View Full Version : Radeon HD3850 + Catalys 8.1 = texture flickering

So I just upgraded to a C2D E6750, MSI RX3850 256MB and 2GB DDR2-800, running WinXP Pro+SP2 and catalyst 8.1 drivers. There's texture flickering everywhere, both ground and water. And those famous rectangles flickers... I HOPE we won't be left in the dark...

I'm not an ATI user, but I have read about driver issues starting with 7.12. I dunno, but you might have to remove your current driver and install 7.11.

That is most definitely a driver issue. Uninstall the current driver using DriverCleaner Pro, and in Safe Mode. Reboot, install Catalyst 7.11, see if it works better.

That card is going tits up, and It's time to RMA it.

I had the same thing with an AIW x800.

ATI doesn't 'suck'. You just happened to get a card that had some weak commponents. The same thing happens to every hardware vender in existance. I have an old 9500 Pro that I ran 24/7 for years, and it's still going strong in a system that a buddy of mine built for his 10 year old. The AIW died in 6 months. It's just the 'luck of the draw'.

Why the flickering happens in IL-2 only?

I've had 2 nvidia cards and never had problems with them. Now it's the third ATI card and the second that's supposedly dying. I strongly disagree with you.

Turning anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering off made this BS go away. *sigh*

Be sure to set ctalyst AI to standard, advanced seems to have issues with il2 and the newer ati cards.

I was going to say the same thing. I have the same card and had the same problem, setting it to std fixed it for me. The IL-2 engine is aging and may not be 'as' compatible with the DX10.1 cards.

I have a HD3870, There is something wrong in 3 different games that the 8800 cards work well with- Il2, SH4, and BOB2. I've seen posts on different sites posted by buyers that describe a whole slew of rendering problems in Dx9.0c games with HD series cards.

I've been an ATi fan for years. If the next driver release doesn't fix the issues, I'll be selling the HD3870 on ebay and getting an 8800. There have been numerous problems with the ATi drivers installing and working with the HD2X00 AGP series cards too. I currently would not recommend the HD series for anyone other than AGP users that want a Dx10 capable card, as there is no Nvidia equivalent.

Sorry, but it should not be an issue to get correct rendering from dx9.0c games that are a year old or less. This is just sh***ty driver programming.

And then there people who have a 3870 and have no issues and people who have 8500 to 8800 cards and are having all sorts of issues, many having to revert back to older drivers. Swings and round-a-bouts mate.

The card is not broken so please know what you are talking about before you tell someone to send it back. What you are seeing is artifacting which can come from a many things. Most likely it is an issue between driver and game as well as settings for both. Take the time because in PC gaming you need patience for such things. If you wish to be able to just play with no hassle then buy a 360.

Run the dxdiag tests and a 3D Benchmark like 3Dmark 2006. It is possible the card is defective, the tests would show problems if it is.

Since you say it's a new card - did you completely remove the old drivers before installing the new ones? Also make sure the card's fan is functioning correct. I've heard people who had problems with that.

Fresh install of windows xp

I used rivatuner to bump the fan speed to 70% when gaming.

BTW, setting the A.I. to standard http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif "fixed" it.
