"Philip Lucas was involved in that 'fix', and in another, stranger case, in which a Canadian wing were threatening not to fly the Typhoon after two of their aircraft had burst into flames and crashed while attacking an apparently-undefended bridge. The theory was that the fuel vents of the aircraft had become clogged through the corrosive effects of standing out near the Normandy beaches, causing fuel to flood the gun bays and producing flashbacks when the guns were fired. But when the front line moved up shortly afterwards, a visit to the crashed machines proved that they had, in fact, been shot down. This fully satisfied the Canadians, who said that while they objected to being killed by technical faults, they were quite prepared to take their chance with the Germans."
