View Full Version : B-17F... Frustrated Again.

10-29-2005, 11:20 PM

After reading many good books and having a long interest in the US daylight bombing offensive. I started to skin the 303rd Bomber Group for IL-2 knowing what a kick **** sim it is. And I was sure that it would reproduce the effects of the missions well. I am fairly adept at skinning and was looking forward to the task. Unfortunately I have found just another flaw with IL-2 skinning. The Nose section in the B-17F is reversed on the model.

Big deal, live with it...

Sure, but is BOB going to be the best when they cant get the basics on the models right in this version?

VERY NICE WORK!!! How I do miss il2skins.com as the best place to find such nice additions to the game.

Cheers Spectre!

God I miss IL2skins.com too.

I used a B-17 template downloaded from there and modified it. There are no details in the template so I cannot thank them directly. I am now looking for some black and white checkered nosed FW190s.

Maybe this post should be moved over to the paint scheme forum. The post was originally to alert everyone on the B-17F nose mapping reversal. I trust that they get BOB right.

Nice work http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif, the F version is my favorite.

I also miss il2skins.com

Try skinning the P-47 or the spit Mk-IX series..

Nice job, BrassEm!

I mess around with skinning, I do some very basic stuff. I was very chagrinned to find that some areas of some planes have reversed sections. I can't figure it out, and it drove me nuts with a P-47 I was doing. Other planes have no issue like this. It's very odd. But since you figured it out, perhaps there's hope, eh? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

CanonUK did some really nice 3 JG1 FW 190s with checkboard cowlings, they are A4 models if I recall

Excellent lead Chuck, right on the money, thanks! There are several excellent checker nosed skins of JG1 over on Canon's website. Many thanks to Canon too of course!

I have read many horror stories of other skin mappings as well... Bring on BOB!

P.S.> For what it is worth it looks as if they took the B-17G model and simply removed the turret to make the B-17E, hence the windows swapping. Still very glad to have any B-17 though!
