse for a team he put out against Man Utd a couple of seasons ago, I still can't believe it was'nt just a Circus tumbling act wearing Porto shirts...

Low_Flyer, have you any idea why Mr. Ferguson abandoned the fast, flowing, creative, flair football that won them trophies - for a depressing, patient, walk-the-ball-up-the-pitch, back-off and back-off when the opposition has the ball mentality?

I think he's either an imposter or he's gone senile... and dont even talk to me about Darren Fletcher!

Sir Alex should have gone out on a high - but then we're into that old chestnut 'who's going to replace him?' And he should have nipped that Keane business in the bud...I still think there's hope for the future though. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

IMHO A lot of fan power went when the club was sold. DaimonSyrius could tell us how Barca's membership scheme works perhaps? Seems to me the fans have a big say. The club is obliged to play entertaining football.

Just finished Nobby Styles' book - 'After The Ball' recommended. Jumpers for goalposts an' all that.

Not that I am actually a hardcore football fan... just that today I happened to watch the match and I enjoyed it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Having said that, Barça (short for Barcelona in catalan) is still a club, not a PLC. Members are members, they pay a fee, and they elect the president every 4 (?) years. There are over 100.000 members currently, have been for a long time (there is some kind of regulation, or maybe it's just common sense, whereby a club can only have as many members as it could actually accomodate in the stadium). However, fans are many more, and Barça is sort of a national team for Catalonia. Just sort of, as we cannot have a proper, fully-fledged Catalan national team under current Spanish law. But that adds a lot of undertones, both sportive and political, to what the team does.

Nevertheless, all the above hasn't prevented Barça having too many bad seasons as well, and some dead awful ones too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif So I guess, the current golden days are mostly due to having put together a good team and managing it well... Many people like to think this is like Johann Cruyff's old times revisited (Cruyff has been living here since, and apparently he's close to current management and president).

Hope this explained it? I'm sure it didn't http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

S.

Pfffft Chelsea is a collective that can win any match without up to 4 of their best players whereas Barcelona suffers deeply from losing any of them.Especially when Ronaldinho had to take a break hheheh then Barca was playing like Athletico.I like Messi very much. This guy represents what I always liked in football. He has almost everything a star has and VERY creative.

I think that now if Barca doesn`t make mistakes it`s already won for them. They better take the R man from the pitch in league matches or they can risk him being ingured and then bye bye CL.

Chealsea has players that are no stars yet they have similar very high skills and they are the world`s best team when it comes to working toghether.

Abramovich is a very clever guy.He picks guys that are cheap yet can do anything.Robben for example. No one seen him until Abramovich bought him.Or Cole,Geremi,Makelele and so on.He needs Rosicky and Juninho too. Those guys are the best yet no one wants to pay $ for them.

Chelsea greatly completes all what is football about.EVERY player has to be great,EVERY one works for others,EVERY one is responsible.

Mourinho? The guy is a great tactician and knows psychology well enough to make his men feel they can win with just about any team there is.

Mourinho's a great coach/manager and Chelsea are a great side, and so they should be. Personally, I don't feel that Abramovich's money is great for football and is a bit odd to say that he picks players up on the cheap!! Quite the opposite really. That's why people feel that he is just buying the Premiership and why so many people want them to fail in the Champions League.

Daimon, had some wonderful times in '99 in Barcelona, went there for the 3-3 group match when we sat with the Barca fans courtesy of a Catalan we nick-named 'Frank'. Great match, great fans.

And again in that glorious May against Bayern, and we were so warmly welcomed by the people of Barca, despite our, ahem, rowdiness. I loved it so much I had to go back there on holiday with my GF a couple of years later (you wouldn't believe the number of Reds that did that), perhaps my favourite city in the world.

As for Chelsea, pfft, that traitor Kenyon. No-one had heard of Robben? BS, we had him ready and then Kenyon offered Sweet FA for him before nobbing off to Chelsea and paying over the odds for him. Kenyon took Fergie's wish list with him to Chelsea. ****. Likewise he FURBAR'd the Ronaldino deal, no wonder he went to Barca. Mind you that could have been down to the weather too...

Anyway, complete the job in 2 weeks, I'll be raising a glass of Voll Damm to you!

Rivaldo! Rivaldo! Rivaldo!

Abramovich is a very clever guy.He picks guys that are cheap yet can do anything.Robben for example. No one seen him until Abramovich bought him[quote]

Abramovich is a James Bond villain come to life.
(Glazer isn't any better IMHO)

Cheap? Was Wright-Phillips really worth what Abramovich paid?

Cheap? Why have Chelsea recently posted record losses? Could it be something to do with those 'cheap' transfers?

Cheap? It's actually cheaper for a west-Londoner to fly out to Munich and watch Bayern than to watch Chelsea.

