Got a super machine with an hot video card. Gonna do a fresh install. Question is, I think I am ready for some mods but really don't know which ones are worth the effort. RUB, plotting mods, radar, and so on.

Would you guys please run down your favorite mods and why I would like them? I need some help here? Or just direct me to a place where I can get the skinny on mods?

Thanks

I recommend the world mod, flag mod and smoke mod.
World mod gives you ships in enemy and home ports,NY has a Passenger Liner most of the time and Scapa Flow a few BB,s and CV,s.
flag mod gives you swastika's on the german ships.
Smoke mod gives you more realistic smoke when you sink a ship.
You can find them here (http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches2005.html#sh3)

What about RuB? Seems to be very popular.

Also a good one but if you want to use that,I suggest IUB.
Don't use it myself but it is a good one.

I have the following installed all of which can be found at http://u-boot.realsimulation.com/

Real damage mod - adds oil leaks and varying damage effects to your sub, reduces damage to destroyers after a collision. Great mod!

Light night mod - allows you to see land at night

Lighthouse mod - adds working lighthouses

Visibility mod - expands visibility out to 12miles - you can now see ships further away and ports in the distance etc - great mod!

Seabed mod - adds better graphics to seabed

Hospital ship mod - adds hospital ships

PT Boats - adds torpedo ability to PT boats making them more lethal

SWmod - adds swastikas to flags etc generally for realism

Flagmod - adds high resolution flags

Ive also tried NYGM Damage/Aircraft mod - improves torpedo attacks by making ships gradually sink instead of just having hit points, but also greatly reduces effectiveness of cannon which so not so good

IUB - some quite nice things but reduces traffic for realism etc which makes the game quite boring IMO

Cannon 10-60 secs - reduces reloading time for cannon to realistic levels. OK with unmodded cannon fire but useless when combined with NYGM damage mod as its impossible to damage ships with the two installed. Install one or the other.

Otherwise there are a few other intersting ones like camera mod which increases range of view massively.

And the clear water mod to recreate clear water views underwater when other mods remove this (like Beerys water mod). Very useful if you like to see the depth charges.

Whatever you install you absolutely MUST get the mod installer utility which allows you to add and remove mods at will without affecting the base game. This is a godsend as you will install mods you dont like etc. Its called JSGME.exe.

You will be tempted to install a large all in mod like RUB, IUB or NYGM Tonnage mod. By all means try these but I have found that you nearly always get stuff in these that you will hate. YOu are probably better off gradualyl increasing your mods via separate small ones like those above. Anyway have fun. The mods add loads more to the game.

nstutt - good stuff. But I cannot find the real damage mod.

What's it called, and/or could you please link it?
Thanks.

I have used IUB102 for quite a few months now and like it for the added ships in friendly and enemy ports, improved smoke on sinking ships, in chart mode you can zoom out and see the convoy routes so you can put yourself right in action as long as the route is active for the current year you are in. Use the map that comes with the game for this or find the map in the documentation section of your installation. There's supply U-boats and merchant ships so you can stay at sea longer there's tons of graphic fixes and the list goes on as this is a 600mb overhaul of SH3.

Sorry - the real damage mod is on www.subsim.com (http://www.subsim.com) and is actually meant for the v1.3 patched game although I have implemented it on 1.4 and it works fine. I especially like the oil leaks when you are hit. But the depthcharge and destroyer changes are an improvement as well.

I liked a lot of IUB but couldnt live without the damage% indicator which IUB switches off for some reason. IUB is trying to make SH3 extremely realistic as is RUB and the NYGM crew managment and campaign mods but I certainly dont want to playa game that is so realsitic you can never find a ship, never blow up a ship with the cannon, hit a mine an die whithout knowing why in your home port, or never know when you are about to die through hull damage. IMO these mods take realism to the extreme and I dont find them all that enjoyable to play. But they are obviously suited to others.

Personally I prefer to pick and choose my own mods and if you use the mod enabler utility you can do just that until you reach a happy balance.

Thanks everyone, but can some one break down the differences between IUB and RuB. Don't be afraid to be biased.

RuB is included in IUB. Rub is only a few mb in size where IUB is 600mb.

I just installed the "real damage" mod and it totally rocks. The smoke, fire, and oil coming off the tanker I just split in half looked cataclysmically cool. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks guys.