No-one saw Robben? He was linked with several clubs before signing for Chelsea who simply fluttered Abramovich's billions to price everbody else out of the market.*

[quote]Mourinho? The guy is a great tactician and knows psychology well enough to make his men feel they can win with just about any team there is.

I'd like to see him get Torquay up.

hell yes , barca roxx big time . and the good thing is , that football wins and chelsea the anti footballers dont. if you watch a game of chelsea , its boring , boring and very boring. while the [dutch] influence in the barca tactics are showing us a really good-to-watch
game of 11 people playing togheter with the intention to attack and havin fun while doin that , not in need of doin fouls or other ugley stuff , but using their skill and football abillity to get things goin as thy want . ive been a big football fan and i realy hate that more and more teams are startin the italian system of tactics , that is ; buy the strongest defenders you can get your hands on [matarazzi , cordoba, terry, kalatze, walter samuel, etc ,etc] and kill any initiative of the oponent by tryin to kick em in half , and then you buy 2 really fast players who just make a run for it [robben , drogba] result; its an afwel game to watch and it end up 1-0 most of the time . barca rocks big time

Am no Chelsea fan (Palace) probably like them the least of all the London clubs.

I still wouldn't put a penny on them not going through though. Whether you like em or not there is just too much "class" to consider winning against them an almost forgone conclusion..

We will see..

Danjama, in football, if a player plays for a team in London say, he is de facto, a cockney, regardless of where he comes from. Ditto for anyone playing for Liverpool is a scouser, etc. It's a tribal football insult.

Ergo, Arsenal (to wit, Eboue) cheated, they are cheating cockneys.

Worse, Henry was ungracious at the end. Since he plays for Arsenal, that makes him a moaning cockney, NOT a moaning Frenchman.

No.

Danjama, did you watch the game?

First off the Ref should have played on, let the goal stand and then sent off Lehmann.

Then, about one minute later he should have sent Eboue off on a straight red for that vicious studs high attempt at maiming a Barca player.

Then, Eboue wouldn't have been on the pitch in order to make that outrageous dive, which the ref mistakenly gave as a free kick instead of a second yellow, which led to Cambell's goal.

Now, how do you think you were robbed? and is your throat sore from all that shouting?

Arsenal may have the cockiest players in Europe.Guys like Ebue,Traore are great defenders and fantastic actors.Although I will never forget what Ebue did with his hand in match vs Manchester Utd. this year - biggest cheat I ever saw.
When Arsenal finds themselves in a difficult situation dirty fouls start, nerves and little player riots with use of violence.

And Henry himself thinks he`s the friggin king of the football world.Well NOT.So much cockiness!

Their coach is a sore loser, unable to face his own mistakes. Why the h3ll did he think he could make it 1:0 to the end?!

Other than that I have never seen such a fantastic defence.Sheer tactical perfection - Ronaldinho facing 3 defenders everytime,Cole and Campbell indisputably covering 100% of center airballs.Great positioning.Same with midfielders - great positional attack, great return to defence.Barcelona was left there standing for 60minutes without any ideas - and all managed by a team that is 24 year old average!
Although I never understood why Henry is to get the ball, run 20 meters and shoot instead of positioning himself in the paint waiting to execute.I thought this kind of attack would fail miserably and it did.Henry had no support.

Arsenal was my number one hate team but after what I saw in CL RESPECT!

Barcelona?Pffft without Ronaldinho it`s a far worse team.Even Messi,Larsson or Iniesta can`t make up for his absence. They have Piniol - they best defensor of today and thats a fact. The guy coordinates whole defence and defensive part of midfield formation.
Barcelona also presented a great defence through whole CL but there are few better teams in this.I think though that its a very big achievement of defence - Spanian teams don`t work on defence too much, but what I saw was top class.

Eventually Larsson showed his mates how to attack and later all was a matter of formality.

I like Barca for how they play. They don`t do dirty playing. They don`t use violence and if they lose, they lose without blaming the whole world. They stood up against 1:0 score, didn`t give up and won.

Was it deserved?

Well I want to comment on what the referee was in yesterday`s game.Because Mourinho frequently said referees were heavily biased, they changed this game`s referee in the last moment.Of course, the guy is an amateur with no experience.
YOU DON`T THROW OUT A GOALIE IN FIRST 15 MINUTES OF THE GAME!
The whole show took a hit from that decision. It should be yellow card and goal scored. But the idiot threw Lehmann out.Barcelona basicly had it in the bag from that moment on.Chances would surely come and capitalising was something guys like Eto or Ronaldinho would not fail. The referee made few more big mistakes. He was the wrong person to lead the game.

It makes me mad everytime some idiot referee who makes an impact on the game whereas he should be in the background making the right decisions, not playing the leading role in the show.CL final is a celebration of European football which those blind idiots ruin almost everytime.WTF was the referre that threw Del Horno for colliding with Messi thinking I don`t know.

It should be like in Superbowl. All big decisions must be reviewed or the show will continue on suffering from what goes on in the leading idiot`s mind.

Congratulations to Barcelona - lucky again!

Good post carguy, but rules is rules - Lehmann brought the man down when he was clearly the last player between him and the goal. That's a red card. (The 63rd of Wenger's reign). As for grace in defeat, there was a nice official post on of all places Arsenal's website last night (got to admit I looked in for a bit of the ol' schadenfruede) - Henry and Wenger would have done well to react like that, would have got a lot more respect from the neutrals.

Blasphemy!!! Never happen. U.S. would have to win the thing (which would probably instigate WW III) before it would even make the evening news here. Being ignorant of this sport is a matter of National Pride I think. Kinda silly I suppose. If we ever did win it, Germany AND England would declare war on us immediately...

Aaah, cricket - the crack of leather upon willow, tea in the pavilion and all that. Was very big in the New York area in the early 1860's till the teams went off to the civil war, apparently. By the time the survivors came home, some chappie named Doubleday had tweaked rounders a bit, named it baseball and the whole shebang really took off - but for that we might be playing the USA for Washington's false teeth or something just as strange as the ashes...

Perception is a funny thing ( and again excuse my ingnorance of your sports) but I have alway thought Football sat sort of between American Football and Basketball as far as the pace of the game. It seems from the very little American football I have watch to be very stop-start with halve to team going off and back on again and Basketball the opposite with the 2 teams chasing each other up and down the court scoring constantly in each others rings(is that the right term?)

Again it is funny how all these great sports have never really caught on in the others countries, although America has a pretty decent International Football team and some good players in the Premiership.

All I can say is I`m looking forward to the World Cup and in the words of Deelia "Lets be `avin you"

Not sure that its America that the rest of the world would or should be worried about I think they should be looking over their shoulders at Africa and China. If they could get a decent Pan African league going then I think that they would be turning the tables on Europe. I think I`m right in saying that the fastest growing sport in China is Football, the potential there is incredable

A few years ago LF, whilst popping out for the paper I found myself in a Tibetan refugee camp in Nepal where upon I was confronted by a young Tibetan in a Man United top. "Was there anything I could do for him," once I made it back to England, I asked.
"Send me a Man U poster and a scarf and be snappy about it my good man." He answered.

So it appears that not all MUFC supporters have been to Old Trafford.

It's a true story although I'm not sure I completely remembered the discussion verbatim. In case you're wondering I never did send him the paraphenalia he asked for as I lost his address.

They're everywhere - I did a stint with some visiting Chernobyl children a few years ago, all they wanted was United shirts. I got the club to send down some stuff for them and managed to do a deal with a local sports shop for half a dozen shirts. The presentation got a bit formal (not my intention at all) and somewhere amongst the ensuing chaos I was asked by one of the children (via an interpreter) if I had ever played football. "Of course," I replied and proceeded to enter into my elephantine ball juggling routine...well, things got a bit garbled in translation and a few weeks later I was shown a cutting from the Minsk gazette (or whatever it was) by an amused Russian teacher who assured me that it was an article about how much the kids enjoyed their visit to England and that the highlight of their trip was when ex-Manchester United superstar Low_Flyer (not my real name btw) had given them his old shirts.... my claim to fame, I'm world famous in a little village in Belarus. Feel a bit of a fraud though...

It was a classic match. Well played all around, can't gripe *too much* with the refereeing...

It was very entertaining, although from my Gunner POV, it was frustrating. Watching Arsenal collapse into a defensive shell (with Henry screaming at the bench for support to go forward).... and knowing that both tactics were basically playing Russian Roulette with Barca...

I knew it was but a matter of time, with just 10 men, unless the referee "equalised" on some ticky-tack foul.

Congratulations to Barca, well done.

To Lehmann and the Gunners, tough luck, we'll get 'em next year...after all we did take 4th from Tottenham in the Prem!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Ploughman, L_F, great stories. That's what makes us great, without the out of town support we be not much bigger than city.

I thought that was a prerequisite NOT to have been to Old trafford or even Manchester to be a MUFC supporter. My wife (who`s from Oldham) and claims to be a MUFC supporter has been there less times than me (in fact she`s has never been) </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I met some Norwich supporters on teh tram stop on the way to the game once...it took the guy three attempts to ask me where he got his tram ticket from before I managed to ascertain which language he was using...turns out it was English http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I actually did think he was one of our overseas supporters for a time.

Next time you're back up, come in the Unicorn back o'Piccadilly, I'll have a pint of Bass waiting for you http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Its a deal, although I suspect it will be a long time before Norwich play any football in Manchester!!

I can say this watching football at Old Trafford is something you never forget Man Utd supporter or not.
